Borderline personality disorder and depression severity predict suicidal outcomes: A six-month prospective cohort study of depression, bipolar depression, and borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Suicide risk is high in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD). Whether risk levels of and risk factors for suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempts (SA) are similar or different in these disorders remains unclear, as few directly comparative studies exist. The relationship of short-term changes in depression severity and SI is underinvestigated, and might differ across groups, for example, between BPD and non-BPD patients. METHODS: We followed, for 6 months, a cohort of treatment-seeking, major depressive …

The Prevalence of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea in Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder: A Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: People with severe mental illness (SMIs) are at an increased risk of morbidity and reduced life expectancy. Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), a prevalent but underdiagnosed condition in SMIs, may precipitate more physical health complications. This meta-analysis aimed to estimate the prevalence of OSA and assess its risk in SMIs populations. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on studies reporting either diagnosis or high risk of OSA in bipolar disorder (BD), schizophrenia (SCZ), and major depressive disorder (MDD). Databases were searched through January 2…

Tuning the brain: Intrinsic resting-state connectomes distinguish major depressive disorder from social anxiety disorder in salience and limbic circuits.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) are prevalent and frequently co-occurring. Few studies have directly compared MDD and SAD using spatially and frequency-resolved resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC). We examined whether rsFC networks show shared and diagnosis-associated features of MDD and SAD. METHODS: Baseline rsFC from 150 adults (MDD = 60; SAD = 55; healthy controls [HC] = 35) underwent group-information-guided ICA (GIG-ICA). Component spatial maps and frequency spectra were compared across groups with age, sex, and motion covariates. F…

Unique features of peer relationships in specific developmental periods predict borderline personality disorder and major depressive disorder in late adolescence.

It is well established that peer relationships and psychopathology reciprocally influence each other across development, but it is less clear how trajectories of specific peer functioning domains are associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). We hypothesized that trajectories reflecting greater relational aggression would show stronger associations with later BPD symptoms, consistent with developmental models linking interpersonal conflict strategies to borderline features, and that lower peer acceptance, particularly from middle childhood throug…

Structural brain correlates in major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder: a diffusion tensor imaging meta-analysis.

The high comorbidity of major depressive disorder (MDD), anxiety disorders (ANX), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) complicates the study of their structural neural correlates, particularly in white matter (WM) alterations. Using fractional anisotropy (FA), this meta-analysis aimed to identify both unique and shared WM characteristics for these disorders by comparing them with healthy controls (HC). The aggregated sample size across studies includes 3,661 individuals diagnosed with MDD, ANX, or PTSD and 3,140 HC participants. The whole-brain analysis revealed significant FA reductions …

Two-channel EEG based diagnosis of panic disorder and major depressive disorder using machine learning and non-linear dynamical methods.

The current study aimed to investigate the possibility of rapid and accurate diagnoses of Panic disorder (PD) and Major depressive disorder (MDD) using machine learning. The support vector machine method was applied to 2-channel EEG signals from the frontal lobes (Fp1 and Fp2) of 149 participants to classify PD and MDD patients from healthy individuals using non-linear measures as features. We found significantly lower correlation dimension and Lempel-Ziv complexity in PD patients and MDD patients in the left hemisphere compared to healthy subjects at rest. Most importantly, we obtained a 90% …

Evaluation of olfactory bulb volume and olfactory sulcus depth in patients with panic disorder and depressive disorder: An MRI study.

BACKGROUND: Although some studies have shown decreases in the olfactory bulb (OB) volume and olfactory function in depressive disorder, there are no studies investigating OB volume in patients with panic disorder. AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate whether there was a change in OB volume and olfactory sulcus (OS) depth in patients with panic and depressive disorder when compared with the control group, and which group was more affected by comparing the two disease groups. METHODS: Data of 51 patients with panic disorder and 56 patients with depressive disorder were obtained by sca…

Comorbid major depressive disorder in cognitive-behavior group treatment for social anxiety disorder: An examination of processes of symptom change.

Individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) typically have elevated depressive symptoms and approximately 50% also meet criteria for major depressive disorder (MDD; Beesdo et al., 2007). In the present study, we examined the relationship between social anxiety and depressive symptoms during cognitive-behavior group treatment (CBGT) for SAD. Specifically, we compared individuals with SAD and comorbid MDD and individuals with SAD without MDD to examine the role of MDD as a moderator of social anxiety-depression relationship. Participants were 90 individuals seeking treatment for SAD (36% were…

The White Matter Microintegrity Alterations of Neocortical and Limbic Association Fibers in Major Depressive Disorder and Panic Disorder: The Comparison.

The studies regarding to the comparisons between major depressive disorder (MDD) and panic disorder (PD) in the microintegrity of white matter (WM) are uncommon. Therefore, we tried to a way to classify the MDD and PD. Fifty-three patients with 1st-episode medication-naive PD, 54 healthy controls, and 53 patients with 1st-episode medication-naive MDD were enrolled in this study. The controls and patients were matched for age, gender, education, and handedness. The diffusion tensor imaging scanning was also performed. The WM microintegrity was analyzed and compared between 3 groups of participa…

Perinatal depression is associated with a higher polygenic risk for major depressive disorder than non-perinatal depression.

BACKGROUND: Distinctions between major depressive disorder (MDD) and perinatal depression (PND) reflect varying views of PND, from a unique etiological subtype of MDD to an MDD episode that happens to coincide with childbirth. This case-control study investigated genetic differences between PND and MDD outside the perinatal period (non-perinatal depression or NPD). METHODS: We conducted a genome-wide association study using PND cases (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale score ≥ 13) from the Australian Genetics of Depression Study 2018 data (n = 3804) and screened controls (n = 6134). Results…

Intravenous trazodone for the treatment of psychomotor agitation and associated symptoms in major depressive disorder patients experiencing a depressive episode with mixed features.

Psychomotor agitation is a challenging symptom of major depressive disorder with mixed features (MDD-MF), often worsening outcomes and complicating treatment. This retrospective study assessed the efficacy and tolerability of intravenous trazodone in 97 hospitalized patients with MDE-MF. Symptom severity was evaluated using montgomery asberg depression rating Scale (MADRS), young mania rating scale, hamilton anxiety rating scale, GAD-7, and clinical global impression scale-severity of illness (CGI-S) scales, with significant reductions in agitation, anxiety, and irritability observed early dur…

Non-invasive neurostimulation to improve sleep quality and depressive symptoms in patients with major depressive disorder: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive neurostimulation, including bright light therapy (BLT), repetitive transcranial magnetic (rTMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), has been shown to alleviate depressive symptoms in major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the efficacy of these interventions in addressing sleep disturbances in MDD patients remains a subject of debate. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to conduct a meta-analysis of available randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to assess the effectiveness of non-invasive neurostimulation in improving sleep disturbances and depressive symptoms in MDD…

Unlocking the healing power of psilocybin: an overview of the role of psilocybin therapy in major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and substance use disorder.

Resistance to traditional treatment methods is still a major obstacle in modern psychiatry. As a result, several studies are currently being conducted to find effective alternatives to traditional therapies. One of these alternatives is psilocybin, a psychedelic substance that has been tested in clinical trials as an adjunct to psychotherapy. These studies focus on patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and substance use disorder (SUD), particularly alcohol and nicotine dependence. This article looks at the current understanding of psilocybin, includ…

Exploring Deviation from Time Perspective in Patients with Major Depressive Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder: A Comparative Analysis in the Clinical Context.

Objective: A growing body of research stresses the effect of time perspective (TP) on the genesis and maintenance of psychological disorders. However, the variations in the TP configuration of individuals with different disorders have not yet been completely investigated. We aimed to compare the differences in TP among patients with three common psychiatric disorders. Method : We recruited 30 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), 30 with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and 30 with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Participants completed Zimbardo's Time Perspective Inventory, Be…

Depression in Opioid Use Disorder: A Tripartite Psychopathological Model for Dual Disorders.

Depressive symptoms are highly prevalent among individuals with substance use disorders, particularly opioid use disorder (OUD), yet their clinical meaning is often difficult to determine. In routine practice, these symptoms are commonly interpreted within a binary framework, either as manifestations of an independent mood disorder or as substance-induced states related to intoxication, withdrawal, or early abstinence. Although clinically useful, this distinction may not fully capture a third configuration in which depressive psychopathology emerges within the chronic addictive process itself.

Depression, Gaming Disorder, and Internet Addiction in Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often have various psychiatric comorbidities, particularly depression. In recent years, gaming disorder (GD) and Internet addiction (IA) have been identified as common comorbidities of ASD. We administered three self-administered screening instruments to adolescents with ASD to assess the severity of depression, GD, and IA. The participants were 10-18-year-olds with ASD. They were asked to complete three questionnaires to assess depressive symptoms, GD, and IA: the Patient Health Questionnaire for Adolescents (PHQ-A), Ten-Item Internet Gaming Dis

The risks for major psychiatric disorders in the siblings of probands with major depressive disorder.

Using a case-controlled study including siblings of major depression (MD) and control probands, born 1970-1990 and followed through 2018, we sought to clarify the degree to which the familial liability to MD is reflected in its clinical features, and the pattern of psychiatric disorders at elevated risk in the siblings of MD probands. The study population included full-siblings of 197,309 MD and matched 197,309 control probands. The proband-sibling tetrachoric correlation of for MD was +0.20. Both linear and quadratic effects of younger AAO and number of episodes significantly increased the ri
