The hypotheses of a visual basis to reading disabilities in some children have centered around deficits in the visual processes displaying more transient responses to stimuli although hyperactivity in the visual processes displaying sustained responses to stimuli has also been proposed as a mechanism. In addition, there is clear evidence that colored lenses and/or colored overlays and/or colored backgrounds can influence performance in reading and/or may assist in providing comfortable vision for reading and, as a consequence, the ability to maintain reading for longer. As a consequence, it is

Brain structures implicated in developmental dyslexia (reading disability - RD) vary greatly across structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies due to methodological differences regarding the definition of RD and the exact measurements of a specific brain structure. The current study attempts to resolve some of those methodological concerns by examining brain volume as it relates to components of proposed RD subtypes. We performed individual regression analyses on total cerebral volume, neocortical volume, subcortical volume, 9 neo-cortical structures and 2 sub-cortical structures. The

In normal vision gamma oscillations are involved in object perception, are modulated by attention, and have been linked to awareness by way of their putative role in perceptual integration, arguably as a mechanism for synchronizing activity in separate neural assemblies. We tested the hypothesis that the presence of gamma oscillations (approximately 30-80 Hz) signal the entry of a neural representation into awareness (as indexed by direct report), while attempting to control for other measures of neural information processing such as discrimination accuracy and reaction time. To what extent seasonal factors modify the neuronal functional properties within the nuclei of the avian song system remains an open question. In adult songbirds, neurons of the song premotor nucleus HVC (used as a proper name) exhibit selective responses for the bird's own song (BOS). Here we examine whether, outside the breeding season, when songs are less stereotyped, HVC neurons of male canaries still respond selectively to the BOS produced during this period. In an initial experiment, single-unit recordings (n = 114) revealed that the neuronal selectivity for the current BOS was attenuate

Threatening, friendly, and neutral faces were presented to test the hypothesis of the facilitated perceptual processing of threatening faces. Dense sensor event-related brain potentials were measured while subjects viewed facial stimuli. Subjects had no explicit task for emotional categorization of the faces. Assessing early perceptual stimulus processing, threatening faces elicited an early posterior negativity compared with nonthreatening neutral or friendly expressions. Moreover, at later stages of stimulus processing, facial threat also elicited augmented late positive potentials relative

Two conflicting hypotheses compete to explain how a homing pigeon can return to its loft over great distances. One proposes the use of atmospheric odours and the other the Earth's magnetic field in the 'map' step of the 'map and compass' hypothesis of pigeon homing. Although magnetic effects on pigeon orientation provide indirect evidence for a magnetic 'map', numerous conditioning experiments have failed to demonstrate reproducible responses to magnetic fields by pigeons. This has led to suggestions that homing pigeons and other birds have no useful sensitivity to the Earth's magnetic field.

This article provides a selective review on the perspectives of the clinical research and application of the mismatch negativity (MMN), a component of the auditory event-related potential generated by the brain's automatic response to any discriminable change in auditory stimulation. The MMN (and its magnetic equivalent MMNm) currently provide the only objective measure of auditory discrimination and sensory memory. It can be registered in the absence of attention and with no task requirements, which makes it particularly suitable for studying different clinical populations and infants.

BACKGROUND: Patients with autism show clinical features suggestive of abnormal processing of auditory and other sensory information. We hypothesized that low-functioning autistic subjects present abnormalities in discriminating simple auditory stimuli at sensory system preconscious stages of cortical processing.
METHODS: To verify our hypothesis, we used magnetoencephalographic measurements of mismatch field (MMF), which reflects the detection of a change in the physical characteristics of a repetitive sound. Fourteen patients (aged 8-32 years) who met DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for autistic

BACKGROUND: Prosopagnosia, the inability to recognize faces, is associated with medial occipitotemporal lesions, especially on the right. Functional imaging has revealed a focal region in the right fusiform gyrus activated specifically during face perception.
OBJECTIVE: The study attempted to determine whether lesions of this region were associated with defects in face perception in patients with prosopagnosia.
METHODS: Five patients with acquired prosopagnosia were tested. They were asked to discriminate faces in which the spatial configuration of features had been altered. This was contras

Kimura Recurring Figures were presented after the priming trial to the upper or lower, left or right, tachistoscopic fields while monopolar electroencephalographic activity was measured over the left and right parietal, occipital, and temporal lobes for 9 men and 9 women. The relative proportions of alpha rhythms during the 2 sec after each of 64 presentations were employed as the primary measure. The powerful asymmetry in electroencephalographic activity, manifested as a paucity of alpha activity over the right temporal lobe compared to the left temporal lobe, was not observed for the parieta

AIMS: The purpose of our protocol is to study neurosensory disturbances following genioplasty, sagittal split mandibular osteotomy, or both procedures in combination. Many authors assessed the incidence and degree of neurosensory disturbances of the inferior alveolar nerve following orthognathic surgery but often results are difficult to interpret and compare due to a lack of standardization of methods.
PATIENTS: Fifty patients (24 males and 26 females) were tested with qualitative (touch sensation, sharp/blunt test, cold sensation and hot sensation) and quantitative methods (localization tes

Cannabis derivatives and alcohol are widely co-abused, particularly among adolescents. Since both ethanol and cannabinoids are known to impair learning and memory, the present study investigated in rats the effects of combined exposure to ethanol and delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in a memory task, the object recognition test. The results of the present study provide evidence that ethanol, voluntarily ingested in alcohol-preferring rats, and THC, given by intraperitoneal injection, have a synergic action to impair object recognition, when a 15-min interval was adopted between the sample p

The present study examined the proposition that inflated responsibility is implicated in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Compared to non-anxious control participants (NACs), and an anxious control group with generalized social phobia (GSPs), we predicted that individuals with OCD (OCs) would exhibit a greater urge to rectify situations involving potential risk, would report more distress upon leaving such situations unrectified, and would feel more personal responsibility if the unrectified situations resulted in harm. Fifteen OCs, 15 NACs, and 15 GSPs completed the Obsessive Compulsive R

To determine if an increase in intake at a meal before a long fast can be conditioned to food texture cues, male Sprague-Dawley rats were given a high- or low-fat diet in one texture (powder or pellet) for 1 h prior to a 12.5-h fast and in the other texture before a 3-h fast. Each group (N = 9) went through a pseudorandom sequence of four duplicates of each texture-fast pairing over 4 experimental days in each of three training trials, followed by one 4-day trial under extinction, i.e. without the difference in fast lengths between textures. Neither the high-fat group nor the low-fat group as

A multi-modal abnormality in the integration of parts and whole has been proposed to account for a bias toward local stimuli in individuals with autism (Frith, 1989; Mottron & Belleville, 1993). In the current experiment, we examined the utility of hierarchical models in characterising musical information processing in autistic individuals. Participants were 13 high-functioning individuals with autism and 13 individuals of normal intelligence matched on chronological age, nonverbal IQ, and laterality, and without musical experience. The task consisted of same-different judgements of pairs of m

"Divided attention" is a psychological construct that hinges on assumptions about a fixed finite capacity of subjects to simultaneously process multiple sets of information. A model of a crossmodal divided attention task was developed in rats. Initially, rats were trained consecutively in operant auditory and visual conditional discrimination tasks. The final task consisted of two successive blocks of 20 trials per modality (modality certainty), followed by 60 trials comprising a semi-randomized sequence of stimuli of both modalities (auditory or visual) and qualities (flashing/pulsing or cons

It was proposed that differences between paranoid and nonparanoid schizophrenics in the processing of affective information may reflect underlying differences in their schema for emotion-laden information. Performances of 14 paranoid schizophrenics, 13 nonparanoid schizophrenics, and 15 matched controls were compared on a facial affect judgment task, and a matched control task comprising geometric figures largely devoid of emotional information. Subjects were required to rate friendliness, select an emotion label, and subsequently to remember the stimuli. Nonparanoids were deficient in overall

The ability to acquire visual cues for discriminating between two targets against a background of visually similar items was examined in 64 patients with unilateral temporal- or frontal-lobe excisions and 20 normal control subjects. The subjects were tested on two versions (letters and abstract designs) of a visual cue-learning task that was an adaptation and extension of RABBITT's (Am. J. Psychol. 80, 1-13, 1967) visual-search paradigm. For both versions, the material consisted of two packs of cards, each containing a different set of background letters or designs. Subjects were required to s

Cocaine inhibits the reuptake of dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE), and serotonin (5-HT). To investigate the relative role of such reuptake processes in the discriminative stimulus properties of cocaine, male rats (N = 16) were trained to discriminate cocaine (10 mg/kg) from saline in a two-lever, water-reinforced drug discrimination task and were administered neuroactive compounds during substitution or combination tests. The DA reuptake inhibitor GBR 12909 (2-16 mg/kg) completely mimicked cocaine. The reuptake inhibitors for NE (desipramine; 2-8 mg/kg) and 5-HT (fluoxetine; 0.625-5 mg/kg) d
