Effect of Victimization on Impulse Control and Binge Drinking among Serious Juvenile Offenders from Adolescence to Young Adulthood.

A vast literature has found longitudinal effects of early life stress on substance use and self-regulatory processes. These associations may vary by period-specific development among youth involved in the juvenile justice system. The current study used an accelerated longitudinal design and auto-regressive latent trajectory with structure residuals (ALT-SR) model to examine the within-person cross-lagged associations between binge drinking, impulse control, and victimization from 15 to 25 years of age. A large sample (N = 1100) of justice-involved youth were followed longitudinally for 7 years

Severity of gambling is associated with severity of depressive symptoms in pathological gamblers.

The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between gambling severity and depressive symptoms in pathological gamblers addicted to slot machines, with the hypothesis that comorbid depressive symptoms are associated with exacerbated gambling symptoms and behavior. Twenty controls and 20 pathological gamblers with different levels of depressive symptoms were studied during slot machine gambling. We found exacerbated gambling behavior in gamblers with high compared to low levels of depressive symptoms in terms of self-reported gambling urge (P < 0.01) and excitement from gambl

Reliability, validity, and cut scores of the south oaks gambling screen (SOGS) for Chinese.

We examined the reliability, validity, and classification accuracy of the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) when adopted for use in Chinese. The DSM-IV criteria for pathological gambling served as the standard against which the classification accuracy of the SOGS was tested. A total of 283 Chinese adults in the community and 94 Chinese treatment-seeking gamblers were recruited. The internal reliability of the SOGS was satisfactory for the general sample and acceptable for the gambling sample. The SOGS was correlated with the DSM-IV criteria items as well as psychosocial and gambling-related pr

Alcohol protracted withdrawal syndrome: the role of anhedonia.

AIMS: The aim of the present study is to characterize the relevance of withdrawal symptoms during the first 12 months of abstinence and their relation to anhedonia and craving. METHODS: 102 detoxified subjects meeting clinical criteria for Alcohol Dependence in Remission were recruited at various time since the detoxification and subdivided into four groups according to the length of abstinence (group 1: 15-30 days; group 2: 30-90 days; group 3: 90-180 days; group 4: 180-360). Withdrawal symptomatology was assessed through the Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment for Alcohol (CIWA-Ar). Th

Psychological experience of gambling and subtypes of pathological gamblers.

Clinical experience and some empirical data suggest that different subtypes of gamblers may exist. This study examined psychometric properties of the Gambling Experience Measure (GEM) to establish support for differing subtypes of gamblers. In total, 149 treatment-seeking pathological gamblers completed the GEM and other instruments. A principal component analysis produced a three-factor solution that included gambling as a way to escape negative emotions (Escape), dissociating (Dissociation), and narcissism/seeking attention (Egotism). Multiple regression analyses revealed that being female a

Attenuation of cue-induced cigarette craving and anterior cingulate cortex activation in bupropion-treated smokers: a preliminary study.

In untreated smokers, exposure to cigarette-related cues increases both the intensity of cigarette craving and relative glucose metabolism of the perigenual/ventral anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). Given that treatment with bupropion HCl reduces overall cigarette craving levels in nicotine dependent subjects, we performed a preliminary study of smokers to determine if bupropion HCl treatment attenuates cue-induced cigarette craving and associated brain metabolic activation. Thirty-seven, otherwise healthy smokers (20 untreated and 17 who had received open-label treatment with bupropion HCl) un

[Joy riding: multiple criminal car rides in an intoxicated state in relation to dyssocial personality with addictive tendencies].

Going out from the case report of a young unskilled worker, the author introduces a little known behavioral disorder, named "joy riding". This highly problematic pattern of misbehavior includes the stealing of usually high-powered motorcars in order to take fast and joyful trips without any goal and leaving them anywhere in a more or less damaged state. As our case report shows, this special behavior sometimes develops features of an addiction and thereby similarities to addictive behaviors like pathological gambling, kleptomania, pyromania and others. Rightly, we find in literature several st

Child firesetters: a study of three populations.

Child firesetting constitutes a serious and widespread problem, yet little definitive evidence exists distinguishing child firesetters from their nonfiresetting peers. The authors studied the characteristics of 186 firesetters and 165 age- and sex-matched controls at two state psychiatric hospitals for children, six community mental health centers, and a children's medical hospital. Their findings failed to corroborate results of other studies that have suggested correlations between firesetting and enuresis, sexual conflicts, low intelligence, large family size, economic deprivation, adoption

[Psychiatric disorders after early brain damage in children and adolescents - four case reports].

Neuropsychological assessment is an important diagnostic tool that can provide additional information for diagnosing mental disorders during childhood and adolescence. While in the past, the challenge of a neuropsychological assessment was to detect whether or not the child had suffered brain damage, this aim changed with the development of better, non-invasive brain-imaging techniques. On the basis of four single cases it is demonstrated that brain damage causes not only direct, but also indirect deficits. In particular, the indirect consequences of early brain lesions, such as behavioral dis

Occurrence and clinical characteristics of Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD): A cluster analysis in two independent community samples.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD) is characterized by a persistent failure to control intense and recurrent sexual impulses, urges, and/or thoughts, resulting in repetitive sexual behavior that causes a marked impairment in important areas of functioning. Despite its recent inclusion in the forthcoming ICD-11, concerns regarding its assessment, diagnosis, prevalence or clinical characteristics remain. The purpose of this study was to identify participants displaying CSBD through a novel data-driven approach in two independent samples and outline their sociodemogra

Long-term cognitive follow-up of Parkinson's disease patients with impulse control disorders.

This study investigated cognitive functions in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with impulse control disorders (ICDs) and aimed to identify possible predictors of behavioral outcome. In this longitudinal cohort study, 40 PD outpatients with ICDs and 40 without, were matched for sex, age at PD onset, age and disease duration at cognitive assessment. All patients had two neuropsychological assessments at least 2 years apart (mean, 3.5 years). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify predictors of ICDs remission at follow-up. The PD patients with and without ICDs had o

Impact of Neuropsychiatric Symptoms on the Quality of Life of Subjects with Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Neuropsychiatric symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD) are frequent. Impact of neuropsychiatric symptoms on quality of life has recently become a relevant topic of research due to its potential to develop targeted therapies to improve quality of life. OBJECTIVE: To determine the impact of neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with PD using the Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire Short Form (PDQ-8). METHODS: Consecutive patients with PD were evaluated with the Scale for Evaluation of Neuropsychiatric Disorders in Parkinson's disease (SEND-PD) and PDQ-8 scales separately. Association

Impulse control disorder and rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between ICD and RBD is still not yet understood and the results from the current literature are contradictory in PD. We aimed to explore the association between rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) and impulse control disorder in Parkinson's disease. METHODS: Ninety-eight non-demented patients with Parkinson's disease underwent one night of video-polysomnography recording. The diagnosis of RBD was established according to clinical and polysomnographic criteria. Impulse control disorders were determined by a gold standard, semi-structured diagno

Personality factors and styles among college students who binge eat and drink.

Elevated rates of comorbidity between binge eating and alcohol use problems have been widely documented. Prior studies have examined specific personality traits associated with the co-occurrence of these problems. The current study explores comprehensive personality factors that are associated with the co-occurrence of binge eating and binge drinking among a diverse sample of 208 college undergraduates. Using the Five Factor Model of personality, the authors assessed both comprehensive personality factors and style of impulse control, a personality style defined by different combinations of ne

[Compulsive shopping--current considerations on classification and therapy].

Compulsive shopping is classified by ICD-10 (F63.8) as an "impulse control disorder, not otherwise classified". Several authors consider compulsive shopping rather as a variety of dependence disorder. It is characterized by the impulsive or compulsive buying of unneeded things, personal distress, impaired social and vocational functioning, and/or financial problems. In this case, we discuss a two-way therapy consisting of addiction-specific psychological education and high dose selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). We further point to compliance problems caused by SSRI side effects.

Characteristics of gambling helpline callers with self-reported gambling and alcohol use problems.

The characteristics of problem gamblers calling the Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling (CCPG) gambling helpline during the years 2000-2001 (n = 960) were examined based on the presence or absence of self-reported alcohol use problems. A relatively low proportion of callers reported a problem with alcohol use (173/960 or 18.0%), and of those acknowledging an alcohol use problem, the majority reported a past rather than current problem (143/173 or 82.7%). A logistic regression analysis found that, as compared with problem gamblers denying any alcohol use problems, those reporting past or cu

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of bipolar disorder versus intermittent explosive disorder in children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of bipolar disorder in juveniles is controversial. This study was designed to compare proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H MRS) in patients with bipolar disorder or intermittent explosive disorder, two groups with symptomatic overlap but categorical distinction. Children with intermittent explosive disorder designate patients whose illness clinically resembles pediatric bipolar disorder but does not satisfy DSM-IV criteria for mania. Based on the authors' previous report of higher levels of (1)H MRS cingulate myo-inositol/creatine in youngsters with bipolar dis

Pathological gambling.

With increasing access to gambling facilities through casinos, the Internet, and other venues, PG is a rapidly emerging mental health concern. This impulse-control disorder tends to be comorbid with a wide range of other disorders and is reportedly associated with a high rate of suicide. For most gamblers, gambling is a form of entertainment, but for many individuals, the activity leads to far-reaching disruption of family and work. The personal and societal financial ramifications are severe, and many individuals with PG end up in the criminal justice system. An understanding of the neurobiol
