OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to review the pathogenesis and the result of management of the intracranial complications of chronic middle ear suppuration.
METHODS: This was a retrospective review of charts of 32 cases with intracranial complications due to chronic middle ear infection managed between 1993 and 2007. The symptoms, clinical findings, and medical and surgical management were reviewed and analyzed.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is a congenital segmentation anomaly of the cervical vertebrae that manifests as short neck, low hair line, and limited neck mobility. Various systemic malformations may also accompany the syndrome including wide variety of otopathologies affecting all 3 compartments of the ear (external, middle, and inner ear) as well as internal acoustic canal and vestibular aqueduct. Tinnitus is a common otological symptom. Usually it is subjective (perceived only by the patient); very rarely is it objective (heard by both the patient and the examiner) Objective tinnitus due to middle-ear myoclonus is extremely rare, with only a few case reports published in the literature. We present three cases of objective tinnitus caused by middle-ear myoclonus. All patients were cured by tympanotomy with stapedial and tensor tympani tendon section.

Eleven patients who had been surgically treated from 1988 to 1999 were retrospectively reviewed in order to evaluate the efficacy of ventilation tube insertion and mastoidectomy with, or without, mastoid obliteration for intractable middle-ear cholesterol granuloma. The mean age registered was 17.2 years at the time of surgical treatment. All cases were unilaterally affected. Adamantiades-Behçet's disease is a chronic recurrent inflammatory disorder involving the small and large vessels. Typical loci of manifestations are the mucous membranes, skin and eyes, as well as the joints and central nervous system. Other organs are not commonly involved. Forestier's disease is a skeletal pathology that sometimes affects the head and neck as a consequence of hyperostotic involvement of the cervical spine. We report the case of a 73-year-old man who had progressive difficulty in swallowing solids. Gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a bony mass in the hypopharynx. The case is described and the disease manifestations in head and neck are discussed.

We reviewed the records of 136 patients who had inner ear disorders including hearing loss and vertigo caused by pressure change. We divided them into three groups, according to the aetiology: group A, change in atmospheric pressure (diving, airplane travel, etc.); group B, rapid change in ear pressure in normal atmosphere (nose blowing, heavy lifting, etc.); and group C, blast injury. Eight cases of glomus tumor (chemodectoma) are reported. All the patients were women aged 46-55 years with complaints of noise in the ears, diminished hearing, pains on the side of the tumor.
