This narrative review applies neo-materialist theory to examine disparities in diabetes care across four domains: clinical trials, diabetes technology, immunotherapies and adjuvant digital technologies. Although systemic marginalisation can occur in many forms (e.g. based on ability, language, sex, gender or age), this review focuses on marginalisation based on race, ethnicity and socioeconomic status, as these are the key areas supported by the current evidence base. Under-representation of minoritised groups in clinical trials of diabetes interventions may limit the generalisability of the d

Background/Objectives: Patient portals and patient-facing information technologies are now routine channels for healthcare delivery, but healthcare organizations need practical ways to monitor whether these channels are equitably accessible and used. This study examined U.S. national trends in digital health equity from 2017 to 2020 using three Healthy People/HINTS indicators representing an access-offer-use pathway: broadband access, being offered online access to medical records, and using information technology to track or communicate about care. Methods: We conducted a repeated cross-secti

The Field of Competence (FOC) of specialists in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) in Europe follows uniform basic principles described in the White Book of PRM in Europe. An agreed basis of the field of competence is the European Board curriculum for the PRM-specialist certification. However, due to national traditions, different health systems and other factors, PRM practice varies between regions and countries in Europe. Even within a country the professional practice of the individual doctor may vary because of the specific setting he or she is working in. For that reason this pape

The demands on Graduate Medical Education (GME) leadership continue to grow as health systems become more complex, integrated, and resource constrained. Shifts in the physician workforce, rapid technological advances, and evolving care models require leaders who can navigate uncertainty and guide training programs in increasingly dynamic clinical environments. In this context, GME leadership must move beyond managing daily operations and focus on designing resilient, equitable learning systems aligned with the broader mission of academic health systems. GME will continue to depend on strong, t

The use of nanomaterials, specifically fluorescent semiconductor quantum dots (QDs), for biological imaging and sensing has become very topical. Here we present a historical synopsis of research in this field to help elucidate the origins of the most recent advances in QD-based technology. We further aim to educate the novice researcher concerning many important aspects of QD synthesis, water-solubilization, functionalization, and usage in biological imaging and sensing that are generally not discussed in the literature. We will also summarize several recent transformative examples of using qu

Widespread application of mammography and breast ultrasound has led to improved recognition and delineation of breast lesions. Localization of these lesions with specialized, computerized stereotactic radiographic equipment or ultrasound imaging with subsequent use of this image to guide percutaneous core sampling of the abnormal area is less invasive, less painful, highly accurate, and less expensive than incisional breast biopsy with preoperative needle localization. These image-guided techniques have progressively matured in recent years, are used regularly by more and more surgeons, and ar

Despite developments in contraceptive technology and changes in societal norms, adolescent pregnancy remains a key issue for politicians, social scientists, health care providers, and educators. The adolescent's access to contraception and abortion services continues to spark legal debate. The implications of research call for the development of innovative programs to address larger issues, such as poverty and limited access to health care, in the management and prevention of adolescent pregnancies. Clinical interventions, such as school-linked clinics to provide contraception and prenatal car

A process is described by which trapping technology is being taught to a rural community which has been affected continuously by an epidemic of sleeping sickness for over a decade. Through a systematic health education programme, people are actively involved in making and setting traps and in learning about the general characteristics of the tsetse fly and the disease. A mono-screen trap has been developed for community use and is being used to trap flies. This is the first time that this kind of community participation has been attempted in tsetse control--and this approach is discussed in re

Cancer surgery remains a cornerstone of treatment for solid malignancies worldwide, yet substantial disparities persist in the training of surgical oncologists across regions and countries. Differences in training duration, accreditation, clinical exposure, multidisciplinary involvement, mentorship, and research activity contribute to variation in surgical outcomes and widen existing gaps in cancer morbidity and mortality. DISSECT (Disparities in Surgical Specialization and Education in Cancer Training) is a European Collaboration in Science and Technology (COST Action) aimed at systematically

Ovarian cancer (OC) remains a lethal gynecological malignancy with challenges in early diagnosis, treatment monitoring, and overcoming drug resistance. Liquid biopsy, a noninvasive approach analyzing tumor-derived components in bodily fluids, has emerged as a promising tool in OC management. This review summarizes advances in liquid biopsy technologies, focusing on circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) and circulating tumor cells (CTCs). ctDNA enables minimally invasive assessment for diagnosis, prognosis, treatment guidance (e.g., BRCA1/2-targeted therapy), minimal residual disease (MRD) detection, a

Liver transplantation is the standard therapy for end-stage liver disease, but the long-standing shortage of donor livers has constrained its advancement. The use of standard donor criteria expansion partially alleviates the supply-demand imbalance but increases postoperative complication risks. Extracorporeal mechanical perfusion mitigates ischemia-reperfusion injury, extends preservation time, and enables functional assessment and partial repair of the liver under ex vivo settings. Current clinical evidence confirms that short-term mechanical perfusion positively improves outcomes, but it st

Patients with spina bifida (SB) are highly susceptible to pressure injuries (PIs) due to limited mobility and sensory deficits, and they may occur during multiple surgical procedures. The article highlights that PIs, which significantly increase hospital costs and extend patient stays, can be prevented mainly through evidence-based interventions. One of the critical technologies used at this stage is pressure mapping to monitor and optimize pressure distribution on surfaces, whether lying or seated, particularly during prolonged medical procedures. Additionally, the article emphasizes the impo

As the role of technology expands in healthcare, so does the need to support its implementation and integration into the clinic. The concept of a new team member, the digital navigator, able to assume this role is introduced as a solution. With a digital navigator, any clinic today can take advantage of digital health and smartphone tools to augment and expand existing telehealth and face to face care. The role of a digital navigator is suitable as an entry level healthcare role, additional training for an experienced clinician, and well suited to peer specialists. To facilitate the training o

The disproportionate distribution of financial, educational, social, and medical resources between some rich countries of the northern hemisphere and less fortunate societies creates a moral challenge of global dimension. The development of new forms of highly advanced medical technologies, including neoorgans and xenografts, as well as the promotion of health literacy and predictive and preventive medical services might reduce some problems in allocational justice. Most governments and the World Health Organization (WHO) reject financial and other rewards for living organ donors thus indirect

Pseudo-obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract is a rare disorder of impaired gastrointestinal motility. The more common symptoms of pseudo-obstruction in the infant or child include dysphagia, nausea, vomiting, abdominal distention, abdominal pain, and constipation. The majority of children have symptoms within the first year of life. Chronic cases of pseudo-obstruction are associated with neuropathic or myopathic changes in other parts of the body. Bladder dysfunction and neurological problems have been reported. The diagnosis of pseudo-obstruction is based on history, physical examination
