BACKGROUND: Bleeding from gastric varices larger than 2 cm in diameter represents a major limitation for endoscopic hemostasis.
METHODS: Endoscopic ligation of gastric varices was performed with detachable snares and elastic bands in 41 patients who had recent bleeding from gastric varices larger than 2 cm in diameter. Gastric varices larger than 2 cm were ligated with detachable snares, and then adjacent small gastric varices were ligated with elastic bands.

Invasion of the visceral pleura is an important component of lung carcinoma staging, and in some studies is an independent prognostic indicator. Evaluation of invasion by H&E may be indeterminate. Previous angioplasty studies have used angiography and intravascular ultrasound to obtain vascular dimensions. These imaging methods do not always provide reliable measurements due to limitations in image orientation and resolution. In this study, high-resolution (0.1 x 0.1 x 0.5 mm) transverse CT slices were obtained from human common-iliac arteries in vitro to study their elastic response pre- and post-angioplasty. Seven iliacs from five patients were imaged over the physiological pressure range both pre- and post-angioplasty. Contrast was obtained with humidified air surrounding the artery.

Only nine cases of Costello syndrome have been described so far. No definitive pathologic abnormalities have been found on skin biopsies. We undertook a quantitative study of the elastic tissue of the skin in one case of Costello syndrome in order to obtain objective scores of area, fragmentation, branching and texture of the elastic tissue, comparing it to cutis laxa syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and normal skin.
