Interfacial Charge Transfer Governs Bias-Polarity-Selective Electroluminescence in van der Waals Tunneling Heterostructures.

Inelastic electron tunneling (IET) provides an efficient route for electroluminescence (EL) in van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures, yet the … uces Fermi-level pinning and asymmetric band alignment, which enhances both the IET probability and energy transfer efficiency under positive bias while suppressing them under negative bias. The control device based on monolayer WSe2 exhibits nearly symmetric EL, confirming this mechanism. Our results establish interfacial charge transfer as a pivotal and tunable …

Numerical Analysis on Flow and Heat Transfer Performance of High-Pressure Hydrogen/Methane Mixtures in Horizontal Pipelines.

Blending hydrogen with natural gas is necessary before fully transitioning to pure hydrogen energy. This approach also offers a practical way to reduce carbon emissions. High-pressure hydrogen/methane mixtures are the study object, and the flow and heat transfer performance inside horizontal pipelines are investigated through numerical analysis. General flow and heat transfer trends for the mixture components are identified across varying mole fractions, mass flow rates, ambient temperatures, and operating pressures. The results indicate that the addition of hydrogen reduces frictional resista

Coenzyme-functionalized photo-redox catalysis for low-energy click labeling.

Photo-redox catalysis has emerged as a new generation of biochemical protocols in proximity labeling, noninvasive therapy, ultrafast activation. However, the well-developed photocatalysts cannot simultaneously possess low-energy absorption and high excited potentials to initiate photochemical reactions. Herein, we develop new Ru-PCs as bio-photocatalyst exhibiting both green-light absorption and high Ered*. Ru-PCs cooperatively function with natural coenzyme riboflavin (RF) via an integrated proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) process to in situ transform Ru-PCs with two distinct ligands a

Influence of lipid bilayer head group polarity on micelle behavior and surfactant transfer: a molecular dynamics simulation study.

Molecular dynamics simulations with umbrella sampling were conducted to investigate the behavior of micelles on polar and non-polar lipid bilayer surfaces and surfactant transfer from the SLE2S micelle to the bilayers. Two-dimensional potential of mean force (PMF) profiles reveal that the micelle avoids interaction with the polar 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) bilayer, maintaining its spherical shape. In contrast, it adheres tightly to the non-polar CER NS 24 : 0 ceramide (Cer240) bilayer, exhibiting an upper hemispherical shape. Electrostatic interactions govern the micell

Tuning of Optoelectronic Properties in Oligo(phenyleneethynylene)-Based Cocrystals through Modulation of Charge-Transfer Interactions.

Organic multicomponent cocrystals with semiconducting properties have gained wide interest due to their potential in solid-state optoelectronic applications. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of an oligo-(phenyleneethynylene) (OPE) derivative and its cocrystals with 2,3,5,6-tetrachloroterephthalonitrile (TCPN) and 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene (TCNB) to explore the optical properties and charge-transfer interactions. The optical property of the charge-transfer cocrystals was dependent on the in-crystal geometry of luminophore OPE and charge-transfer interactions. The study also explored t

Reversible Switching Based on Truly Intramolecular Long-Range Proton Transfer─Turning the Theoretical Concept into Experimental Reality.

Herein, we demonstrate a working prototype of a conjugated proton crane, a reversible tautomeric switching molecule in which truly intramolecular long-range proton transfer occurs in solution at room temperature. The system consists of a benzothiazole rotor attached to a 7-hydroxy quinoline stator. According to the experimental and theoretical results, the OH proton is delivered under irradiation to the quinolyl nitrogen atom through a series of consecutive proton transfer and twisting steps. The use of a rigid rotor prevents undesired side processes that decrease the switching performance in

Particle on a Rod: Surface-Tethered Catalyst on CdS Nanorods for Enzymatically Active Nicotinamide Cofactor Generation.

The photochemical generation of nicotinamide cofactor 1,4-NADH, facilitated by inorganic photosensitizers, emerges as a promising model system for investigating charge transfer phenomena at the interface of semiconductors and bacteria, with implications for enhancing photosynthetic biohybrid systems (PBSs). However, extant semiconductor nanocrystal model systems suffer from achieving optimal conversion efficiency under visible light. This study investigates quasi-one-dimensional CdS nanorods as superior light absorbers, surface modified with catalyst Cp*Rh(4,4'-COOH-bpy)Cl2 to produce enzymati

Porous translucent electrodes enhance current generation from photosynthetic biofilms.

Some photosynthetically active bacteria transfer electrons across their membranes, generating electrical photocurrents in biofilms. Devices harvesting solar energy by this mechanism are currently limited by the charge transfer to the electrode. Here, we report the enhancement of bioelectrochemical photocurrent harvesting using electrodes with porosities on the nanometre and micrometre length scale. For the cyanobacteria Nostoc punctiforme and Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 on structured indium-tin-oxide electrodes, an increase in current generation by two orders of magnitude is observed compared to

A strategy for predicting the crystal structures of flexible molecules: the polymorphism of phenobarbital.

A computational exploration of the low energy crystal structures of the pharmaceutical molecule phenobarbital is presented as a test of an approach for the crystal structure prediction of flexible molecules. Traditional transferable force field methods of modelling flexible molecules are unreliable for the level of accuracy required in crystal structure prediction and we outline a strategy for improving the evaluation of relative energies of large sets of crystal structures. The approach involves treating the molecule as a set of linked rigid units, whose conformational energy is expressed as

Complexes containing CO2 and SO2. Mixed dimers, trimers and tetramers.

Mixed dimers, trimers and tetramers composed of SO2 and CO2 molecules are examined by ab initio calculations to identify all minimum energy structures. While AIM formalism leads to the idea of a pair of C···O bonds in the most stable heterodimer, bound by some 2 kcal mol(-1), NBO analysis describes the bonding in terms of charge transfer from O lone pairs of SO2 to the CO π* antibonding orbitals. The second minimum on the surface, just slightly less stable, is described by AIM as containing a single O···O chalcogen bond. The NBO picture is that of two transfers in opposite directions: one from

Physisorption of trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene on novel zeta arsenene nanotubes - A first-principles study.

The structural stability of novel ζ-arsenene nanotubes (ζ-AsNT) is studied based on the density functional theory framework and is used as a base material for the detection of trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene vapours. The formation energy of ζ-AsNT is found to be -4.321 eV/atom and the energy band gap is 0.304 eV. Besides, the changes in the electronic properties of ζ-AsNT are explored with regard to the projected density of states, charge transfer, and electron density difference. The bandgap energy decreases for hollow site orientation to 0.205 and 0.204 eV for trichloroethylene and

Free-Energy-Gradient-Driven Iodine Regeneration toward Ultrastable Zinc-Iodine Batteries.

Rechargeable aqueous Zn-I2 batteries are attractive for safe, low-cost energy storage but remain fundamentally limited by severe self-discharge and poor cycling stability because sluggish ZnI2 oxidation impedes efficient iodine regeneration during charging. Herein, we confine highly dispersed iodine quantum dots within a Fe(CN)64--doped polypyrrole/polyaniline framework to establish a free-energy-gradient-driven regeneration pathway. During discharge, Fe-cyanide and N-rich sites immobilize polyiodide intermediates, suppressing shuttle and self-discharge. More importantly, during charging, the

Liposomal Nanoconfinement Enables Type I Photodynamic Conversion for Synergistic Cancer Photothermal-Immunotherapy.

Type-I photodynamic therapy (PDT) agents offer a promising approach for treating hypoxic tumors. However, previous reports mainly focused on thermodynamic modulation through molecular engineering to block the Type-II energy transfer pathway. Herein, we present a facile strategy to realize the conversion of Type II to Type I PDT by integrating liposomal confinement and electron/hydrogen transfer pathway. A multifunctional nanoplatform, RhM-R837@Lip was developed, which facilitates an efficient shift from Type II to Type I for hemicyanine-based photosensitizer (PS) by suppressing singlet oxygen …

Autophagic-active nanosystem for senile bone regeneration by in-situ mitochondrial biogenesis and intercellular transfer.

Natural intercellular mitochondrial transfer has been recognized as a pivotal mechanism in the treatment of various diseases. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), owing to their low bioenergetic demands and inherent homing capacity, are considered highly promising mitochondrial donor cells. However, this strategy is limited in senile osteoporosis (SOP) because large amounts of ROS produced by mitochondrial oxidative stress in senescent BMSCs (S-BMSCs) impairs their viability and function. Here, we report that in-situ treatment of senescent bone marrow-derived macrophages (S-BMDMs) with

The theoretical study of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer of 2,5-bis(benzoxazol-2-yl)thiophene-3,4-diol.

The symmetrical structures 2,5-bis(benzoxazol-2-yl)thiophene-3,4-diol (BBTD) can take shape two intramolecular hydrogen bonds in chloroform. In order to research the molecular dynamic behavior of BBTD upon photo-induced process, we utilize density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) to complete theoretical calculation. Through the comparison of bond length, bond angle, IR spectra, and frontier molecular orbitals between ground state (S0) and first excited state (S1), it clearly indicates that photoexcitation have slightly influence for intensity of hydr

Molecular Mechanisms of Microbial Extracellular Electron Transfer: The Importance of Multiheme Cytochromes.

Extracellular electron transfer is a key metabolic process of many organisms that enables them to exchange electrons with extracellular electron donors/acceptors. The discovery of organisms with these abilities and the understanding of their electron transfer processes has become a priority for the scientific and industrial community, given the growing interest on the use of these organisms in sustainable biotechnological processes. For example, in bioelectrochemical systems electrochemical active organisms can exchange electrons with an electrode, allowing the production of energy and added-v

However, their inherent collision properties r … the observed scaling with the molecule's parity splitting energies. Measurements of the correlated energy transfer in both collision partners yielded direct evidence of the suppression of the dipole-dipole interaction at low energies. Our results demonstrate how collisions between an important class of polar molecules evolve from high temperatures towards the ul …

Quantifying the Energetics of Protein-Mediated Stabilization of Membrane Deformation.

Membrane curvature plays a central role in a wide range of biological processes, yet a quantitative and transferable description of its underlying energetics remains challenging. In this work, we develop a "reaction coordinate" within the Umbrella-Sampling framework to compute the free-energy cost associated with local membrane bending in both coarse-grained and atomistic simulations. The methodology is systematically validated across diverse lipid environments, including pure bilayers with varying tail unsaturation, tail length, and headgroup chemistry, where it reproduces established trends
