Safety of intravenous tranexamic acid in patients undergoing supratentorial meningiomas resection: protocol for a randomised, parallel-group, placebo control, non-inferiority trial.

INTRODUCTION: Growing evidence recommends antifibrinolytic agent tranexamic acid (TXA) to reduce blood loss and transfusions rate in various surgical settings. However, postoperative seizure, as one of the major adverse effects of TXA infusion, has been a concern that restricts its utility in neurosurgery. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a randomised, placebo-controlled, non-inferiority trial. Patients with supratentorial meningiomas and deemed suitable for surgical resection will be recruited in the trial. Patients will be randomised to receive either a single administration of 20 mg/kg TXA or

Tobacco prevention and control interventions in humanitarian settings: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco has been a complex global problem that has adversely affected almost all the sectors of society. However, the ill-effects are often most reflected in humanitarian settings, which inadvertently are surmounted by fragile systems. We aim to map tobacco prevention and control intervention in humanitarian settings. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This scoping review will follow the guidelines of the Joanna Briggs Institute. A comprehensive search strategy was designed using Medical Subject Heading terms, subject experts and pertinent reviews. The search was conducted on Medline (throug

Effect of High-Intensity Interval Training, Moderate Continuous Training, or Guideline-Based Physical Activity on Peak Oxygen Uptake and Myocardial Fibrosis in Patients With Myocardial Infarction: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is an emerging method of cardiac rehabilitation, which is more and more popular in recent years. Research into the effect of HIIT on peak oxygen uptake (VO2 peak) and myocardial fibrosis among patients with myocardial infarction (MI) is lacking. Here, we describe the rationale along with the protocol for a clinical trial to test the following hypotheses: (1) compared with the control group, VO2 peak will be increased in both the moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) and HIIT groups and (2) compared with the control group, myocardial

Case report of successful treatment of clostridial colitis in a child using enteral oxygen therapy.

Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) has become a serious medical and epidemiological problem with a marked increase in incidence and severity [1]. CDI is responsible for 15-25% of all anti-biotic-associated diarrhea cases, with a considerable increase in the 21st century [2]. Recommended first-line therapy for CDI involves oral vancomycin [1]. Oxygen therapy might be a variant of etiological therapy for anaerobic infection, including CDI [3]. Here we present a case of successful treatment of clostridial colitis in a child by enteral oxygen administration (state scientific project "Investi

Identification of biomarkers that predict response to subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation in resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder: protocol for an open-label follow-up study.

INTRODUCTION: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of bilateral anteromedial subthalamic nucleus (amSTN) has been found to be helpful in a subset of patients with severe, chronic and treatment-refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Biomarkers may aid in patient selection and optimisation of this invasive treatment. In this trial, we intend to evaluate neurocognitive function related to STN and related biosignatures as potential biomarkers for STN DBS in OCD. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Twenty-four subjects with treatment-refractory OCD will undergo open-label STN DBS. Structural/functional imaging

Experiences of Venous Leg Ulcer persons following an individualised nurse-led education: protocol for a qualitative study using a constructivist grounded theory approach.

INTRODUCTION: Venous leg ulcers are slow-healing wounds with a high risk of recurrences. To prevent recurrences and promote healing, different nurse-led educational interventions have been developed. The impact of these interventions on self-management is ambiguous. Also, how persons with a venous leg ulcer experiences these educational sessions are poorly described. AIM: This study protocol presents the methodology to provide a comprehensive explanation of participants' journeys-of how they experience their individualised education sessions concerning self-management. Realist evaluation of maternity waiting home intervention models in Inhambane, Mozambique: protocol for a comparative embedded case study, the Mozambique-Canada Maternal Health Project.

INTRODUCTION: This is a study protocol that tests and refines realist theories regarding the uptake and scale-up of the linked maternity waiting home (hereafter MWH) and facility birth intervention in the Mozambican context. The theories were developed through a realist review of MWH-facility birth literature from low-income and middle-income countries. The aim of the proposed study is to contribute to a contextually refined understanding of the causal chains underlying MWH-facility birth adoption by pregnant women and their families, communities, the health system and donors. Negative prompts aimed at maintaining eating independence.

BACKGROUND: Psychological abuse of older people is difficult to recognise; specifically, nursing home residents have been documented to be at higher risk of psychological abuse during daily care, such as during feeding. Healthcare professionals adopt positive and negative verbal prompts to maintain residents' eating independence; however, negative prompts' purposes and implications have never been discussed to date. RESEARCH AIMS: To critically analyse negative verbal prompts given during mealtimes as forms of abuse of older individuals and violation of ethical principles. RESEARCH DESIGN: T

Research involving patients. Summary and recommendations of a report of the Royal College of Physicians.

The careful study of disease as it occurs in patients, and the equally careful scrutiny of the effects of treatment, are an indispensable part of the continuing process of improving the efficiency of diagnosis and the effectiveness of treatment. Most patients realise that experience gained from their own case may contribute to their personal benefit or to that of society and, if asked, readily agree to take part in research into their condition. Accordingly, a patient who willingly participates in research has the status of a volunteer similar to that of a healthy person so that some of the qu

Association between preoperative metformin exposure and postoperative nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing general anaesthesia: a protocol for a prospective observational cohort study in a Chinese tertiary hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common and distressing complication following surgery, persisting despite advances in prophylactic regimens. Growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) has been identified as a biomarker inversely associated with PONV risk and severity. As metformin is known to elevate circulating GDF-15 levels, we hypothesise that preoperative metformin use may be associated with a lower incidence of PONV. This study aims to evaluate the association between a history of preoperative metformin administration and the occurrence of PONV in adults undergo

AllPlay Dance autism: protocol for a randomised controlled trial of a community-based dance programme for children with autism.

INTRODUCTION: Motor skills are integral to numerous developmental domains throughout infancy and childhood. In autism, motor impairments are prevalent and pervasive, often appearing before core symptoms. These motor difficulties have a cascading effect on a child's broader physical and psychological health, including social, cognitive, emotional and behavioural functioning. Accordingly, researchers are increasingly interested in interventions that improve motor functioning, as these may have a downstream effect on broader developmental domains. One intervention that could address motor difficu

Time-weighted mean arterial pressure and pump flow during cardiopulmonary bypass in adults and its effects on neurological outcome parameters: a retrospective study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiopulmonary bypass has been used to perform complex cardiac surgery for over 70 years. Advances in bypass techniques and perioperative medicine have increased the safety of cardiac procedures, leading to reduced morbidity and mortality. Nevertheless, cardiopulmonary bypass still carries risks, including systemic inflammation and dysfunction of various organs. To date, optimal blood pressure management during cardiopulmonary bypass remains a subject of ongoing debate. Conflicting evidence exists regarding negative outcomes associated with both low and high mean arterial pressu
