Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients experience augmented blood pressure (BP) reactivity during exercise that is associated with an increas … 1). CKD patients with metabolic acidosis have augmented exercise-induced increases in BP and poorer exercise tolerance. There was no difference in change in muscle interstitial pH between groups, however, suggesting that augmented exercise BP responses in metabolic acidosis are not due to impaired muscle-buffering capacity.

Conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) intake has been reported to reduce body fat mass or increase lean body mass and to improve exercise outcome by modulating testosterone in humans. These reports have studied mostly overweight subjects; few were athletes. Therefore, in this study, the effect of CLA intake on endurance performance and anti-fatigue in student athletes was investigated. A double-blind, crossover study was conducted with 10 male student athletes. Each subject was administered with either CLA (net 0.9 g/day) or a placebo for 14 days. They were subjected to an exercise tolerance test (s…

Exercise causes alterations in redox homeostasis (ARH). Measuring ARH in elite athletes may aid in the identification of training tolerance, fatigued states, and underperformance. To the best of our knowledge, no studies have examined ARH in elite male and female distance runners at sea level. The monitoring of ARH in athletes is hindered by a lack of reliable and repeatable in-the-field testing tools and by the rapid turnaround of results. We examined the effects of various exercise intensities on ARH in healthy (non-over-reached) elite male and female endurance athletes using clinical point-

Drugs that induce an increased urine flow are used both legitimately (treatment of hypertension and oedema) and otherwise (rapid weight loss … carbohydrate metabolism, and the blood lipid profile. Performance studies generally show diminished exercise tolerance in direct proportion to the degree of hypohydration induced. This is not the case, however, in a clinical setting of compromised cardiopulmonary function, in which diuresis has direct and indirect inotropic effects which augment exercise tolerance a …

The authors provide the results of a comparative study of exercise tolerance (bicycle ergometry test) in 64 patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and in 68 patients with associated CHD and cerebral atherosclerosis. During the latter syndrome the working capacity was lowered as a result of less economical work of the circulatory apparatus. In particular, physical loading in such patients was accompanied by marked increment of the heart rate and blood pressure elevation. Increased heart oxygen requirement in the second group patients during exercise was accompanied by more frequent ischemic…

PURPOSE: Patients undergoing hemodialysis often experience impaired exercise tolerance and circulatory instability due to fluid removal and metabolic alterations during dialysis. Although rehabilitation is recommended for this population, the physiological effects of exercise performed after dialysis remain unclear. This study aimed to compare circulatory dynamics and skeletal muscle oxygenation during exercise performed post-dialysis and on non-dialysis days in maintenance hemodialysis patients, to characterize physiological differences that may inform rehabilitation timing.
METHODS: Twelve …

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary rehabilitation plays a positive role in improving exercise tolerance and reducing readmission rates in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), while the adherence of pulmonary rehabilitation in COPD patients is still poor. The active cycle of breathing techniques based on the Hope Theory is a method to enhance patients' confidence in overcoming the disease and improve the intrinsic motivation of exercise through symptom improvement such as cough and sputum evacuation ability.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of Hope Theory education combined with…

The beneficial effects of physical exercise on the decreased insulin sensitivity caused by detrimental lifestyle were reviewed based on experimental evidences. In epidemiological studies, disease prevention has been considered at three levels: primary (avoiding the occurrence of disease), secondary (early detection and reversal), and tertiary (prevention or delay of complications). The major purpose of physical exercise for primary prevention and treatment of lifestyle-related diseases is to improve insulin sensitivity. It is known that, during physical exercise, glucose uptake by the working

Patients with mitochondrial cytopathies often experience exercise intolerance and may have fixed muscle weakness, leading to impaired functional capacity and lower quality of life. Endurance exercise training increases Vo 2 max, respiratory chain enzyme activity, and improves quality of life. Resistance exercise training increases muscle strength and may lower mutational burden in patients with mitochondrial DNA deletions. Both modes of exercise appear to be well tolerated. Patients with mitochondrial cytopathy should consider alternating both types of exercise to derive the benefits from each

Exercise interventions through cardiac fitness programmes improve aerobic capacity and quality of life in paediatric patients with heart disease. The aim of this study was to characterise the landscape of paediatric cardiac fitness programmes via the Global Coalition for Fitness and Congenital Heart Disease (GloCo), an international network of experts providing exercise-based interventions for children and young adults with congenital and acquired heart disease. A survey was developed and distributed electronically to GloCo members and was completed by 40/53 individuals (response rate 75%), in

The causes and consequences of excess exercise ventilation (EEV) in patients with fibrosing interstitial lung disease (f-ILD) were explored. Twenty-eight adults with f-ILD and 13 controls performed an incremental cardiopulmonary exercise test. EEV was defined as ventilation-carbon dioxide output (⩒E-⩒CO2) slope ≥36 L/L. Patients showed lower pulmonary function and exercise capacity compared to controls. Lower DLCO was related to higher ⩒E-⩒CO2 slope in patients (P<0.05). 13/28 patients (46.4%) showed EEV, reporting higher dyspnea scores (P=0.033). Patients with EEV showed a higher dead space (

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Previous data suggest that large amounts of high-intensity stepping training in variable contexts (tasks and environments) may improve locomotor function, aerobic capacity, and treadmill gait kinematics in individuals poststroke. Whether similar training strategies are tolerated and efficacious for patients with other acute-onset neurological diagnoses, such as motor incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI), is unknown. Individuals with iSCI potentially have greater bilateral impairments. This case series evaluated the feasibility and preliminary short- and long-term effica

BACKGROUND: We examined whether slow heart rate recovery (HRR) after exercise testing as an estimate of impaired autonomic function is related to coronary artery calcification (CAC), an emerging marker of coronary atherosclerosis.
METHODS: We evaluated 2088 men who participated in a health-screening program that included measures of CAC and peak or symptom-limited cardiopulmonary exercise testing. HRR was calculated as the difference between peak heart rate (HR) during exercise testing and the HR at 2 min of recovery after peak exercise. We measured CAC using multidetector computed tomography
