We studied the anterior tibial compartment pressures during the application of a JOBST sequential intermittent pneumatic compression device on 5 healthy human volunteers (10 legs). Intracompartmental pressures were measured using a slit catheter. The measurements of interstitial pressures were highest at maximal calf inflation, and pressures were increased for approximately 120 seconds during each cycle. The anterior pituitary hormone serum levels of 13 patients of both sexes were examined for basal secretion and response to TRH-GnRH stimulus before and after parathyroidectomy. Plasma hyperkalaemia was induced in pregnant and lactating rats using a high potassium diet. Fetuses of high-K-diet mothers showed no increase in the potassium concentration [( K+]) of plasma, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and brain interstitial fluid, presumably due to placental control. X-ray diffraction was used to record the effects of metal cations on the structure of peripheral nerve myelin. A series of experiments were undertaken to compare oncotic gradients with osmotic gradients in the treatment of experimental cerebral oedema. Oedema was produced in dogs by a left parietal cold lesion. Animals were divided into three treatment groups. Group 1, the control animals, received intravenous crystalloid solutions after the cold lesion. Group 2 animals received mannitol, 1 gm/kg IV, one and four hours after the lesion. Group 3 animals received albumin, 1 gm/kg IV, one hour after the lesion, then a continuous albumin infusion. Serum osmotic and oncotic pressures were monitored hourly.
