An Artificial Intelligence Model for Predicting Trauma Mortality Among Emergency Department Patients in South Korea: Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Within the trauma system, the emergency department (ED) is the hospital's first contact and is vital for allocating medical resources. However, there is generally limited information about patients that die in the ED. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) model to predict trauma mortality and analyze pertinent mortality factors for all patients visiting the ED. METHODS: We used the Korean National Emergency Department Information System (NEDIS) data set (N=6,536,306), incorporating over 400 hospitals between 2016 and 2019. We included the

Honey Botanical Origin Authentication Using HS-SPME-GC-MS Volatile Profiling and Advanced Machine Learning Models (Random Forest, XGBoost, and Neural Network).

This study develops a comprehensive workflow integrating Headspace Solid-Phase Microextraction Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) with advanced supervised machine learning to authenticate the botanical origin of honeys from five distinct floral sources-coriander, orange blossom, astragalus, rosemary, and chehelgiah. While HS-SPME-GC-MS combined with traditional chemometrics (e.g., PCA, LDA, OPLS-DA) is well-established for honey discrimination, the application and direct comparison of Random Forest (RF), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and Neural Network (NN) models repr

An explainable hybrid SMPR-Net-XGBoost framework for automated lupus nephritis detection using medical image analysis.

Lupus Nephritis (LN) is among the worst renal manifestations of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) that may lead to irreversible damage to the kidneys without early diagnosis. The traditional diagnostic methods, especially renal biopsy, are invasive, expensive, and less suitable for frequent monitoring, which places a high demand on the reliability of computer-assisted diagnostic methods. This paper suggests a hybrid Deep Learning (DL) model that can explain the process of automated LN detection based on medical image analysis. The proposed framework uses Data-Adaptive Gaussian Average Filteri

Using machine learning to identify risk factors for short-term complications following thumb carpometacarpal arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint osteoarthritis is among the most common degenerative hand diseases. Thumb CMC arthroplasty, or trapeziectomy with or without tendon augmentation, is the most frequently performed surgical treatment and has a strong safety profile. Though adverse outcomes are infrequent, the ability to predict risk for complications has substantial clinical benefits. In the present study, we evaluated a well-known surgical database with machine learning (ML) techniques to predict short-term complications and reoperations after thumb CMC arthroplasty. METHODS: A ret

Genetic Risk Assessment of Nonsyndromic Cleft Lip with or without Cleft Palate by Linking Genetic Networks and Deep Learning Models.

Recent deep learning algorithms have further improved risk classification capabilities. However, an appropriate feature selection method is required to overcome dimensionality issues in population-based genetic studies. In this Korean case-control study of nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P), we compared the predictive performance of models that were developed by using the genetic-algorithm-optimized neural networks ensemble (GANNE) technique with those models that were generated by eight conventional risk classification methods, including polygenic risk score (PRS), r

Development and Validation of a Machine Learning Model for Incident Heart Failure Prediction in Chronic Kidney Disease: A Multicenter Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and heart failure (HF) share pathophysiological mechanisms, rendering HF one of the most burdensome cardiovascular complication in CKD. Current HF prediction models, derived from the general population, exhibit limited accuracy in CKD, thus necessitating a CKD-specific risk model and clinical implementation. METHODS: The development set comprised 52 251 patients with CKD from the China Renal Data System (70% training; 30% internal validation). External validation used 21 798 patients from independent Chinese hospitals and 3323 UK Biobank participants.

Multiclass leukemia cell classification using hybrid deep learning and machine learning with CNN-based feature extraction.

Leukemia is the most prevalent form of blood cancer, affecting individuals across all age groups. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment and improved clinical outcomes. Peripheral blood smear analysis, a key non-invasive diagnostic tool, often suffers from subjective interpretation, inter-observer variability, and a lack of readily available expertise. Although deep learning approaches, particularly Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), have demonstrated exceptional performance in binary classification tasks, multiclass classification of leukemia subtypes remains chall

Data-Driven Two-Stage Framework for Identification and Characterization of Different Antibiotic-Resistant Escherichia coli Isolates Based on Mass Spectrometry Data.

In clinical microbiology, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) is frequently employed for rapid microbial identification. However, rapid identification of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Escherichia coli based on a large amount of MALDI-TOF MS data has not yet been reported. This may be because building a prediction model to cover all E. coli isolates would be challenging given the high diversity of the E. coli population. This study aimed to develop a MALDI-TOF MS-based, data-driven, two-stage framework for characterizing different AMRs

A data-efficient machine-learning approach for modeling the photodynamics of all-trans hexatriene based on multireference configuration interaction calculations.

Accurate simulations of excited-state photodynamics of polyenes remain challenging due to the high computational cost of multireference electronic-structure methods required to describe the coexistence of ionic and covalent states. In this work, active learning together with machine learning interatomic potentials (MLIP) trained on multireference configuration interaction with single and double excitations (MR-CISD) level energies and gradients, is used to enable efficient and accurate nonadiabatic molecular dynamics for all-trans-hexatriene. A compact yet representative training set is constr
