The present study explores possible changes between spider phobics (N=22) and nonphobics (N=28) in fear, disgust, and neutral ratings of neutral expressions as a result of their pairing with spiders. No statistically significant differences were detected between pre and post fear ratings of the expressions as a result of their association with spiders. However, post disgust ratings were marginally higher than pre disgust ratings and post neutral ratings were significantly lower than pre neutral ratings. The present study also examined differences in fear and disgust responding to threat-releva…

Studies using surface electromyography have demonstrated a reorganization of muscle activation patterns of the neck and shoulder muscles in patients with posttraumatic neck pain disability. The neurophysiologically oriented "pain adaptation" model explains this reorganization as a useful adaptation to prevent further pain and injury. The cognitive-behavioral-oriented "fear avoidance" model suggests that fear of movement, in addition to the effects of pain, modulates the muscle activation level. We analyzed the extent to which pain and fear of movement influenced the activation patterns of the …

The amygdala is critically involved in the processing of anxiety in adults, but little is known about the neurogenesis of trait-anxiety during adolescence. We correlated amygdala activity during visual presentations of fearful and happy faces with scores on the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children in 16 adolescents undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging. During fear perception, amygdala activity positively correlated with several social dimensions of anxiety, including peer rejection, humiliation, performing in public, and being separated from loved ones, but was not correlate…

We previously found that patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) were impaired with respect to recognition of fear and disgust in facial expressions. To investigate the neural mechanisms that underlie this impairment, we recorded visual event-related potentials (ERPs) in response to the viewing of fearful facial expressions. Ten normal elderly volunteers and nine patients with PD were studied. Fearful, surprised, and neutral facial expressions were presented randomly for 500 ms each, with a probability of 0.1, 0.1, and 0.8, respectively. The locations of the components of the ERPs were analyzed…

Fear (e.g. associated with the threat of an electric shock) causes an increase in initial pupil diameter (IPD) and a decrease in the amplitude of the light reflex response. There is evidence for dissociation between the two responses to threat: only the reduction in light reflex response amplitude is sensitive to the anxiolytic drug diazepam. We examined the effects of peripheral sympathetic blockade with the alpha(1)-adrenoceptor antagonist dapiprazole on both responses to threat on the basis of the hypothesis that only the response of the IPD will be affected, whereas the response of the lig…

The management of chronic illness is becoming increasingly patient-centred. Although patients with inflammatory bowel disease have a normal life expectancy, most individuals experience an impact of inflammatory bowel disease on their daily lives as well as on their attitudes, fears and beliefs. Although currently available therapies for ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are becoming increasingly effective, there are still many unmet needs to address in this patient population. Physicians and patients' spouses or significant others underestimate the type and severity of problems reported b…

Poulton and Menzies (Behaviour Research & Therapy 40 (2001) 127-149) review two lines of evidence as supporting a non-associative pathway to the origins of "evolutionary relevant phobias". First, in retrospective studies of mode of onset some recall they have always had this fear. We review here solid evidence that retrospective recall is notoriously unreliable. Second, they note as many nonphobics recall relevant associative learning experiences as do phobics. We argue such studies are very inconclusive because they fail to consider many experiential and personality vulnerability (and invulne…

The non-associative account of phobic etiology assumes that a number of specific fears (e.g., fear of heights, water, spiders, strangers, and separation) have an evolutionary background and may occur in the absence of learning experiences (e.g., conditioning). By this view, these specific fears pertain to stimuli that once posed a challenge to the survival of our prehistoric ancestors. Accordingly, they would emerge spontaneously during the course of normal development and only in a minority of individuals, these specific fears would persist into adulthood. While the non-associative approach h…

BACKGROUND: For irrational fears and their associated phobias, epidemiological studies suggest sex differences in prevalence and twin studies report significant genetic effects. How does sex impact on the familial transmission of liability to fears and phobias?
METHODS: In personal interviews with over 3000 complete pairs (of whom 1058 were opposite-sex dizygotic pairs), ascertained from a population-based registry, we assessed the lifetime prevalence of five phobias and their associated irrational fears analysed using a multiple threshold model. Twin resemblance was assessed by polychoric co…

This study uses a multidimensional scaling approach to investigate the hypothesis that spider fearful individuals give priority to a threat-safety dimension when making judgments. The results show that when making judgments about stimuli, spider fearful individuals (1) placed significantly greater comparative weighting on a threat-relevant dimension than on a non-emotive dimension (colour), and (2) tended to rate threatening pairs of stimuli and safe pairs of stimuli as more similar than did the nonfearful group. This prioritised dimensional processing suggests a mechanism by which phobics can…

The side effects of chemotherapy are feared by cancer patients as they begin their treatment. In this study, we investigated patients' anticipatory fears about chemotherapy. We then re-assessed these fears three to six months after the initial interview for patients who received chemotherapy during that time. We also examined symptom distress at these intervals. Hair loss, vomiting, infection, nausea, and weight loss were ranked as the most feared side effects of cancer treatment for the group as they began treatment. Patients beginning chemotherapy endorsed frequent or intense levels of fatig…

In 1996, a new variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD)-a disease that causes lack of coordination, muscle twitching or jerking, dementia, and, eventually, death-suddenly appeared in Great Britain. It is believed that the victims contracted the disease from eating the beef of cattle stricken with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or mad cow disease. As of December 1997, at least 25 people in the United Kingdom and France have contracted vCJD.

PURPOSE: This investigation was designed to examine both high- and low-dental-fear patients' perceptions about and anxiety responses to personal protective equipment (PPE) as presented in a videotaped, simulated interaction between oral healthcare worker and patient.
METHODS: Sixty-two individuals representing a convenience sample presented at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Dental School and were screened for eligibility. The Dental Fears Survey was administered to participants to assess level of dental fear. Subjects were then matched according to fear level, gender, and age, …

Viscerosensory and affective manifestations are often elicited by temporal lobe seizure discharges. They have been reproduced by amygdaloid stimulation in awake patients during stereotaxic exploration or neurosurgical procedures. They are not exclusively reproduced by stimulation of the amygdala, though most commonly they are evoked from it. Ictal fear is frequently, but not invariably, associated with a rising epigastric sensation, palpitations, mydriasis and pallor. We studied 50 patients (mean age 33 years) with intractable temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE): MRI volumetric measurements of amygda…

The acquisition of fear of heights in an undergraduate student sample was investigated. Height-fearful (n = 50) and non-fearful (n = 50) groups were formed on the basis of extreme scores to the heights item on the FSS-III (Wolpe & Lang, Behaviour Research and Therapy, 2, 27-30, 1964). Subjects were then assessed with a battery of measures including the Acrophobia Questionnaire (Cohen, Behaviour Therapy, 18, 17-23, 1977), self-rating of severity (Marks & Mathews, Behaviour Research and Therapy, 17, 263-267, 1979), global rating of severity (Michelson, Behaviour Research and Therapy, 24, 263-275…

This study aimed to clarify how manifestations and acquisition relate to diagnostic categories of dental fear in a population of self-referred dental fear patients, since diagnostic criteria specifically related to dental fear have not been validated. DSM III-R diagnostic criteria for phobias were used to compare with four existing dental fear diagnostic categories, referred to as the Seattle system. Subjects were 208 persons with dental fear who were telephone interviewed, of whom a subsample of 155 responded to a mailed Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and a modified…

This study investigated the prevalence of school refusal and school-related fears in a sample of 1034 Venezuelan children from 3 to 14 years of age. Fear surveys were administered to children older than 9 years and to the younger children's parents. In addition, parents and teachers completed questionnaires regarding the children's other behavior problems, and teachers reported on the children's school achievement and attendance. Although a significant proportion (17.7 per cent) of the children expressed intense fears of school, only rarely were such fears combined with high absenteeism or wit…
