Lying Time and Its Importance to the Dairy Cow: Impact of Stocking Density and Time Budget Stresses.

The stocking density of confinement dairy operations is one of the most important management factors in determining cows' ability to achieve the 12 hours per day of lying and 3 hours to 5 hours per day feeding that cows are highly motivated to engage in. Overstocking facilities consistently decreases lying time, alters feeding behaviors, decreases rumination times, and increases social stress. This article reviews the relevant literature to establish the recommended stocking density with freestall systems. Novel housing systems and the considerations of transition cows are also reviewed.

Feature Selection and Comparison of Machine Learning Algorithms in Classification of Grazing and Rumination Behaviour in Sheep.

Grazing and ruminating are the most important behaviours for ruminants, as they spend most of their daily time budget performing these. Continuous surveillance of eating behaviour is an important means for monitoring ruminant health, productivity and welfare. However, surveillance performed by human operators is prone to human variance, time-consuming and costly, especially on animals kept at pasture or free-ranging. The use of sensors to automatically acquire data, and software to classify and identify behaviours, offers significant potential in addressing such issues. In this work, data coll

Trophic niche, capture efficiency and venom profiles of six sympatric ant-eating spider species (Araneae: Zodariidae).

The arms race between specialist predators and their prey has resulted in the evolution of a variety of specific adaptations. In venomous predators, this can include venom composition, particularly if predators are specialized on dangerous prey. Here, we performed an integrative study using six species of highly specialized ant-eating spiders of the genus Zodarion to investigate their phylogeny, realized trophic niche, efficacy in the capture of various ant species and venom composition. Data on natural diet obtained by next-generation sequencing and field observations showed that the six Zoda

Changes in predator exposure, but not in diet, induce phenotypic plasticity in scorpion venom.

Animals embedded between trophic levels must simultaneously balance pressures to deter predators and acquire resources. Venomous animals may use venom toxins to mediate both pressures, and thus changes in this balance may alter the composition of venoms. Basic theory suggests that greater exposure to a predator should induce a larger proportion of defensive venom components relative to offensive venom components, while increases in arms races with prey will elicit the reverse. Alternatively, reducing the need for venom expenditure for food acquisition, for example because of an increase in sca

Copulation and mate guarding behavior in Triatoma brasiliensis (Hemiptera: Reduviidae).

The hematophagous bug Triatoma brasiliensis (Neiva) is an important vector of Chagas disease in Brazil. We describe the mating behavior of this species in a comparative manner and analyze the effect of time elapsed since the first imaginal bloodmeal on motivation of males to mate, on female mate-rejections, and on overall mating frequency. We also evaluate whether females of this species copulate with several males in short time intervals, and we examine whether the duration of copulation may vary in the presence of other males compared with what is observed with isolated pairs. Age affected t

[Adolescence and sexuality].

Different pathological states occurring during adolescence, such as anorexia, bulimia and suicidal attempts are seen as possible manifestations of psychological defence mechanisms against the anxiety-provoking bodily changes of puberty and the necessary psychological transformations inherent to adolescence and sexual maturation. The changes of object of desire and some sexual risk behaviours are illustrated by clinical vignettes. Music is suggested to play a role in the mobilisation of emotions, bodily sensations and in the construction of an imaginary world and thus to be a factor--a part fro

Pyloroplasty does not disrupt liquid phase gastric emptying or CCK-induced satiety.

To assess the hypothesis that cholecystokinin (CCK) induces satiety by constricting the pylorus and inhibiting the rate of gastric emptying, we impaired pyloric function in 8 experimental animals using a Heincke-Mikulicz pyloroplasty procedure. Liquid phase gastric emptying was measured with a double-sampling procedure. We found that pyloroplasty did not disrupt the pattern of gastric emptying of saline or nutrient under control conditions. CCK also showed emptying in both pyloroplasty and control animals. Finally, pyloroplasty did not affect the ability of CCK to induce satiety. We provide fu

Gastric suction in healthy newborn infants. Effects on circulation and developing feeding behaviour.

Gastric emptying of newborn infants is a procedure performed to prevent aspiration of gastric contents. The present investigation was conducted to study the effects of gastric suction on circulatory and behavioural parameters in 21 healthy newborn children (11 cases, 10 controls). A small elevation in mean arterial blood pressure was observed during gastric suction. The incidence of retching was also increased. In all children spontaneous sucking and rooting movements, as well as state of sleep and wakefulness were recorded. In the control group spontaneous sucking and rooting movements starte

The relation of food quantity to rumination behavior.

Preliminary work suggested that the quantity of food ingested by retarded individuals who usually ruminated following meals was related to the frequency and duration of ruminating responses. This possible relation was experimentally examined by systematically varying food quantity from regular portions to satiation levels for three retarded individuals who exhibited high levels of ruminating. A clear functional relation of food quantity to ruminating emerged, with satiation procedures producing rapid and large decreases in the relatively high frequencies and durations of ruminating characteris

Juvenile Hormone Involved in the Defensive Behaviors of Soldiers in Termite Reticulitermes aculabialis.

Eusocial insects have evolved specific defensive strategies to protect their colonies. In termite colonies, soldiers perform a colony-level defense by displaying mechanical biting, head-banging and mandible opening-closing behaviors. However, few studies have been reported on the factors modulating defensive behaviors in termites. Owing to JH (juvenile hormone) being involved in soldier differentiation, JH was speculated to affect defensive behaviors in termite soldiers. To determine the effect of JH on the defensive behaviors of termite soldiers, we performed a JHA-feeding and RaSsp1-silencin

Metabolic indicators of nutritional stress are not predictive of abnormal oral behavior in piglets.

Belly nosing is an abnormal oral-nasal behavior that can develop to high levels in newly weaned piglets and may signal nutritional need. The effects of feed restriction on both behavior and metabolic serum parameters were examined in 128 weaned piglets. All pigs were fed ad libitum during week 1, and during week 2, half of all pens (N=8) were restricted to 65% of ad libitum intake. Blood samples were collected on days 3 and 10 after weaning and behavior was observed from video recordings on days 5 and 12. Piglets were classified as early 'nosers' or early 'non-nosers' based on their behavior o

Expression of guanylate cyclase C in human prefrontal cortex depends on sex and feeding status.

INTRODUCTION: Guanylate cyclase C (GC-C) has been detected in the rodent brain in neurons of the cerebral cortex, amygdala, midbrain, hypothalamus, and cerebellum. METHODS: In this study we determined GC-C protein expression in Brodmann areas (BA) 9, BA10, BA11, and BA32 of the human prefrontal cortex involved in regulation of feeding behavior, as well as in the cerebellar cortex, arcuate nucleus of hypothalamus and substantia nigra in brain samples of human 21 male and 13 female brains by ELISA with postmortem delay < 24 h. RESULTS: GC-C was found in all tested brain areas and it was expres…

Prenatal exposure to alcohol impairs social play behavior in adolescent male mice.

Prenatal ethanol exposure affects brain development and causes neural impairment, leading to both cognitive and behavioral consequences in the offspring. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of prenatal exposure to small amounts of alcohol on social play behavior in adolescent male offspring. Swiss mice were prenatally exposed to ethanol by feeding pregnant dams with a liquid diet containing 25% alcohol-derived calories during gestation (alcohol group). They were then compared to both pair-fed dams that received an isocaloric liquid diet containing 0% alcohol-derived

Lateral hypothalamic melanin concentrating hormone-expressing neurons both promote and are required for cue-potentiated feeding.

Food-related stimuli can promote feeding behaviors independent of metabolic need. Cue-potentiated feeding (CPF) studies in rodents offer the potential to reveal the psychobiological mechanisms underlying learned overeating behaviors. We examined whether lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) cells expressing the feeding signal Melanin Concentrating Hormone (MCH) are sufficient and necessary for CPF. Tg(Pmch-Cre) mice received bilateral infusion of the Cre-dependent inhibitory DREADD (hM4Di), or optrode placement together with the excitatory opsin ChR2. Mice received food deprivation by restricting ac…

Culex quinquefasciatus Mosquitoes Exposed to a Juvenile Hormone Analog may Take a Bloodmeal While Gravid.

Blood avidity in female mosquitoes has been shown to be regulated by cycles of hormone production that determine both egg development and distinct behaviors. Specifically, juvenile hormone (JH) drives early egg development until a bloodmeal is acquired, and JH titers are positively correlated with active host seeking and blood feeding behaviors. After a bloodmeal, JH levels fall, and female mosquitoes become refractory to host seeking and biting. While JH analogs (JHAs) are commonly used as larvicides for mosquito control, the effects of these compounds on adult mosquitoes are not well underst…

Tilapia On-Farm Welfare Assessment Protocol for Semi-intensive Production Systems.

The aim of this study was to develop and test a tilapia on-farm welfare assessment protocol, based on Brazilian semi-intensive production systems. The study included two mains steps: the elaboration of tilapia welfare protocol and its on-field feasibility test. The protocol, including the potential indicators organized into health, environmental, nutritional, and behavioral categories, was tested on three farms. Skin, eyes, gills, jaws, fins, and vertebral spine were individually examined in 139 individual tilapias. Water physicochemical parameters and production system were considered. The ov
