Glucose and oxygen in the early intrauterine environment and their role in developmental abnormalities.

The early life environment can have profound impacts on the developing conceptus in terms of both growth and morphogenesis. These impacts can manifest in a variety of ways, including congenital fetal anomalies, placental dysfunction with subsequent effects on fetal growth, and adverse perinatal outcomes, or via effects on long-term health outcomes that may not be detected until later childhood or adulthood. Two key examples of environmental influences on early development are explored: maternal hyperglycaemia and gestational hypoxia. These are increasingly common pregnancy exposures worldwide,

DHEA in Prenatal and Postnatal Life: Implications for Brain and Behavior.

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfated congener (DHEAS) are the principal C19 steroid produced by the adrenal gland in many mammals, including humans. It is secreted in high concentrations during fetal life, but synthesis decreases after birth until, in humans and some other primates, there is a prepubertal surge of DHEA production by the adrenal gland-a phenomenon known as adrenarche. There remains considerable uncertainty about the physiological role of DHEA and DHEAS. Moreover, the origin of the trophic drives that determine the waxing and waning of DHEA synthesis are poorly underst

Extra-uterine (abdominal) full term foetus in a 15-day pregnant rabbit.

BACKGROUND: While ectopic pregnancies account for 1-2% of all pregnancies, abdominal pregnancy is extremely rare, accounting for approximately 1% of ectopic pregnancies. Extrauterine abdominal pregnancy is defined as the implantation and development of an embryo in the peritoneal cavity. The present report is the first of an incidental case of abdominal pregnancy within four full-term foetus simultaneously with 2 weeks of physiological gestation in a healthy doe rabbit. CASE PRESENTATION: The doe was born on November 3, 2014 and the first partum took place on May 18, 2015. The doe had previou

A comparative morphologic and morphometric study about geniculate ganglion development in man and in rat.

CONCLUSIONS: Human-rat geniculate ganglion (GG) have multiple origins: (1) An initial proximity (20 μm) to the endocranial foramen of the IAM, suggests neural crest induction; and (2) The influence of epibranchial placodes: the tensor tympani muscle (TTM) and the otic apical coil. OBJECTIVES: This study was undertaken to determine the comparative development of human-rat GG. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A light microscopic study of the GG in human material obtained from spontaneous abortions at 9, 13, 14, 17, 18, and 30 weeks, and one neonate was done. This study examined Webster rat embryos and a

Development of the human tail bud and splanchnic mesenchyme.

The purpose of this paper was to shed some light on anorectal development from a viewpoint of the tail bud and splanchnic mesenchyme for better understanding of the morphogenesis of the human anorectum. Human embryos ranging from Carnegie stage 11 to 23 (CS 11 to 23) were adopted in this study. Seventeen embryos preserved at the Congenital Anomaly Research Center of Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine were histologically examined. The cloaca, extending caudally to the hindgut, was dramatically enlarged, particularly both its dorsal portion and membrane, that is, the cloacal membrane r

The growth of the testes during the fetal period.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the size and position of the fetal testes during gestation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study comprised 48 testes obtained from 24 human fetuses with no congenital abnormalities, aged 14-40 weeks. The development of the fetuses was evaluated by measuring the crown-rump length. Testicular size was assessed as the height, width, thickness and weight, and the position of testes determined during fetal development. RESULTS: The testes in 11 fetuses (22 testes) aged 14-37 weeks were in the abdominal cavity; no testis had descended to the scrotum in any fetus until 27 weeks …

"Wavy ribs". A reversible pathologic finding in rat fetuses.

A literature of 74 scientific papers addressing the occurrence of "wavy ribs" in fetuses of small rodents has been collected with the support of a computer-assisted search on MEDLINE, TOXLINE, BIOSIS and EXCERPTA MEDICA systems (1982-1993) and has been critically examined. Numerous compounds of a large variation in chemical structure and biological activity, if given to pregnant rats during the later period of organogenesis, are known to cause "wavy ribs" in their fetuses, a reversible pathologic finding which is rarely observed in untreated controls. According to literature, causative factors

Embryonic and fetal morphology of the black agouti.

Understanding embryonic and fetal development is fundamental to interpreting life-history strategies associated with neonatal survival in mammals. This study provides a detailed characterization of the intrauterine development of the hystricognath rodent, the black agouti (Dasyprocta fuliginosa), one of the most hunted species in the Amazon. The developmental patterns are compared with those of other precocial and altricial mammals, offering insights into species-specific reproductive strategies. A total of 90 conceptuses (2 embryos and 88 fetuses) from 49 pregnant females collected from subsi…

Long-bone growth in fetuses with Down syndrome.

Short stature is a well-recognized component of Down syndrome. The femur lengths of affected fetuses have been observed to be shorter than normal, with a ratio of actual to expected femur length of less than 0.91 indicating a high risk of trisomy. To further evaluate this finding we have determined the relationship between limb lengths and gestational age in 37 postmortem fetal specimens with trisomy 21. Control values were obtained from 174 normal fetuses. Measurements of the femur, tibia, fibula, humerus, radius, and ulna were made from roentgenograms or by direct measurement of the bone. Mo

Defects in androgen biosynthesis causing 46,XY disorders of sexual development.

At least one genetic defect in each reaction of the classical androgen biosynthesis pathway has been described. For some steps, such as the conversion of cholesterol to pregnenolone and the 17,20-lyase reaction, two or three genetic defects cause similar disorders with overlapping phenotypes and biochemical profiles. The elucidation of the molecular basis for these diseases has helped to define the pathways, essential genes, and enzymatic steps required to make androgens, and this knowledge is being exploited to develop better treatments of androgen-dependent diseases. Furthermore the descript

Longitudinal Assessment of Abdominal Circumference versus Estimated Fetal Weight in the Detection of Late Fetal Growth Restriction.

OBJECTIVES: To perform a longitudinal assessment comparison between estimated fetal weight (EFW) and abdominal circumference (AC) in the prediction of late fetal growth restriction (FGR) as opposed to small for gestational age (SGA). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cohort of unselected singleton pregnancies scanned at 32±2 and 37±1 weeks was created. Longitudinal growth assessment by calculating the conditional AC and conditional EFW was performed, and both parameters were compared for their prediction capacity for late FGR and SGA. Conditional standards set an expected size (EFW or AC) given a first

Current status of fetal neurodevelopmental assessment: Four-dimensional ultrasound study.

With the latest advent of four-dimensional (4-D) ultrasound, fetal neurobehavioral or neurodevelopmental assessment can be easily and readily performed. Using this technique, typical fetal movements and behavioral patterns have become apparent in all three trimesters of pregnancy. In twin pregnancy, 4-D ultrasound facilitates the precise evaluation of inter-twin contact and intra-pair stimulation. New fetal neurobehavioral assessment tests, such as Kurjak's Antenatal Neurodevelopmental Test and the Fetal Observable Movement System, may reflect the normal and abnormal neurological development o

Fetal Cerebral Artery Mitochondrion as Target of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure.

Prenatal alcohol exposure results in an array of developmental abnormalities known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). Despite the high prevalence of FASDs, therapeutic interventions against accidental or intended exposure of developing fetuses to alcohol are limited. This review outlines current knowledge about mitochondria in cerebral blood vessels as a potential target for anti-FASDs intervention. First, it describes the multifaceted role of mitochondria in maintaining the cerebral artery diameter as shown in adult tissue. Second, current literature on alcohol-driven damage of mito

Accuracy of Prenatal Ultrasound in Detecting Growth Abnormalities in Triplets: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Significant management decisions in triplet pregnancies are made based mainly on ultrasound measurements of fetal growth, although there is a paucity of data examining the accuracy of fetal weight measurements in these gestations. To evaluate accuracy of prenatal ultrasound to diagnose growth abnormalities (intrauterine growth restriction, severe growth discordance) in triplet pregnancies, a retrospective cohort study of 78 triplet pregnancies (234 fetuses) delivered at a single tertiary hospital from January 2004 to May 2015 was performed. Growth percentiles from the last ultrasound were deri

Fetal biometry: relevance in obstetrical practice.

Fetal biometry is the measurement of the fetus and various segments of the fetal anatomy. Every part of the fetal anatomy may be imaged, but fetal head, abdomen, and femur measurements are the most commonly used, as well as the crown-rump length in early gestation. These biometric measurements can be used to estimate gestational age and fetal weight, evaluate interval fetal growth, and identify fetuses who are either growth restricted or macrosomic. These measurements may influence antepartum and intrapartum management and may be used to predict peripartum outcomes. Biometry is therefore an in

Melatonin and pregnancy in the human.

The purpose of this systematic review is to access the current state of knowledge concerning the role for melatonin in human pregnancy. Melatonin is a neuroendocrine hormone secreted nightly by pineal gland and regulates biological rhythms. The nighttime serum concentration of melatonin shows an incremental change toward the end of pregnancy. This small lipophilic indoleamine crosses the placenta freely without being altered. Maternal melatonin enters the fetal circulation with ease providing photoperiodic information to the fetus. Melatonin works in a variety of ways as a circadian rhythm mod

Effect of prenatal exposure to diagnostic ultrasound on the development of mice.

Pregnant Swiss albino mice were exposed to diagnostic ultrasound (3.5 MHz, approximately 65 mW) for 10 min on Day 3.5 (preimplantation period), 6.5 (early organogenesis period), or 11.5 (late organogenesis period) of gestation. Sham-exposed controls were maintained for comparison. Exposed as well as control fetuses were dissected out on the 18th day of gestation, and changes in total mortality, body weight, body length, head length, brain weight, sex ratio, and microphthalmia were recorded. Exposure on Day 3.5 of gestation resulted in a small increase in the resorption rate and a significant r

Some influences on cognition in early life: a short review of recent opinions.

Many factors can affect a child's ability to learn, and these may operate before, during, and after birth. Some of these are considered, and are hopefully important, but not necessarily the most obvious. The intrauterine environment may not be so influential as the infant's genetic endowment, but nevertheless is of considerable importance. For example, malnutrition resulting from placental insufficiency leading to small-for-date babies can impair brain development. Also a relationship between birth weight and cognitive function in early adult life has been demonstrated; and the babies' conditi
