Congenital true complete symphalangism of all proximal interphalangeal joints of hands with carpal anomalies: a case report.

Symphalangism is a rare condition which manifests in either PIP or DIP joint congenital fusion. Symphalangism may be with some other skeletal deformities. In our case, all PIP joints of both hands were fused with bilateral hypoplasia of carpal bones and Minaar type III lunatotriquetral coalition congenitally. No motion was detected in PIP joints with absence of cutaneous creases over all PIP joints. Radiologically, carpal hypoplasia and lunatotriquetral coalition were seen in all fingers with the absence of PIP joints. The patient's skeletal survey revealed no other pathology. He had no compla

[Intra-articular rheumatoid nodules of the knee joint].

Intra-articular rheumatoid nodules found in 6 knee joints of 4 patients with rheumatoid arthritis were reported with histological findings. All patients were women, ranging in age from 32 to 61 years, with 6 to 41-year history of rheumatoid arthritis. The masses were exclusively in the anterolateral aspect of the joint. Snapping occurred when the joint was flexed by 20 degrees in four joints and by 60 degrees in two. The masses had the sizes of a thumb tip to index-finger tip, and were elastic and soft. Histologic examination of the masses revealed the typical formation of rheumatoid nodule in

Buddy taping: is it a safe method for treatment of finger and toe injuries?

BACKGROUND: Buddy taping is a well known and useful method for treating sprains, dislocations, and other injuries of the fingers or toes. However, the authors have often seen complications associated with buddy taping such as necrosis of the skin, infections, loss of fixation, and limited joint motion. To our knowledge, there are no studies regarding the complications of buddy taping. The purpose of this study was to report the current consensus on treating finger and toe injuries and complications of buddy taping by using a specifically designed questionnaire. METHODS: A questionnaire was de

Efficacy of Splinting in Managing Adult Trigger Finger: A Systematic Review of Short-Term Outcomes.

PURPOSE: Trigger finger is a common hand condition often managed conservatively with splinting, which reduces pain and improves function by immobilizing the affected digit. Splinting is a viable alternative for patients wishing to avoid corticosteroid injections or surgery. Short-term studies suggest it effectively relieves symptoms; however, adherence can be challenging. This systematic review evaluates the short-term efficacy of splinting for trigger finger and aims to identify the most effective splint. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted following Preferred Reporting Items for Syst

Fixed post-traumatic flexion-contractures of digits. Review of thirty-three cases.

A fixed post-traumatic flexion contracture of a finger is usually secondary to multiple previous operations. We have observed that a former flexor tendon laceration is not constant and is missing in 18% of our cases. The flexor tendons are, nevertheless, always involved in the contracture. A volar skin contracture was present in all cases, but only in half of them was noted a retraction of the volar components of the PIP joint. This articular involvement has no statistical correlation with the time elapsed from the onset of the contracture. We have reviewed 33 cases of post-traumatic flexions

Immediate effects of a novel hand rehabilitation board on fine motor skills in children with cerebral palsy: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: In children with cerebral palsy (CP), fine motor skills limit forearm supination and active extension of the elbow, wrist, or fingers. Therapeutic interventions focusing on improving the ranges at these joints while facilitating active movements are the key to augmenting fine motor skills. OBJECTIVE: This pilot study examines if children with CP (with UE involvement) exposed to the Novel Hand Rehabilitation (NHR) Board will demonstrate 1) changes in spasticity and passive ROM of forearm and wrist/finger muscles, and 2) improvement in fine motor abilities. METHODS: The forearm and

A new technique in surgical treatment of congenital and spontaneous extensor tendon snapping: Dorsalization-ulnarization of the metacarpal head.

The present study reports results of a metacarpal transposition technique we have developed for congenital and spontaneous extensor tendon snapping. Six patients with a mean age of 14 years (range: 12-19 years) were included and evaluated retrospectively. They had Rayan-Murray type-3 atraumatic chronic extensor tendon instability: 2 on the middle finger, 3 on the ring finger, and 1 on the index and middle fingers. In selecting the cases, preoperative examination included elevation of the metacarpals to check whether this decreased the tendon snapping, and patients in whom no snapping persisted

The "Braids Lady" of Arezzo: a case of rheumatoid arthritis in a 16th century mummy.

OBJECTIVE: To diagnose a probable case of rheumatoid arthritis in a mummified female body from the 16th century and to backdate the first clinical diagnosis, entering the diatribe regarding the ancientness of the disease. METHODS: Image techniques such as normal X-ray, X-ray by mammography, total body CT and high resolution CT were used. Microscopic examination by stereomicroscopy was performed. Samples of tissue were submitted to histology. These data and the review of past literary references, of artistic representations and of paleopathological cases provided an interesting contribution to

Limited joint mobility in insulin dependent childhood diabetes.

Limited joint mobility (LJM), beginning typically in the fifth finger and moving radially, affecting interphalangeal, metacarpal-phalangeal, and large joints, is the earliest clinically apparent complication of diabetes in childhood and adolescence. It is painless and not disabling. Approximately 50% of post-adolescent patients with more than 5 years duration of diabetes are affected, with age being more important than duration of diabetes, as is the case with other complications. Growth failure is more frequent in the presence of LJM, although correlations with diabetic control have not been

Distal Interphalangeal Joint Fractures of the Hand.

Fingertip fractures are some of the most common traumas encountered by hand surgeons. The distal interphalangeal joint is frequently involved and encompasses a spectrum of injury that can require simple splinting to open reduction and internal fixation procedures. Fractures can be classified into those that involve mainly dorsal or mainly volar articular fragments versus those that involve a combination of the two with comminution. Fractures can be either closed or open, associated with joint instability and/or involve inserting tendon disruption. Anatomic reduction of the articular surface is

A study of hyperelastic models for predicting the mechanical behavior of extensor apparatus.

In this research, the nonlinear elastic behavior of human extensor apparatus was investigated. To this goal, firstly the best material parameters of hyperelastic strain energy density functions consisting of the Mooney-Rivlin, Ogden, invariants, and general exponential models were derived for the simple tension experimental data. Due to the significance of stress response in other deformation modes of nonlinear models, the calculated parameters were used to study the pure shear and balance biaxial tension behavior of the extensor apparatus. The results indicated that the Mooney-Rivlin model pr
