An immature female striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) found dead on a northwestern Florida beach in 1988 exhibited severe inflammation bilaterally in the dorsal and mid-thalamus in association with adult trematodes (Nasitrema sp.) and trematode eggs. Numerous specimens of Nasitrema sp. also were present in the pterygoid sinuses. Pneumonia in association with a heavy growth of Vibrio damsela was observed also. This report confirms the occurrence of Nasitrema sp.-associated encephalitis in striped dolphins and in small cetaceans from the Gulf of Mexico.

One hundred fifty-five patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the pyriform sinus were treated with curative intent at the University of Florida between 1962 and 1984. All patients were staged according to the AJCC staging system and had a minimum 2-year follow-up; 84% had at least 5 years of follow-up. The locoregional control rates, the incidence of treatment-related complications, and survival rates are presented for radiotherapy as well as for surgery, with or without adjuvant irradiation.

Cercopithifilaria bainae is a filarioid nematode of dogs shown to use Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l.), the brown dog tick, as the vector. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of Bartonella species and Rickettsia species DNA in the blood, oral cavity, skin and claw beds of feral cats without evidence of skin disease that were housed in Alabama (n = 24), Florida (n = 27) and Colorado (n = 32).
