Understanding problematic eating in out-of-home care: The role of attachment and emotion regulation.

Children living in Out-of-Home Care (OoHC) are thought to be especially vulnerable to developing problematic eating behaviours due to their likelihood of having insecure attachment styles and emotion regulation deficits. Despite this increased risk, our understanding of problematic eating among children in OoHC is limited. Therefore, this study aimed to; (1) Explore the rate of problematic eating behaviours among children living in OoHC, specifically residential and foster care; (2) Investigate how carers manage problematic eating and (3) Understand carers' perceptions of the role of attachmen

Dietary behaviour, food and nutrient intake of women do not change during pregnancy in Southern Ethiopia.

Although pregnant women are required to increase food and nutrient intake to accommodate for the increased nutritional demands, information on dietary behaviour and nutrient intake is limited. This study aimed to identify the adequacy and differences in intake between pregnant and non-pregnant women in a rural community of Butajira district, Southern Ethiopia. Simple random sampling was used to recruit 159 pregnant and 164 non-pregnant women. An interactive multiple pass 24-h recall survey was used to evaluate the food and nutrient intake of the study participants. Except for iron, vitamin A a

Ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption and diet quality among Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participating adults.

Ultra-processed food (UPF) intake is linked to poor health, though some subgroups may offer affordable, nutritious options. Few studies have examined how UPF consumption-overall and by subgroup-relates to diet quality among populations with low income. We evaluated UPF subgroup intake and associations with diet quality among adults participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Rhode Island (RI) and Connecticut (CT) participants (n = 1244, 92% female, 58% food insecure) completed an online sociodemographic survey and food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). We categorized fo

Intergenerational trauma: A silent contributor to mental health deterioration in Afghanistan.

Multiple theories, including family systems, epigenetics, attachments, and many others, have proposed mechanisms for trauma transmission from generation to generation. Intergenerational trauma is today one of the most important psychosocial issues affecting Afghans' mental health and psychology, with the potential to affect subsequent generations. A variety of factors have impacted the mental health of the Afghan population over the years, including years of conflict, socioeconomic instability, natural disasters, chronic drought conditions, economic turmoil, and food insecurity, all of which h…

Considerations for the Design of Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Interventions for Women: Lessons Learned from the Implementation of a Novel PrEP Intervention.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake among women in the United States has been low. To increase uptake, we developed a peer outreach and navigation PrEP intervention. Semi-structured qualitative interviews with 32 cisgender women and 3 transgender women were conducted to assess the intervention. We used a thematic approach to identify barriers to, and facilitators of the intervention. Facilitators included interest in PrEP, offer of health and social services, the intervention's women-focused approach, and peer outreach and navigation. Barriers were perceived HIV risk, concerns about medicat

Domestic and intimate partner violence among pregnant women in a low resource setting in South Africa: a facility-based, mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Rates of violence against women are reported to be highest in Africa compared to other continents. We aimed to determine associa … ing of the risk profile for IPV amongst pregnant women in low-income settings. Adversity, including food insecurity and mental ill-health are closely associated with IPV during the antenatal period. Advocates against violence against pregnant women are advised to consider that violence in the home may be perpetrated by non-intimate partners and may by enabled by …

Virtual screening and in vitro activity of potential insecticidal agents from natural products.

Insecticides research must explore alternative pathways to identify small compounds that satisfy the needs of farmers in both developing and developed countries. Reducing the cost of these inputs is essential to increasing agricultural production and mitigating food insecurity. In this study, a multi-stage computational screening of 407615 natural products were conducted, utilizing filters for volatility (MW < 350Da), Protein-Ligand Interaction Fingerprint (PLIF) similarity to a tacrine reference, and a commercial cost threshold of less than 8USD/g. Out of 16 finalists evaluated in vitro, two …

Economic shocks predict increases in child wasting prevalence.

In low and middle income countries macroeconomic volatility is common, and severe negative economic shocks can substantially increase poverty and food insecurity. Less well understood are the implications of these contractions for child acute malnutrition (wasting), a major risk factor for under-5 mortality. This study explores the nutritional impacts of economic growth shocks over 1990-2018 by linking wasting outcomes collected for 1.256 million children from 52 countries to lagged annual changes in economic growth. Estimates suggest that a 10% annual decline in national income increases mode…

Combating vaccine hesitancy and other 21st century social determinants in the global fight against measles.

The year 2019 marked the return of measles after almost two decades of unprecedented successes in global vaccination programs. Measles transmission due to sharp declines in measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination coverage is now widespread among nations that previously saw impressive public health gains including Philippines, DR Congo, Madagascar, Samoa, many in Europe, and the United States and Venezuela in the Americas. Key determinants include the interruption of vaccine health systems due to war, conflict, and political instability; food insecurity and urbanization; and an increasingly glo…

Depression, Executive Dysfunction, and Prior Economic and Social Vulnerability Associations in Incarcerated African American Men.

Low executive function (EF) and depression are each determinants of health. This study examined the synergy between deficits in EF (impaired cognitive flexibility; >75th percentile on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test perseverative error score) and depressive symptoms (modified Centers for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression) and preincarceration well-being among incarcerated African American men ( N = 189). In adjusted analyses, having impaired EF and depression was strongly associated with pre-incarceration food insecurity (odds ratio [ OR] = 3.81, 95% confidence interval [CI] = [1.35, 10.77]), h…

An assessment of the regional and national socio-economic impacts of the 2007 Rift Valley fever outbreak in Kenya.

Although Rift Valley fever (RVF) has significant impacts on human health and livestock production, it can also induce significant (and often overlooked) economic losses among various stakeholders in the marketing chain. This work assesses and quantifies the multi-dimensional socio-economic impacts of the 2007 RVF outbreak in Kenya based on a rapid assessment of livestock value chains in the northeast part of the country and a national macroeconomic analysis. Although study results show negative impacts among producers in terms of food insecurity and reductions in income, we also found signific…

Protocol paper for healthy ageing for Indigenous communities in India and Sweden with focus on nutritious and culturally adequate food provision.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF STUDY: The elderly care regime for Indigenous peoples differs between India and Sweden. In India, the family cares for the elderly, while the responsibility in Sweden lies with the authorities. Food insecurity is the main problem in India, while lack of culturally adapted food is a problem in Sweden. In both cases, little knowledge exists on the importance of traditional food in Indigenous elderly care. By examining the use and significance of traditional food in elderly care for the Mal Paharia people in India and the Sami in Sweden, we focus on the following questio…
