BACKGROUND: Higher education students increasingly consume ultra-processed foods (UPFs) because they are affordable, convenient, and heavily marketed, and this pattern has been linked to adverse health outcomes. Beyond health risks, emerging evidence suggests UPFs may elicit addictive-like eating behaviors. To better understand which foods are perceived as most addictive, we applied a Best-Worst Scaling (BWS) approach-a stated-preference method-to quantify the relative perceived addictiveness of foods varying in level of processing.
METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted betwe

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath changed numerous social and economic environments. Food insecurity rates rose with potential negative ramifications for infant feeding methods. The relationship between food insecurity and infant feeding practices since the onset of the pandemic is not yet fully understood. We examined these relationships in a cohort of infants born during the onset and aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of infants enrolled from birth into the COVID-19 Mother-Baby Outcomes (COMBO) study and bo

Decreased food intake and poor nutritional status are key clinical features of substance use disorders (SUD). Recent evidence suggests a sex-linked role for the corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) system in the effects of substances of abuse. However, CRF role in substance-induced impairment of eating behaviour is poorly understood. CRF signalling is transmitted by two receptor types, named CRF1 and CRF2. The present studies examined the influence of sex and the role for the CRF1 receptor in opiate-induced loss of motivation to eat. For this purpose, female and male mice were trained to acqui

The population of adolescent girls in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is projected to reach approximately 160 million by 2030, with nearly one-third expected to transition into motherhood. Despite this, there persists a significant knowledge gap regarding the dynamics of food insecurity among adolescent mothers in a region that bears nearly 10% of the global burden of food insecurity. Marginalized adolescent mothers in resource-constrained settings experience heightened vulnerability to food insecurity due to structural disadvantages that reinforce intergenerational cycles of deprivation and impede p

Here we review recent advances that identify a role for the central ghrelin signalling system in reward from both natural rewards (such as food) and artificial rewards (that include alcohol and drugs of abuse). Whereas ghrelin emerged as a stomach-derived hormone involved in energy balance, hunger and meal initiation via hypothalamic circuits, it now seems clear that it also has a role in motivated reward-driven behaviours via activation of the so-called "cholinergic-dopaminergic reward link". This reward link comprises a dopamine projection from the ventral tegmental area (VTA) to the nucleus

AIMS: Fat preference is mediated by fatty acid receptors in the oral, intestinal, and central nervous systems, but their central nervous system roles remain unclear. Here, we investigated how GPR40, a medium- and long-chain fatty acid receptor, regulates fat preference via agouti-related peptide (AgRP) neurons in the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARC).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: AgRP neuron-specific Gpr40 knockout mice were generated to investigate the role of GPR40 in dietary fat preference. Behavioral tests were conducted to assess dietary preferences, and metabolic analyses were performed afte

Miracle fruit (MF) has emerged as a promising option for healthy noncaloric sweeteners due to its sour-to-sweet taste-modifying effects and high antioxidant activity. We aimed to examine the feasibility and acceptability of using MF as a weight-loss strategy for individuals with diabetes or prediabetes. Fifty Korean-American men and women (25 participants each) aged 45-75 years with diabetes or prediabetes were recruited in this study. They participated in a randomized placebo-controlled crossover trial where they took the assigned tablet (either an MF tablet or a placebo-sugar candy) 10 min b

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a painful condition characterized by excruciating facial pain, which has a serious impact on quality of life. Depression and anxiety have been commonly associated with TN, but clinical studies report that these comorbidities are frequently underdiagnosed and undertreated in TN patients. Herein it was investigated if rats submitted to the infraorbital nerve constriction (CION), a model of trigeminal neuropathic pain, would display anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors in addition to the facial sensory changes in different time points after the nerve injury. α-Melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), is a hypothalamic neuropeptide signaling satiation, but it is not known if α-MSH may stimulate dopamine release in a feeding control brain region of the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA), during the anticipatory and consummatory phases of feeding behavior. To address these questions, dynamics of dopamine release were measured in 15 min microdialysis samples simultaneously from the LHA and the nucleus accumbens (NAc) during consecutive exposure and provision of food and 1% sucrose in Wistar rats after overnight food deprivation. α-MSH was infused via the

OBJECTIVES: To explore psychosocial correlates of picky eating in adults, document differences in the taste sensitivity of picky and non-picky eating adults, and examine behavioral characteristics of this understudied phenomenon.
METHODS: In Study One, 489 participants completed a survey on food choice and habits, including questions that asked participants to self-identify as picky eaters. Picky and non-picky eaters were compared on their rates of endorsement of a range of food selection behaviors and attitudes. In Study Two, participants who identified as either picky or non-picky responded

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) children are more impulsive towards a sweet reward and have altered feeding behavior in adulthood. We hypothesized that early life inhibitory control predicts feeding behaviors later on in childhood, and the consumption of n-3 PUFAs during infancy may protect IUGR children from developing problematic feeding behaviors. 156 children had information on the Early Childhood Behavior Questionnaire (ECBQ) at 18 months, Food Frequency Questionnaire at 48 months and Children׳s Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ) at 72 months. There was a significant negative cor

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common and important cause of morbidity, and results in a significant economic burden. Recent human studies have demonstrated that that depression is contagious, and depression in family and friends might cumulatively increase the likelihood that a person will exhibit depressive behaviors. The mechanisms underlying contagion depression are poorly understood, and there are currently no animal models for this condition.
METHODS: Rats were divided into 3 groups: depression group, contagion group, and control group. After induction of depression by 5 weeks of chronic u

The present study investigated whether the familiarity with and affective responses to foods are predicted by the individual trait food neophobia and by parental education in school children. The cross-sectional data collection involved children (N=208, 8- and 11-year-old) from Helsinki, and their parents. A questionnaire assessing children's food neophobia with Food Neophobia Scale (FNS), and familiarity with and affective responses to 36 foods was completed by parents. Children with low FNS were familiar with a larger number of foods than those with high FNS. High FNS was associated with low

BACKGROUND: There has been a dramatic escalation in sugar intake in the last few decades, most strikingly observed in the adolescent population. Sugar overconsumption has been associated with several adverse health consequences, including obesity and diabetes. Very little is known, however, about the impact of sugar overconsumption on mental health in general, and on reward-related behavioral disorders in particular. This study examined in rats the effects of unlimited access to sucrose during adolescence on the motivation for natural and pharmacological rewards in adulthood.
