PURPOSE: We aimed to analyse short and long-term complications of polyurethane (PU) versus silicone catheters used in totally implantable venous-access ports (TIVAPs) implanted at the forearm.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 698 consecutively implanted TIVAPs was performed. Primary end-points were defined as rates of major complications associated with either type of central venous port catheter. Technical success rate, device service interval as well as minor complications not requiring port explantation were defined as secondary end-points.

INTRODUCTION: Displaced paediatric forearm fractures are most often treated by manipulation under anaesthetic, followed by the application of a circumferential Plaster of Paris (POP) splint. Some surgeons choose to split the cast in order to facilitate immediate "spreading" with minimal distress to the patient, should the distal limb become compromised. Usually however, this does not occur, and the cast is completed at a later visit to the plaster room. Prefabricated composite free flaps for complex airway reconstruction have been described for an adult series at our institution. We extended this approach to a pediatric patient with lifelong subglottic stenosis who had failed previous open airway reconstructions. BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to compare the rate of complications between buried and exposed intramedullary implants after fixation of pediatric forearm fractures.
METHODS: A retrospective comparative cohort study of 339 children treated with intramedullary fixation for displaced forearm fractures between 2004 and 2009 was performed. Implants were left exposed in 128 patients (37.8%) and buried beneath the skin in 208 patients (61.4%); 3 patients had buried and exposed hardware (0.9%). PURPOSE: To study the benefit of using the perforator-based radial forearm fascial flap for patients with recurrent carpal tunnel syndrome.

Reconstruction of soft-tissue defects on multiple fingers is challenging because the number of recipient vessels for free flaps is limited. We report the use of a free radial forearm flap with multiple perforator-based skin islands for the reconstruction of complex soft-tissue defects involving multiple fingers. The injuries were caused by a heat press. The flap was transferred, like "bunting," to the injured hand with an exteriorized pedicle. The technique presented here is advantageous because it simultaneously covers multiple defects and allows immediate hand therapy after the operation.

BACKGROUND: Forearm artery lesions are a frequent cause of distal fistula maturation failure. Surgical treatment is difficult because of highly calcified arteries. To redo the arteriovenous anastomosis higher up the forearm is technically difficult and often ineffective because arteries cannot be enlarged. It also causes a loss in puncture zone.
