A 54-year-old female patient complained of right upper quadrant abdominal pain 11 years following a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. A CT scan demonstrated a collection in the surgical bed and a surgical clip in the proximal bile duct. Cholangitis developed a few days later. Another CT showed that the surgical clip migrated to the distal common bile duct. The clip was removed by endoscopic retrograde cholangiography and the cholangitis was resolved.

With the broad indications for dental implantation, complications rates have increased. Dental implant displacement into the maxillary sinus, although rare, can occur during the restoration of maxillary posterior teeth. We performed a 6-year retrospective review and found 3 cases with displaced implants in the maxillary sinus. Detailed information, including surgical indications and dental implant removal methods, is provided. Dental implants can be dislocated to the maxillary sinus perioperatively or postoperatively. Endoscopic sinus surgery can be performed to remove the implant and restore

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a relatively safe therapy for the treatment of pain but has the potential for several complications, including lead migration and breakage. While instances of lead breakage and electrode shearing have been described, there are no reported cases of stimulator lead transection and migration to the foramen magnum.
AIMS: We describe the case of a 53-year-old woman who reported that her cervical spinal cord stimulator was no longer functioning after a traumatic fall.
CASE: Fluoroscopy of the neck revealed that one of the MRI conditional leads had migra

Central venous catheter placement especially the femoral venous catheter is a common practice in critically ill patients. Awareness of potential complications of the guidewire such as guidewire migration is of utmost importance. Though potentially retrievable by a vascular surgeon or interventional radiologist if it occurs, close supervision by a senior person during passage by a junior or inexperienced person, the use of ultrasound before and after placement of catheter, and use of a checklist may help to identify and prevent its occurrence. We present a very rare complication of central veno

In most situations, central catheters are implanted in the right jugular vein as initial access for hemodialysis. However, after repeated punctures, the proximal vessels become stenosed and thrombosed and misplacement is likely to occur. Correct catheter position in the vein can be easily ascertained with X-ray or cross-sectional CT imaging. In this report, we describe the case of a 77-year-old patient on chronic hemodialysis via catheter due to arteriovenous fistula dysfunction. We placed a cuffed-tunneled hemodialysis catheter in the left internal jugular vein. Malpositioning of the catheter

A 6-month-old boy presented with painless right hemiscrotal swelling. The scrotal ultrasound revealed a cerebrospinal fluid hydrocele caused by the migration of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) catheter tip into the right hemiscrotum and associated undescended left testis. Earlier, he underwent a VPS placement for hydrocephalus secondary to neonatal bacterial meningitis and ventriculitis. The patient was treated with bilateral herniotomy, left-sided orchidopexy and repositioning of VPS into the peritoneal cavity.

A 70-year-old woman presented to our emergency department with recurrent episodes of left lower quadrant pain. She subsequently underwent high anterior resection with working diagnosis of acute diverticulitis, but intraoperatively was found to have perforated sigmoid diverticulum due to toothpick impaction. A high index of suspicion is required for diagnosis of toothpick ingestion. Appropriate preoperative investigations such as endoscopy and CT, despite their fairly low sensitivity, should be performed to increase the ability to accurately diagnose this condition and therefore optimise subseq

BACKGROUND: Even though internal fixation has expanded the indications for cervical spine surgery, it carries the risks of fracture or migration, with associated potential life threatening complications. Removal of metal work from the cervical spine is required in case of failure of internal fixation, but it can become challenging, especially when a great amount of scar tissue is present because of previous surgery and radiotherapy.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 16 year old competitive basketball athlete who underwent a combined anterior and posterior approach for resection of an osteosarcom

Displacement of dental implants into the maxillary sinus is a rare complication. This article presents a case of displaced dental implant into maxillary sinus. Retrieval of the dental implant from left maxillary sinus was performed via endoscopic sinus surgery. This case highlighted a delayed referral of a 53-year-old male by a general dental practitioner for management of a dislodged dental implant into the left maxillary antrum. The implant was dislodged during placement of a healing abutment 4 months after implant insertion to replace missing 25. Cone beam computerized tomography revealed t

Tracheostomy tube fracture and aspiration into the tracheobronchial tree leading to airway obstruction is a dangerous complication after tracheostomy. We report a case of a fractured tracheostomy tube in a 6-year-old child who had been maintained on a tracheostomy tube for the past 5 years. The tracheostomy tube got fractured at the junction of the tube and neck plate, and impacted in the trachea and right main bronchus. Rigid bronchoscopy performed through the tracheostomy stoma to retrieve the fractured tracheostomy tube and the anaesthetic management during the period are discussed.

The authors report a complication of catheter ablation that, to their knowledge, has never been previously reported. A 63-year-old man had undergone successful transvenous catheter thermoablation for atrial fibrillation. The patient remained well until 3 days prior to further admission when he noticed itching in the right frontal area of his scalp. On palpating his scalp, he discovered a metallic body projecting out of it and he proceeded to extract 20 cm of wire from his head. The following day a progressive left hemiplegia developed, and the patient experienced a deteriorating level of consc

We experienced ileal perforation caused by dislocated biliary endoprosthesis in 59 years old female patient. The endoprosthesis was implanted due to biliary fistula after laparoscopic cholecystectomy 2 years before the perforation. It seems that endoprosthesis dislocation and the perforation were the result of too long stay of endoprosthesis. After the surgical management and the removal of the prosthesis patient was cured. Although ileal perforation caused by dislocated biliary endoprosthesis is rare, clinicians should be aware of the possibility of its occurrence.

A 54-year-old male presented to the vascular service for an urgent inpatient consultation. During an infusaport removal, the catheter was accidentally disconnected and lost intravascularly within the left subclavian vein, with the tip still in the right ventricle. We report on a novel technique for removing such intravascular foreign bodies (FBs), which will add a valuable technical option to our existing armamentarium regarding intracorporeal FB removal.

A 2 yr old female English setter dog was admitted for acute dyspnea. The dog underwent treatment of a T9T10 thoracic vertebral fracture subluxation at the authors' institution 15 mo earlier. Upon admission, a chest X-ray revealed a pneumothorax and a metallic foreign body in the left hemithorax. An emergency video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery was successfully performed to remove a 4.6-mm long Kirschner wire that migrated from the thoracic vertebral column to the thoracic cavity. The operating time was 27 min. The dog made an uneventful recovery and was discharged on the third day after surge
