BACKGROUND: Following concussion, adolescents may experience both poor inhibitory control and increased depressive symptoms. fMRI research suggests that adolescents with major depressive disorder have abnormal physiological responses in the frontostriatal pathway, and exhibit poorer inhibitory control in the presence of negatively-aroused images. The scarcity of information surrounding depression following concussion in adolescents makes it difficult to identify patients at risk of depression after injury. This is the first study to examine neural activity patterns in adolescents with post-con

OBJECTIVE: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies in conduct disorder and in oppositional defiant disorder have shown inconsistencies. The aim of this meta-analysis of fMRI studies in disruptive behavior disorders was to establish the most consistent brain dysfunctions and to address task- and subtype-related heterogeneity.
METHOD: Web-based publication databases were searched to conduct a meta-analysis of all whole-brain fMRI studies of youths with disruptive behavior disorder or conduct problems up to August 2015. Sub-meta-analyses were conducted in functional subdomains of em

BACKGROUND: The hippocampus has been reported to exhibit structural and functional alterations in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). But functional relationships between this area and other regions remain unclear.
METHODS: Region of interest-based correlation analyses were performed in the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data to examine differences in functional connectivity (FC) of the hippocampus between medication-naïve patients with MDD and healthy adults. Correlation analyses were done between clinical variables and the strength of FC in regions showing gr

BACKGROUND: Migraine with depressive symptom (dMIG) constitutes a more severe clinical condition than migraine without depressive symptom (ndMIG), and is likely underpinned by distinct neuropathophysiology. While traditional neuroimaging has linked these clinical differences to static functional connectivity (FC) alterations, the role of dynamic brain network interactions which may more directly reflect the fluctuating nature of symptoms remains poorly understood. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we examined the spatiotemporal brain dynamics from resting-state functional Magnetic Resona

BACKGROUND: Enriched environments support neurodevelopment. The pathways linking enrichment to cognitive processes such as episodic memory among youth remain unclear. This study examined whether brain function and structure in episodic memory-implicated neurocircuitry mediate the relationship between neighborhood enrichment and episodic memory performance.
METHODS: We analyzed data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (n = 9,028) at two timepoints (baseline: 9-11-years-old and two-year follow-up: 11-13-years-old). Neighborhood enrichment was estimated at the child's primary r

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs), particularly Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and Bulimia Nervosa (BN), are complex psychiatric conditions marked by alterations in cognition, emotional regulation, and interoception. Accumulating evidence suggests that these behavioral features are underpinned by structural and functional brain abnormalities.
OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to synthesize recent neuroimaging findings, particularly resting-state functional MRI and functional connectivity studies on cognitive and neural alterations in eating disorders (EDs).
METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines

Developmental stuttering is a speech disfluency disorder characterized by repetitions, prolongations, and blocks of speech. While a number of neuroimaging studies have identified alterations in localized brain activation during speaking in persons with stuttering (PWS), it is unclear whether neuroimaging evidence converges on alterations in structural integrity of white matter and functional connectivity (FC) among multiple regions involved in supporting fluent speech. In the present study, we conducted coordinate-based meta-analyses according to the PRISMA guidelines for available publication

Background. Persons with a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) may exhibit short- and long-term cognitive deficits as well as psychiatric symptoms. These symptoms often reflect functional anomalies in the brain that are not detected by standard neuroimaging. In this context, quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) is more suitable to evaluate non-normative activity in a wide range of clinical settings. Method. We searched the literature using the "Medline" and "Web of Science" online databases. The search was concluded on February 23, 2023, and revised on July 12, 2023. It returned 134

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) exhibits substantial similarities to multiple sclerosis (MS) in clinical manifestations and imaging results and has long been considered a variant of MS. With the advent of a specific biomarker in NMO, known as anti-aquaporin 4, this assumption has changed; however, the differential diagnosis remains challenging and it is still not clear whether a combination of neuroimaging and clinical data could be used to aid clinical decision-making. Computer-aided diagnosis is a rapidly evolving process that holds great promise to facilitate objective differential diagnoses of

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease is strongly linked to neurocognitive deficits in adults and children, but the pathophysiologic processes leading to these deficits remain poorly understood. The NiCK study (Neurocognitive Assessment and Magnetic Resonance Imaging Analysis of Children and Young Adults with Chronic Kidney Disease) seeks to address critical gaps in our understanding of the biological basis for neurologic abnormalities in chronic kidney disease. In this report, we describe the objectives, design, and methods of the NiCK study.
DESIGN/METHODS: The NiCK Study is a cross-sectional

INTRODUCTION: Cortical plasticity is essential for functional recovery after peripheral nervous injury (PNI). Different injury types, from compressive to metabolic neuropathies, lead to distinct patterns of cortical reorganization, calling for a better understanding of the mechanisms and treatment options for each injury type.
METHODS: This review summarizes current evidence from preclinical, neuroimaging, electrophysiological, and clinical studies on the link between cortical plasticity and PNI.
RESULTS: The review describes the key molecular pathways that shape adaptive and maladaptive cor

Inherited metabolic epilepsies (IMEs) represent inherited metabolic disorders in which seizures, various in types and typically intractable, are one of the predominant manifestations and primary determinants of the overall outcome. A metabolic etiology should be suspected in any case of refractory seizures stemming from an undetermined cause. While the occurrence rate of individual IMEs is rare, their cumulative prevalence is high enough to pose a significant clinical challenge. Concurrently with genetic and metabolic tests, neuroimaging is considered part of the first tier of their investigat

What are mental images needed for? A variety of everyday situations calls for us to plan ahead; one of the clever ways our mind prepares and strategizes our next move is through mental simulation. A powerful tool in running these simulations is visual mental imagery, which can be conceived as a way to activate and maintain an internal representation of the to-be-imagined object, giving rise to predictions. Therefore, under normal conditions imagination is primarily an endogenous process, and only more rarely can mental images be activated exogenously, for example, by means of intracerebral sti

Oral contraceptives (OCs) are widely used yet understudied given their potential for public health consequences. Emerging investigations scaling from single-subject, dense-sampling neuroimaging studies to population-level metrics have linked OCs to altered brain structure and function. Modeling the hypogonadal, hypergonadal, or mixed state effects of OCs in terms of their impact on hormone action in the brain is a valuable approach to synthesizing results across neuroimaging studies and comparing OC effects to companion findings from research on menstrual cycle phase effects on brain anatomy a

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is a debilitating condition associated with higher medical costs, increased illness burden, and reduced quality of life compared to non-treatment-resistant major depressive disorder (MDD). The question arises whether TRD can be considered a distinct MDD sub-type based on neurobiological features. To answer this question we conducted a systematic review of neuroimaging studies investigating the neurobiological differences between TRD and non-TRD. Our main findings are that patients with TRD show 1) reduced functional connectivity (FC) within the default mode
