Subjective Verticality Is Disrupted by Astigmatic Visual Distortion in Older People.

PURPOSE: There is little research evidence to explain why older adults have more problems adapting to new spectacles incorporating astigmatic changes than younger adults. We tested the hypothesis that astigmatic lenses oriented obliquely would lead to errors in verticality perception that are greater for older than younger adults. METHODS: Participants included 12 young (mean ± SD age 25.1 ± 5.0 years) and 12 older (70.2 ± 6.3 years) adults with normal vision. Verticality perception was assessed using a computer-based subjective visual vertical (SVV) task, under static and dynamic (in the pre

Arterial phase enhancement of the adrenal glands as a severity indicator for acute pancreatitis.

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between the computed tomography (CT) value of the adrenal glands in the arterial phase of dynamic contrast-enhanced CT and the severity of acute pancreatitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We measured the maximum CT values of the adrenal glands on the arterial phase of dynamic contrast-enhanced CT of patients with acute pancreatitis and compared them with those of the non-pancreatitis group. Moreover, we evaluated the correlations between the adrenal CT values and maximum C-reactive protein (CRPmax) and CRP/albumin ratio (CAR) in the clinical courses. RESULT

Pancreas divisum: evaluation with secretin-enhanced magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography.

BACKGROUND: The clinical significance of pancreas divisum (PD) remains controversial. Secretin-enhanced magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (S-MRCP) is a noninvasive diagnostic procedure that relies on the dynamic response of the main pancreatic duct (MPD) to secretin stimulation. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of PD and to analyze the dynamic changes of the MPD by using S-MRCP in patients referred for suspected pancreatic diseases before ERCP. METHODS: MRCP was obtained before and at 30-second intervals over 10 minutes after secretin stimulation in consecutive p

Impact of ceftazidime/avibactam combined dynamic nutritional support on intestinal barrier function in sepsis patients: A focus on barrier protection mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Studies have confirmed that the progression of sepsis is closely related to intestinal barrier dysfunction, including intestinal mucosa ischemia and hypoxia, flora imbalance and epithelial cell apoptosis. Therefore, protecting the intestinal barrier function has become a key link in the comprehensive treatment of sepsis. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the impact of a novel β-lactamase inhibitor compound preparation (ceftazidime/avibactam) on intestinal barrier function in sepsis patients. METHODS: The study included 108 sepsis patients (January 2022‒August 2025) and grouped the

Does Dynamic Intermaxillary Fixation With Elastics Improve Outcomes Following Unilateral Condylar Fracture?

PURPOSE: The use of rigid versus semi-rigid intermaxillary fixation (IMF) following subcondylar fractures is controversial. This study aims to investigate whether the "dynamic" elastic fixation technique improves the outcomes, compared to the rigid fixation technique for the treatment of displaced subcondylar fractures in adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This nonblinded randomized clinical trial was performed on adult patients with unilateral displaced mandibular subcondylar fractures. Patients were randomly allocated into two groups (n = 17). The primary predictor variable was wire versus elas

Effect of Dynamic Position Changes on Adenoma Detection During Colonoscope Withdrawal: A Randomized Controlled Multicenter Trial.

OBJECTIVES: Adequate luminal distension is essential for improving adenoma detection during colonoscope withdrawal. A few crossover studies have reported that dynamic position changes maximize luminal distension and increase adenoma detection rates (ADR). We designed a multicenter, randomized, parallel-group trial to verify the effect of dynamic position changes on colonic adenoma detection. METHODS: This study was conducted at the six hospitals of the Catholic University of Korea. Patients aged 45-80 years who underwent a colonoscopy for the first time were included. In the position change g

Digital PCR-based quantification of Leishmania infantum in Lutzomyia longipalpis: comparison between promastigote and macrophage-derived amastigote infection models.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) remains a major public health concern in Latin America, particularly in Brazil, where Leishmania infantum is primarily transmitted by the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis. Understanding parasite development within the vector is essential for elucidating transmission dynamics, yet classical microscopic assessments often lack sensitivity for detecting early or low intensity infections. In this study, Lu. longipalpis females were experimentally infected with either promastigote or amastigote forms of Le. infantum and the infection dynamics were evaluated by both optical

Dynamical Analyses Show That Professional Archers Exhibit Tighter, Finer and More Fluid Dynamical Control Than Neophytes.

Quantifying the dynamical features of discrete tasks is essential to understanding athletic performance for many sports that are not repetitive or cyclical. We compared three dynamical features of the (i) bow hand, (ii) drawing hand, and (iii) center of mass during a single bow-draw movement between professional and neophyte archers: dispersion (convex hull volume of their phase portraits), persistence (tendency to continue a trend as per Hurst exponents), and regularity (sample entropy). Although differences in the two groups are expected due to their differences in skill, our results demonst

Evaluating the performance of OCT in assessing static and potential dynamic properties of the retinal ganglion cells and nerve fiber bundles in the living mouse eye.

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases characterized by the thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), which is primarily caused by the progressive death of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Precise monitoring of these changes at a cellular resolution in living eyes is significant for glaucoma research. In this study, we aimed to assess the effectiveness of temporal speckle averaging optical coherence tomography (TSA-OCT) and dynamic OCT (dOCT) in examining the static and potential dynamic properties of RGCs and RNFL in living mouse eyes. We evaluated parameters such as RNFL thickness and pos

Molecular epidemiological surveillance for non-tuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease: a single-center prospective cohort study.

UNLABELLED: Bacterial species cultured from sputum change during treatment or observation for non-tuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease; however, strain-level changes remain unrecognized. Variable number tandem repeat typing is a standard technique for strain identification; nonetheless, its labor-intensive and time-consuming nature limits routine clinical use. Therefore, we aimed to elucidate species-subspecies and strain dynamics in non-tuberculous mycobacteria and develop a simple sequence-based strain-level determination method. We performed a single-center prospective cohort study o
