Sexual histories, partnerships and networks associated with the transmission of gonorrhoea.

We aimed to describe and compare sexual links among people with gonorrhoea, by studying patients in 2 UK departments of genitourinary medicine. Interviews were completed for 510 and 235 cases in London and Sheffield respectively. There was a greater proportion of cases in men, homosexual men, non-white and non-British people and fewer female sex workers in London. Total networks of 1738 people in London and 570 people in Sheffield were described. Large linked heterosexual networks identified in Sheffield were associated with local contact, including men with higher numbers of sexual partners.

Eating disorders and weight concern among lesbians.

OBJECTIVE: This study estimated rates of bulimia nervosa and binge eating, and assessed risk factors among 203 lesbians. METHOD: Participants completed questionnaires containing measures addressing lifestyle, self-esteem, body esteem, attitudes about attractiveness, and disordered eating. RESULTS: The rate of bulimia nervosa among lesbians was similar to that of heterosexual women, but binge eating disorder was more frequent. Eating as negative affect regulation was a more significant predictor of binge eating than body dissatisfaction or dieting. Lesbians were not significantly different fr

The cofactor effect of genital ulcers on the per-exposure risk of HIV transmission in sub-Saharan Africa.

The goal was to estimate the cofactor effect of genital ulcer disease (GUD) on the risk of HIV transmission during a single heterosexual exposure. The relation between the risk ratio observed in an epidemiological study and the per-exposure cofactor effect was investigated. Given simple assumptions, we show that observed risk ratios are expected to be very much smaller than per-exposure cofactor effects and to decrease as the observation period increases. Data from longitudinal studies of female commercial sex workers and men in Nairobi were reanalysed. The data are consistent with GUD cofacto

Inter-relationships between HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases.

The HIV is a typical sexually transmitted disease (STD) agent which depends for its transmission through sex on contact between raw body tissues of infected and uninfected individuals independent of sexual inclination. The dynamics of HIV transmission and its control in a community can be inferred from studying the socio-cultural and epidemiological aspects of acute STD. There is strong evidence to suggest that the main cause of rampant heterosexual transmission of the HIV in sub-Saharan Africa in contrast to the rarer heterosexual HIV transmission in Europe and the USA is the high prevalence

Genital ulcers and transmission of HIV among couples in Zimbabwe.

Seventy-five married men found to be positive for HIV-1 in Harare, Zimbabwe, were interviewed in order to define behaviours associated with acquisition of infection and to determine factors associated with transmission of infection to their wives. The majority of infected men reported sexual intercourse with multiple heterosexual partners and female prostitutes, and gave a history of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). All subjects denied homosexual activity and parenteral drug abuse. Serological testing of the wives of seropositive men showed that 45 (60%) were HIV-antibody-positive. Wives

Clinical implications of lesbian mother studies.

Recent surveys of lesbians have revealed that one-third have been heterosexually married, and one-half of these have had children. Studies comparing lesbian mothers and their children with divorced heterosexual mothers and their children provide data of value to clinicians preparing to evaluate or treat members of this population. Studies show similarities between the two groups in marital history, pregnancy history, child-rearing attitudes, and lifestyle. Motherhood, not sexual orientation, is the most salient factor in both group's identity. Lesbian mothers had more congenial relations with

Serum immunoglobulin elevations in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS): IgG, IgA, IgM, and IgD.

The exact nature of the immune defect in the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is not known. Most studies have focused on abnormal T-cell functions which occur in AIDS. Although polyclonal elevation of serum immunoglobulins is also consistently reported in AIDS, there have been no statistical studies measuring the isotypes (classes) comprising this hypergammaglobulinemia. Quantitative serum immunoglobulin levels of IgG, IgA, IgM, and IgD in patients with AIDS (n = 33) were compared to healthy homosexual (n = 71) and healthy heterosexual (n = 32) controls. Serum IgD levels are increase

Two clinically discrete syndromes of transsexualism.

Transsexuals are defined as subjects who have a sustained feminine gender identity combined with a wish to alter their bodily appearance towards the feminine. The results of this study indicate that they can be differentiated into two clinically discrete groups. In an investigation of 29 transsexuals who sought a change of sex operation it was found that those who had experienced fetishistic arousal were significantly more likely to be older, to have experienced heterosexual intercourse, to be married and to show penile responses to pictures of men and women indicative of a more heterosexual o

Posttraumatic stress symptoms in sexual minority and majority women after difficult births: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Although giving birth is often a positive experience, some individuals may perceive it as traumatic, and may develop birth-related post-traumatic stress disorder (BR-PTSD). Sexual minority women, who may face minority stress during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, could be at an increased risk for BR-PTSD. AIM: To compare BR-PTSD symptoms between sexual minority and heterosexual women, following births that involved complications or were self-perceived as difficult experiences. METHODS: An explorative, small-scale cross-sectional survey was used to explore post-t

Health Professionals' Approaches to Support Patient Diversity in the Assessment of Vaginismus: A Critical Feminist Qualitative Study for Inclusive Care.

Background/Objectives: Current research on vaginismus predominantly represents White cisgendered and heterosexual women of reproductive age. It is unclear how health professionals (HPs) navigate and support the needs of patients with vaginismus who are gender, sexually, ethnically, religiously, age and/or disability diverse. Therefore, this qualitative study explored health professionals' experiences and perceptions of patient diversity to holistically assess and support people with vaginismus. Methods: In 2023-2024, 23 HPs in general practice, uro/gynaecology, pelvic floor physiotherapy, ment

Substance use patterns among sexual minority women: a mini review.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority women (SMW), including lesbian, bisexual, and other non-heterosexual women, experience higher rates of substance use (SU) and substance use disorders (SUDs) than heterosexual women, yet remain relatively underrepresented in the literature. OBJECTIVES: This structured mini-review aimed to synthesize evidence on prevalence patterns, determinants, intersectional influences, treatment barriers, and intervention approaches related to substance use among SMW. METHODS: A structured narrative review of epidemiological studies, reviews, and meta-analyses was undertaken usi

Daily Sexual Objectification As a Proximal Risk Factor for Craving and Alcohol Use After Sexual Assault: An Ecological Momentary Assessment Study.

OBJECTIVE: Women who have experienced sexual assault report higher rates of alcohol use. Sexual objectification experiences, such as sexualized body gazes, gestures, commentary, and physical contact, have been linked with greater alcohol use and may represent a particular stressor for women who have experienced sexual assault, potentially leading to craving and alcohol use to cope. This study used a 3-week ecological momentary assessment design to test whether experiencing sexual objectification indirectly predicted the likelihood of later alcohol use through heightened craving. Further, becau

The association between sexual orientation and psychotic like experiences during adolescence: a prospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: Psychotic like experiences (PLEs) are relatively common during adolescence and associated with a range of negative outcomes. There is evidence that sexual minorities are at increased risk of mental health problems including depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicidality. However, no study has investigated the association between sexual orientation and psychotic experiences during adolescence. We compared trajectories of PLEs in sexual minority and heterosexual adolescents from 12 to 24 years of age. METHODS: We used data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPA

Sexual and gender identities and alcohol use during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This study examined differences in alcohol use by sexual and gender identities during the COVID-19 pandemic, and assessed whether variation between groups was explained by pandemic-related stressors and minority stress. Data from 2,429 partnered adults in the National Couples' Health and Time Use Study (n = 3,593) collected from September 2020 to April 2021 were used to model drinking patterns (frequency, amount, and drinking to cope) by sexual and gender identities, COVID-19 stress and disruption, microaggressions, and supportive climate. Regression models indicated differences in drinking by

Tobacco and Cannabis Co-Use by Sexual Minority Adults in the United States, 2022.

INTRODUCTION: Given the negative health outcomes of tobacco and cannabis co-use, understanding the co-use of tobacco and cannabis is important, particularly regarding those with higher health burdens, such as sexual minority individuals. This study examined the co-use of tobacco and cannabis by sexual identity. METHODS: The adult sample from the 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health was used for this study. A multinomial logistic regression was performed on past-month tobacco and cannabis use (i.e., no use of tobacco and cannabis [reference], tobacco only use, cannabis only use, tobacco

Polysubstance use by sexual identity among US adults, 2021.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding polysubstance use among US sexual minority adults is important to serve as a population-level baseline to promote health equity around substance use prevention and public health strategies. This study quantifies the number of substances used by sexual identity among US adults. METHODS: We used the 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health and included adults (aged ≥18) (unweighted n = 47,291). We conducted multivariable Poisson regression models to examine the number of substances used in the past year (count variable; range: 0-18) by sexual identity ("heterosexual"

Sexual Minority Disparities in Health and Well-Being as a Consequence of the COVID-19 Pandemic Differ by Sexual Identity.

Purpose: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has accentuated long-standing population health disparities in the United States. We examined how the pandemic and its social consequences may differentially impact sexual minority adults, relative to heterosexual adults. Methods: Data are from a U.S. national sample of adults (n = 2996; 18.06%) collected from online panels from April to May 2020. We used eight indicators of well-being-mental health, physical health, quality of life, stress, loneliness, psychological distress, alcohol use, and fatigue-to assess the degree to which sexua
