Gastrointestinal microecology in the critically ill neonate.

The fecal and gastric microflora of 178 critically ill neonates was compared with that of 30 normal full-term infants. Significant findings included increased frequency of single species retrieval and decreased frequency of mixed aerobic-anaerobic fecal cultures in the ill infants. Also noted were increased retrieval of pathogenic organisms, ie, staphylococcus aureus from gastric and fecal cultures of the ill infants, and decreased retrieval rates of Escherichia coli enterococcus, B fragilis, and other anaerobes in the feces of this group. Yeast retrieval was increased in the feces of the ill

Postnatal growth of infants of less than 1.3 kg birth weight: effects of metabolic acidosis, of caloric intake, and of calcium, sodium, and phosphate supplementation.

Weekly increments of length, weight, head circumference, and skinfold thickness in response to a series of dietary changes were measured in 108 healthy infants who weighed less than 1.3 kg at birth. The serial manipulations included prevention of late metabolic acidosis, increased caloric intake, and calcium, sodium, and phosphorus supplementation. The study comprised four phases; the infants were divided into ten groups according to dietary regimen. AGA and SGA infants were studied separately. Growth in length was primarily influenced by a change to a formula providing a higher caloric intake

Nutritional aspects of manganese homeostasis.

Manganese (Mn) is an essential mineral. It is present in virtually all diets at low concentrations. The principal route of intake for Mn is … he essentiality of Mn; (2) the concentration ranges, means and variation of Mn in various foods and infant formulas; (3) the absorption, distribution, and elimination of Mn after oral exposure and (4) the factors that raise a theoretical concern that neonates receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN) are exposed to excessive dietary Mn.

[A comparative study of breast feeding and artificial infant feeding by ultrasonic scanning].

Sucking process was examined in 22 breast- and formula-fed infants by ultrasonic scanning. Analysis of the obtained echographic images of the oral cavity along the middle sagittal line has led the authors to a conclusion that employment of traditional milk soothers with both large and small holes is harmful for articulation and forms an erroneous pattern of sucking and swallowing function, this possibly resulting in abnormal development of the jaws and oral cavity organs.

Evolution of infant nutrition.

Homo sapiens has developed during the course of over two million years. The social and physical conditions of life, the availability of milk … l lactational failure. National and international promulgations strictly control the composition of infant formulas offered as breast-milk substitutes or as weaning foods. These recommendations are modified as beliefs suggest, and research indicates, the effects of nutrients and other factors on the health and well-being of the child. Preliminary observations on …

Brain lipidomics and neurodevelopmental outcomes in intrauterine growth restricted piglets fed dairy or vegetable fat diets.

Breast milk has neurodevelopmental advantages compared to infant formula, especially in low-birth-weight infants, which may in part relate to the fat source. This study compared neurodevelopmental outcomes in three-day-old normal birth weight (NBW) and intrauterine growth restricted (IUGR) piglets fed a formula diet with either vegetable oil (VEG) or bovine milk fat sources (MILK) for three weeks in a 2 × 2 factorial design. Behavioural tests, lipidomics, MRI and RNA sequencing analyses of plasma and brain tissue were conducted. The absolute levels of 82% and 11% of lipid molecules were differ…

Switching Kalman filter based methods for apnea bradycardia detection from ECG signals.

Apnea bradycardia (AB) is an outcome of apnea occurrence in preterm infants and is an observable phenomenon in cardiovascular signals. Early detection of apnea in infants under monitoring is a critical challenge for the early intervention of nurses. In this paper, we introduce two switching Kalman filter (SKF) based methods for AB detection using electrocardiogram (ECG) signal. The first SKF model uses McSharry's ECG dynamical model integrated in two Kalman filter (KF) models trained for normal and AB intervals. Whereas the second SKF model is established by using only the RR sequence extracted

Dietary management of malnourished children with a new enteral feeding.

Balance (nitrogen, fat, carbohydrate) and growth studies were carried out in nine children (6 to 26 months old) recovering from protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) using a concentrated (1 kcal/mL) formula designed specifically for 1- to 6-year-olds. The formula provided 12% of energy as protein (18% whey, 82% casein), 44% of energy as carbohydrate (69% corn syrup solids, 31% sucrose), and 44% of energy as fat (50% high-oleic safflower oil, 30% soy oil, 20% medium-chain triglycerides). Means +/- standard deviations of apparent nitrogen retention and absorption were 90 +/- 3% and 39 +/- 13%, respe

Vitamin A status in premature infants.

BACKGROUND: Premature infants are at risk of vitamin A deficiency due to inadequate transplacental transport, inadequate storage and increased tissue utilization. Previous studies reported a significant decrease in serum vitamin A levels in premature infants at birth compared to those of full term infants. OBJECTIVE: To determine serial changes of plasma vitamin A status during the first month of life in 19 healthy, very low birth weight premature infants. METHOD: Subjects were fed with premature infant formula and received multivitamin supplementation. Plasma vitamin A concentrations were m…

Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome in Children with Down Syndrome: A Pilot Case-Control Study.

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a non-immunoglobin E-mediated food hypersensitivity disorder. However, little is known about the clinical features of FPIES in patients with Down syndrome (DS). Medical records of children with DS diagnosed at our hospital between 2000 and 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Among the 43 children with DS, five (11.6%) were diagnosed with FPIES; all cases were severe. In the FPIES group, the median age at onset and tolerance was 84 days and 37.5 months, respectively. Causative foods were cow's milk formula and wheat. The surgical history of

Measured consumption of tap water in German infants and young children as background for potential health risk assessments: data of the DONALD Study.

Contaminated tap water can become a health risk, e.g. by metals or environmental pollution particularly for sensitive population groups such as infants and young children. There is a lack of data on exactly measured water intake. In the DONALD Study, individual food and fluid intakes were measured by use of 3-day weighed diet records. Here we report on the distribution of individual intakes of tap water in 504 healthy normally nourished subjects aged 3-36 months (1962 diet records) between 1990 and 1998. We calculate scenarios for potential tap water contamination. Tap water intake per kg body

[Characteristics of the fetal and infant respiratory system : What the pediatric anesthetist should know].

Respiratory complications are the most frequent incidents in pediatric anesthesia after cardiac events. The pediatric respiratory physiology and airway anatomy are responsible for the particular respiratory vulnerability in this stage of life. This article explains the aspects of pulmonary embryogenesis relevant for anesthesia and their impact on the respiration of preterm infants and neonates. The respiratory distress syndrome and bronchopulmonary dysplasia are highlighted as well as the predisposition to apnea of preterm infants and neonates. Due to the anatomical characteristics, the low si

[The multifood allergy syndrome].

Multiple food intolerance in infants and young children is increasingly diagnosed. More than 40% of infants less than 1 y.o. could be affected. The syndrome is characterized by the seriousness of atopic dermatitis (SCORAD > 50), by enterocolitis or failure to thrive or various associations of symptoms that may change over time. The evolution is long-lasting. Common food allergens are milk, egg, soy, wheat, but other ones can be implicated. The diagnosis is established by standardized oral challenges. Multiple etiopathogenic factors are involved: atopy, gastro-enteritis induced intestinal hyper

BORIC ACID POISONING: REPORT OF 11 CASES.

Boric acid poisoning in 11 infants, occurring in the newborn nursery as a result of the accidental and inadvertent use of 2.5% boric acid in the preparation of the formulae, is reported. Five of the infants died. All except two exhibited the classical symptomatology of acute boric acid poisoning, namely, diarrhea, vomiting, erythema, exfoliation, desquamation of the skin, and marked central nervous system irritation. Early manifestations of poisoning were nonspecific, and one patient died before skin manifestations were noted. Peritoneal dialysis, instituted in nine cases, was found to be the
