Introduction: Congenital partial duodenal obstruction (CPDO) is a rare type of intestinal obstruction, including webs and stenoses. Treatment has usually been operative by laparoscopy or laparotomy. Some have proposed endoscopic treatment due to a higher surgical risk in patients with CPDO. However, restenosis seems to be frequent after simple balloon dilatation. Material and Methods: We report on a patient with CPDO and complex esophageal atresia in whom we used a gastrojejunal tube to keep the lumen open after endoscopic balloon dilatation over a guidewire. Results: Follow-up endoscopy showe

The estimated incidence of melanoma complicating pregnancy has ranged from 0.1 to 2.8 per 1,000 pregnancies. Here the Authors present a case of a 40-year-old pregnant woman, who was admitted to the Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 26 weeks of gestation, with diagnosis of melanoma and suspected with fetal anomaly, as possible bowel obstruction, and polyhydraminos. The melanoma was asported with a wide local excision under local anesthesia. Histological evaluation revealed melanoma Stage Ib (Clark IV, Breslow thickness 1.2 mm, pT2a). Lymph node sonography of neck, axilla, inguinum, abdome

BACKGROUND: Cardiac anomalies are prevalent in patients with bony spinal anomalies. Prior studies evaluating incidences of bony congenital a … omalies co-occurring with bony vertebral malformations were atrial septal defect (ASD 12.3%), large intestinal atresia (LIA 11.8%), and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA 10.4%). Top congenital cardiac anomalies in vertebral anomaly patients were ASD, PDA, and ventricular septal defect (VSD); all three anomalies co-occur at 6.6% rate in this vertebral anomaly population. …

OBJECTIVES: Neonatal cholestasis is a common cause of jaundice among newborns. Hepatobiliary scintigraphy plays an important role in the diagnosis of neonatal cholestasis by ruling out extrahepatic biliary atresia, which is one of the common causes. Phenobarbitone and ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) have been used to improve the specificity of hepatobiliary scintigraphy in ruling out obstructive causes of neonatal cholestasis syndrome (NCS). The present study was undertaken to compare the utility of phenobarbitone and UDCA in augmenting hepatobiliary scintigraphy in the evaluation of NCS.

A case of colonic atresia (CA) and aganglionosis is presented, which is probably the tenth in the English literature. The boy presented on day 3 of life with delayed passage of meconium, milk intolerance, and progressive abdominal distension. A barium enema study was complicated by barium peritonitis. Emergency peritoneal lavage was done and the intestinal obstruction was relieved by a proximal defunctioning ileostomy; type III CA (Grosfeld classification) was identified. The proximal atretic end was the blind-ending caecum and the distal atretic end commenced in the splenic area as a microcol

When a newborn infant presents with high intestinal atresia, the proximal segment of the bowel is usually grossly distended and atonic. The anastomosis of this segment to the smaller and unused distal segment will usually result in little or no propulsion of contents distally. Many techniques have been employed to correct this problem. A common surgical approach is immediate end-to-end anastomosis, followed by parenteral alimentation until return of normal function. This can take many weeks, and requires special attention to fluid loss and complications associated with parenteral alimentation.…

The sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) is a genetically programmed animal model for biliary atresia, as it loses its bile ducts and gallbladder during metamorphosis. However, in contrast to patients with biliary atresia or other forms of cholestasis who develop progressive disease, the postmetamorphosis lampreys grow normally to adult size. To understand how the adult lamprey thrives without the ability to secrete bile, we examined bile salt homeostasis in larval and adult lampreys. Adult livers were severely cholestatic, with levels of bile salts >1 mM, but no evidence of necrosis, fibrosis, or

PURPOSE: In patients with biliary atresia who had undergone a Kasai operation, treatment of intrahepatic biliary cysts (IBCs), particularly when complicated by cholangitis, is often difficult because the clinical implications and the course of IBCs are unclear. Thus, to determine the best treatment guideline, the morphology of IBCs, the clinical course, and the outcomes of such patients were evaluated.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 44 patients with type III biliary atresia who underwent a Kasai operation from 1977 to 2005 were postoperatively examined for IBC by using ultrasonography and c

Maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MS-AFP) screening has become part of routine obstetric care. Although elevated MS-AFP was originally associated with neural tube defects (NTD), it is also able to detect several fetal anomalies of interest to a pediatric surgeon, ie, ventral abdominal wall defects, intestinal atresias, and sacrococcygeal teratomas. Previously, decreased MS-AFP had only been associated with fetal trisomies, but not surgically correctable lesions. In the present study, we review our recent experience with both elevated and decreased MS-AFP as a marker to detect fetal anomalies o…

Background and Objectives: Congenital duodenal obstruction (CDO) is a very rare anomaly with an incidence of 1 in 5000-10,000 live births. Annular pancreas is one of the reasons for CDO and is defined as the pancreatic tissue encircling the duodenum. The exact cause of annular pancreas remains unclear. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on all prenatally diagnosed cases of CDO, with the diagnoses and ethiology confirmed by surgery after birth from 1 January 2018 to 1 January 2024. The cases suspected of having CDO in their fetuses underwent ultrasound evaluations on a w
