OBJECTIVE: To determine whether group B Streptococcus (GBS)-colonized pregnant women who report a history of penicillin allergy can safely undergo diagnostic evaluation to rule out or confirm the potential for an IgE-mediated (allergic) reaction to penicillin.
STUDY DESIGN: Over 18 months, all pregnant women with GBS-positive vaginal/rectal cultures and a history of penicillin allergy were referred to the Department of Allergy and Immunology for a history and possible skin testing. Patients who had experienced anaphylaxis were advised to continue avoiding penicillin and were not skin tested.

Patients with birch pollen allergy may suffer from severe anaphylactic reactions after ingestion of foodstuffs containing soya. The reason for this is similarities in protein structure between a major birch pollen allergen (bet v 1) and Gly m 4, a pollen-related protein in soya. A 65-year-old patient allergic to birch pollen developed an adverse systemic reaction after consumption of a soya-containing drink. The diagnosis could be confirmed by in vitro and skin testing methods. Patients who suffer from birch pollen allergy should strictly avoid the intake of soya-containing foodstuffs.

BACKGROUND: Few cases of allergy to pine nuts have been described. We report a case of anaphylactic reaction to pine nuts. The patient needed to be treated in the emergency room due to a systemic reaction immediately after eating pine nuts.

The transfer of cutaneous hypersensitivity was performed in humans, monkeys, and dogs, using the Prausnitz-Küstner (PK) reaction. Quantitative endpoint titrations were used to study reactions resulting from sera from allergic humans, monkeys, and canines. IgE antibody from dogs sensitized human and rhesus monkey skin. IgE antibody from humans and rhesus monkeys did not sensitize canine skin. The Fc receptors on primate mast cells must have broader stoichiometric adaptation for IgE Fc receptors than the analogous Fc receptors on canine mast cells.

The intestinal helminth status of an age-stratified sample (6 to 20 years old) from a Somalian community has been assessed and the typical pattern of highly aggregated parasite distribution found. A reinfection study on a sample of 40 children (treated and untreated with a pentapeptide identical to the active site of the thymic hormone thymopoietin) seemed to indicate that immunological factors play a significant role in modulating the population dynamics of infection in endemic communities.

Airborne fungi in the homes of patients with allergic rhinitis or asthma, from a Toronto Allergy Clinic population, were isolated, quantified and identified to species.
