The Role of Trace Elements in the Formation of Feline Corneal Sequestra.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the trace element composition of feline corneal sequestra (FCS) and provide insights into their pathophysiology. METHODS: FCS samples were collected from 11 eyes of 9 cats following keratectomy and compared with corneal samples from four clinically normal control cats euthanized for reasons unrelated to the study. Excised corneal tissues were immediately frozen at -80°C and analyzed using particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) with a 1.7 MV Pelletron accelerator to determine relative elemental abundance. Trace element levels between groups were compared using Mann-W

Anterior segment optical coherence tomography enables repeat Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty instead of penetrating keratoplasty in a patient with a prominent corneal opacity following DMEK failure: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Persistent corneal edema in eyes with endothelial dysfunction, such as graft failure, may lead to severe corneal opacification obscuring deeper ocular structures. In such cases, penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) has traditionally been preferred over posterior lamellar keratoplasty techniques to remove the edematous and opaque corneal tissue and replace it with a clear full-thickness graft. CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old woman was referred for PKP one year following primary Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) failure in the left eye. As slit-lamp biomicroscopy showed p

Electrical Signal Initiates Kinetic Assembly of Collagen to Construct Optically Transparent and Geometry Customized Artificial Cornea Substitutes.

Corneal transplantation is an effective treatment for reconstructing injured corneas but is very limited due to insufficient donors, which has led to a growing demand for development of artificial corneal substitutes (ACSs). Collagen is a potential building block for ACS fabrication, whereas technically there are limited capabilities to control the collagen assembly for creating highly transparent collagen ACSs. Here, we report an electro-assembly technique to kinetically control collagen assembly on the nanoscale that allows the yielding collagen ACSs with structure determined superior optics

Vector Analysis of Visual Acuity and Refractive Outcomes of Astigmatic Corrections After T-PRK and Fs-LASIK.

INTRODUCTION: T Transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (T-PRK) and femtosecond laser in situ keratomileusis (Fs-LASIK) are reftactive surgery methods for treating myopia and myopic astigmatism. Although T-PRK obtains similar results to Fs-LASIK with spherical myopia, it has differences in astigmatism correction. Vector analysis is a perfect tool to see the real difference between these two methods regarding astigmatic refraction and visual acuity. AIM: The aim of the study is to investigate changes in astigmatism and visual acuity following treatment of myopia and myopic astigmatism abov
