Inhibiting effects of nicotinamide on urethane-induced malformations and tumors in mice.

The antipellagratic vitamin, nicotinamide, significantly suppressed urethane-induced malformations, when it was given intraperitoneally to pregnant JCL:ICR mice immediately after a single subcutaneous injection of urethane (1.0 mg/g) on the 9th day of gestation. The level of inhibition increased with the doses of nicotinamide: 33.0, 55.8, and 70.0% at doses of 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 mg/g, respectively. Polydactyly and tail anomalies were markedly suppressed by the post-treatment with nicotinamide, while cleft palates were less effectively suppressed. Nicotinamide was still effective, when it was gi

[Epidemiology of oral cavity cancers in France].

INTRODUCTION: We had for objective to describe the updated epidemiology of oral cancers in France. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Estimates made from data collected from various French cancer institutions. The distribution by topography, histology, regions, mean age, and specific incidence rates were calculated from the collected data. The survival data was taken from the Francim network studies. RESULTS: Approximately 7000 oral cavity cancers were diagnosed in France in 2005. In 2007, 1746 people died of that cancer. Standardized (world population) incidence rates are respectively, in men and women,

Clinicopathologic characterization of oral angioleiomyomas.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to better define the clinicopathologic features of oral angioleiomyomas. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective search was performed for angioleiomyomas among all smooth muscle tumors accessioned from 1963 to 2001 in an oral pathology service. Twelve lesions met histopathologic criteria for inclusion in the study and were combined with 97 additional cases identified from the English language literature, yielding 109 cases for evaluation. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients with oral angioleiomyomas was 45.0 years, with a 1.43:1 male to female predilection. T

Tumor budding predicts lymph node metastasis in squamous cell carcinoma of the lip.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma of the lip (LSCC) is a relatively rare malignancy. The criteria for performing a neck dissection remain unclear, as reliable predictors for lymph node metastasis (LNM) have not been fully established. This study aimed to identify risk factors for LNM to guide the indication for elective neck dissection. METHODS: A total of 57 patients with LSCC were evaluated based on 81 clinical and pathological parameters, including three previously published pathological grading systems. Statistical analyses focused on identifying the most relevant and independent predic

AI-based Prediction of Neck Metastasis in Early-stage Lip Squamous Cell Carcinoma Using Preoperative Clinical-morphologic Features.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of artificial intelligence (AI)-based large language models (LLMs) for predicting cervical lymph node metastasis (pN+) in early-stage lip squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) using preoperative clinical photographs and basic clinical parameters. This retrospective, single-center study included 14 patients (12 males, 2 females; mean age 59.4) with histopathologically confirmed lip SCC who underwent primary tumor excision and selective neck dissection. Preoperative standardized JPEG photographs were analyzed using 2 LLMs-ChatGPT (GPT-5, OpenAI)

The association between immunoexpression levels of oxidant and antioxidant enzymes and lip squamous cell carcinoma.

The aim of this study was to investigate the associations among the immunoexpression levels of manganese superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and myeloperoxidase (MPO) in lip squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) tissues and the clinicopathological characteristics, and prognostic factors in patients with LSCC. The immunoexpression levels of Mn-SOD, GPx, and MPO were examined in 76 LSCC tissue samples using immunohistochemical staining on tissue microarray slides, and compared to those in normal lip mucosa adjacent to venous lakes (normal controls), normal tissue adjacent to co

The Reality of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 2B Diagnosis: Awareness of Unique Physical Appearance Is Important.

BACKGROUND: Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2B (MEN2B) is an extremely rare syndrome mainly caused by RET918 germline mutations. MEN2B typically causes medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), pheochromocytoma, and unique physical characteristics including mucosal neuroma, distinctive facial appearance, and Marfanoid habitus. Most patients have abdominal symptoms such as bloating, intermittent constipation, and diarrhea. MTC is the most important determinant of mortality in patients with MEN2B. Establishing the diagnosis of MEN2B at a curative stage of MTC is crucial. CASE PRESENTATION: We have e

Squamous cell carcinoma of the lip after allogeneic hemopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Allogeneic hemopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has been considered a curative treatment option for many hematological and non-hematological disorders. Despite the use of advanced methods of tissue typing and new therapies, graft versus host disease (GVHD) remains a major obstacle. Secondary malignancies are also among the most serious long-term complications after HSCT including leukemia, lymphomas, and to a lesser extent, solid tumors. The most commonly observed solid tumor is squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). We report two cases of SCC of the lower lip diagnosed several years after HSC

Submandibular artery: bilobed platysma myocutaneous flap for total lower lip reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Lower lip reconstruction following cancer resection includes a variety of clinical and microsurgical options. OBJECTIVE: We have developed a myocutaneous flap for full thickness reconstruction with a functioning muscle. TECHNIQUE: In all patients, the submandibular artery was outlined using computerized tomographic angiography and Doppler. The flap was designed after resection. The first lobe was designed to fill the defect and was outlined 90° from the defect margin, with the submandibular artery in the center of the flap. A second lobe was then outlined 90° from the first lobe.

Durable complete response to tislelizumab plus cetuximab in a 94-year-old patient with advanced lower lip squamous cell carcinoma: A case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Lip squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a rare subtype of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), accounting for approximately 1 % of all oral malignancies. Unlike other oral SCCs (e.g., tongue or buccal SCC), lip SCC has distinct epidemiological features: it shows a stronger association with chronic sun exposure (especially ultraviolet radiation) and a lower correlation with smoking/alcohol consumption. It is more common in elderly males, and advanced cases with lymph node metastasis are associated with poor prognosis. The treatment of advanced lip SCC in elderly patients is u

CDH1 Mutation Distribution and Type Suggests Genetic Differences between the Etiology of Orofacial Clefting and Gastric Cancer.

Pathogenic variants in CDH1, encoding epithelial cadherin (E-cadherin), have been implicated in hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC), lobular breast cancer, and both syndromic and non-syndromic cleft lip/palate (CL/P). Despite the large number of CDH1 mutations described, the nature of the phenotypic consequence of such mutations is currently not able to be predicted, creating significant challenges for genetic counselling. This study collates the phenotype and molecular data for available CDH1 variants that have been classified, using the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics
