Appropriate nutrient supplementation in celiac disease.

Reduced levels of iron, folate, vitamin B12, vitamin D, zinc, and magnesium are common in untreated celiac disease (CD) patients probably du … D and calcium is recommended. Resolution of mucosal inflammation may not be sufficient to abrogate magnesium deficiency. Since gluten-free cereal products have a lower magnesium content as compared with gluten-containing counterparts, a magnesium-enriched diet should be encouraged in CD patients. In this article we discuss the frequency and clinical relevance of nutr …

Magnesium binding as an explanation of the mode of action of novobiocin.

Novobiocin affects a wide variety of biochemical and biological processes in bacteria, whereas most other antibiotics seem to affect one specific process. All of the processes known to be affected by novobiocin require magnesium ions, and in a number of cases magnesium deficiency mimics the action of the antibiotic. Evidence is presented that novobiocin complexes with magnesium ions.

Burning magnesium, a sparkle in acute inflammation: gleams from experimental models.

Magnesium contributes to the regulation of inflammatory responses. Here, we focus on the role of magnesium in acute inflammation. Although present knowledge is incomplete to delineate an accurate scenario and a schedule of the events occurring under magnesium deficiency, it emerges that low magnesium status favors the induction of acute inflammation by sensitizing sentinel cells to the noxious agent, and then by participating to the orchestration of the vascular and cellular events that characterize the process.

Blood magnesium and the renal magnesium threshold in lichen-fed and fasted reindeer.

In the blood plasma of lichen-fed reindeer the magnesium level was rather low (1.44 +/- 0.17 mg/100 ml) while the levels of calcium, phosphorus and glucose were normal. Fasting for 2--3 days provided no evidence of magnesium deficiency, leading to increments in blood and urinary magnesium. Simultaneous increments in urinary calcium indicated mobilization of bone minerals. The renal magnesium threshold appeared to be at about 1.8 mg of Mg/100 ml of plasma as in other species.

[Audiogenic seizure in the mouse according to strain and sex: the effect of the magnesium ration and neuromediators].

Mice of the DBA/2/M strain are audio-sensitive only for a short period (5 to 10 days). When this period is over, 100 p. 100 audiogenic seizures can be obtained with experimental magnesium deficiency. When AKR/R, OF1 and C57BL/R mice were deprived of magnesium for 15 or 21 days, they manifested an audiogenic attack only when given amphetamine sulfate, caffeine or isonicotinylhydrazine. If they had been deprived for 43 days, it was no longer necessary to administer these substances. The audiogenic attack could be prevented by correcting the deficiency with magnesium chloride or by preliminary ad…

[Magnesium in lung diseases].

Magnesium participates in a number of biochemical reactions that seem to be important when lung function is disturbed. A low intake of magne … thma, increases urinary loss of magnesium. A number of the patients in the intensive care unit have magnesium deficiency. Therefore it appears that some of the lung patients would benefit from treatment with magnesium.

Hypermagnesiuria in children with newly diagnosed insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.

In newly diagnosed insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, the mechanisms underlying the concomitant occurrence of magnesium deficiency and normal blood magnesium concentration are unknown. The renal handling of magnesium was, therefore, studied in 37 children with newly diagnosed insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and in 13 controls. Circulating magnesium levels were similar in patients and controls (0.86 vs. 0.84 mmol/l). However, the urinary excretion of magnesium was significantly higher in patients (90.6 vs. 32.2 mumol/l GFR). In the patients a significant positive correlation was found bet…

[Role of magnesium in the physiopathology and treatment of calcium renal lithiasis].

The inhibitory effect of magnesium on the first stages of renal calcium stone formation is modest in vitro and more pronounced in experimental in vivo studies. Magnesium deficiency has not yet been convincingly demonstrated in man. However, urinary magnesium concentrations are abnormally low in relation to urinary calcium concentrations in more than 25% of patients with kidney stones. A supplementary magnesium intake corrects this abnormality and prevents the recurrence of stones. Magnesium seems to be as effective against stone formation as diuretics. The modalities of magnesium therapy still…

[Magnesium and several metabolic osteopathies].

Magnesium is a constituant of the bone minerals. Changes in its intra-bone distribution have repercussions on the distribution of calcium and on the hormonal regulators of calcium. The importance of magnesium in bone pathology is far from being completely elucidated. Certain factors are now commonly admitted, for example the inhibition of the parathyroid secretion during magnesium deficiency. Others merit more complete and thorough study, it being highly unlikely that the bone is unaffected by changes in the organic magnesium content, given the multiple roles that magnesium plays in the bone. …

Magnesium, potassium and hormonal regulation.

Clinical and experimental data demonstrate that hormonal factors are involved in magnesium regulation. It is possible that the parathyroid hormone could play an important role in the maintenance of normal calcium and magnesium concentrations. The action of other hormones in magnesium metabolism appears to be an indirect response to factors such as calcium concentration or changes in volume. Alterations of the magnesium concentrations are important for the intracellular potassium, sodium and calcium content. Magnesium deficiency appears to lower intracellular potassium and to increase intracell…

Magnesium biology.

Magnesium (Mg2+) is essential for energy metabolism, muscle contraction and neurotransmission. As part of the Mg-ATP complex, it is involved in over 600 enzymatic reactions. Serum Mg2+ levels are tightly regulated between 0.7 and 1.1 mmol/L by interplay of intestinal absorption and renal excretion. In the small intestine, Mg2+ is absorbed paracellularly via claudin-2 and -12. In the colon, transcellular absorption of Mg2+ is facilitated by TRPM6/7 and CNNM4. In the kidney, the proximal tubule reabsorbs only 20% of the filtered Mg2+. The majority of the filtered Mg2+ is reabsorbed in the thick

Symptomatic hypomagnesemia induced by proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs). A known adverse event that is worth recalling.

In 2016, the Sociedad Española de Patología Digestiva published a paper on the adverse effects of PPIs, including a position statement on their safety, with the conclusion that they are uncommon and usually of little importance. Magnesium deficiency was assessed among PPI adverse events.

Hypomagnesemia and hypermagnesemia.

Introduction:Magnesium is an essential element which also has pleiotropic effects in humans. Recent studies have altered our interpretation … of torsades de pointes and preeclampsia irrespective of the presence of preexisting hypomagnesemia. Magnesium deficiency and/or hypomagnesemia has been linked to cardiovascular disease, vascular calcification and endothelial function both in vitro and in vivo. Should magnesium be given to every migraineur? No.

Migraine is one of the most common neurological disorders that affects young people, causing a considerable degree of disability in the active population, with an enormous consequent socio-economic impact. Despite intensive research, the pathomechanism of migraine is not completely understood and its fully effective therapy remains to be achieved. A number of experimental studies have implicated the importance of magnesium ion in the pathophysiology of this condition. Magnesium has been also administered for both prophylactic and acute therapy in migraine, but the question of its efficacy has
