Maxillofacial trauma are common, secondary to road traffic accident, sports injury, falls and require sophisticated radiological imaging to precisely diagnose. A direct surgical reconstruction is complex and require clinical expertise. Bio-modelling helps in reconstructing surface model from 2D contours. In this manuscript we have constructed the 3D surface using 2D Computerized Tomography (CT) scan contours. The fracture part of the cranial vault are reconstructed using GC1 rational cubic Ball curve with three free parameters, later the 2D contours are flipped into 3D with equidistant z compo

Reconstruction of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) for congenital or acquired deformities is a major challenge for maxillofacial surgeons. The alternatives for reconstructing the TMJ include free grafts (costochondral, iliac crest, clavicle, or metatarsus), free flaps (fibula), osteogenic distraction, and alloplastic grafts. The lack of biological knowledge of cartilaginous grafts and their reaction to the environment of the TMJ is largely responsible for the inability to predict growth. This report describes the use of a free flap for TMJ reconstruction.

The given way of reconstruction of posttraumatic injuries showed predicted, long-term results and can be recommended for application in specialized establishments on bases of hospitals. Use of the data of computer tomography during the preoperative and postoperative period allows to estimate the volume of missing bone tissue. It also allows to define the volume of autogenous bone required for completion. Allows to define parameters of thickness, height, degree of curvature of autogenous bone, and also to select the optimum size of titanium plate or mesh. Application of perforated titanium plat

Chondrosarcoma is among the most common primary bone tumors in adults. In the mandible, chondrosarcoma is a very uncommon malignant cartilage-producing tumor. This case report shows how virtual planning combined with other digital technologies may improve masticatory function rehabilitation in patients with enlarged mandibular chondrosarcoma. The present study reports a case of a 52-year-old male patient who was initially diagnosed with a mandible chondroma, which was successfully excised with no evidence of malignant transformation. Nevertheless, the patient's symptoms recurred after 10 years

Mandible subcondylar fractures have very high complication rate, yet there is no consensus on suitable plate design for optimal patient outcomes. Our study is aimed at comparing single mini, trapezoid, lambda, strut and double mini plates. A finite-element (FE) model of intact mandible was developed based on healthy CT-scan data, which was further virtually osteotomized and fixated with plates. The cortical and cancellous bones were assigned region-specific orthotropic and heterogenous isotropic material properties respectively. The models were subjected to six load cases representing the mast

This study aimed to investigate alveolar bone change around mandibular anterior teeth during orthodontic decompensation in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion and different vertical facial patterns. The records of 29 consecutive Class III patients selected from those pending two-jaw orthognathic surgery were divided into low (≤ 28°), average (30°-37°), and high (≥ 39°) mandibular plane angle (MPA) groups. The DICOM files of CBCT scans and STL files of digital dental models, taken before (T1) and after (T2) presurgical orthodontic treatment, were imported into Dolphin imaging software

The purpose of this study was to evaluate experimentally the behaviors of an intact and an implanted cadaveric ramus, to compare and analyze load mechanism transfers between two validated finite element models. The intact, clean cadaveric ramus was instrumented with four rosettes and loaded with the temporal reaction load. Next, the Biomet microfixation implant was fixed to the same cadaveric mandibular ramus after resection. The mandibular ramus was reconstructed from computed tomographic images, and two finite element models were developed. The experimental results for the mandibular ramus p

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The facial artery musculomucosal (FAMM) flap is a good option for covering small and medium-sized defects in the oral cavity because of its similar tissue characteristics and easy implementation.
METHODS: We reviewed our results using this flap between 2006 and 2014. A total of 20 patients were included and 25 FAMM flaps were performed, 16 right (64%) and 9 left (36%) flaps. Five patients had simultaneous bilateral reconstructions. The indications for flap surgery were reconstruction after resection of tumours in the floor of the mouth (8 cases, 40%), tumours in o

PURPOSE: Conventional mandibular reconstruction frequently results in stress shielding, compromised osteotomy site healing, or bone resorption. This study introduces an Embedded Polygonal Bone Reconstruction Structure (EPBRS) that eliminates titanium plate dependency, enhanced through fillet-based topological optimization.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A computational model of the Embedded Polygonal Bone Reconstruction Structure (EPBRS) was developed from CT scans. Four variants with fillet radii (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 mm) were designed. Physiological masticatory loading was simulated under identic…

The fast osteogenesis of the large alveolar fossa and the maintenance of the height of the alveolar ridge after tooth extraction have always been a clinical challenge. Therefore, this work describes the creation of innovative silk fibroin/collagen/hydroxyapatite (SCH) biological scaffolds by 3D printing technology, which are loaded with recombinant human erythropoietin (rh-EPO) for the reconstruction of bone defects. Low-temperature 3D printing can maintain the biological activity of silk fibroin and collagen. The SCH scaffolds showed the ideal water absorption and porosity, being a sustained-

Soleus muscle necrosis is a rare complication following fibula free flap harvest for mandibular reconstruction. This report presents a case of soleus necrosis without compartment syndrome or infection and reviews the blood supply of the soleus muscle in 24 patients. Variations in the vascular anatomy of the soleus muscle, particularly reliance on the peroneal artery, may predispose to this complication. Clinicians should consider soleus muscle necrosis in patients with atypical donor site pain after fibula harvest. Laryngoscope, 135:1083-1085, 2025.

Costochondral grafting (CCG) can be used for the reconstruction of ankylotic, hypoplastic, and resected temporomandibular joint (TMJ) defects. CCGs have previously been considered the gold standard in children due to their growth potential and autogenous origin, but the disadvantages are unpredictable growth and joint ankylosis. This was a retrospective study of all children who received CCGs for TMJ reconstruction from 1985 to 2004, to allow a 10-year follow-up. Fifty-five patients were included in this study, with 74 grafts being placed; their mean age was 7.9±4.2years. Infection-related ank

To investigate the role of a fully digital process in the surgical treatment of mandibular fractures in children. We analyzed a complete dataset from 22 children with mandibular fractures treated with digital surgical assistance. The patient's treatment process included preoperative thin layer CT (Computed Tomography) scanning, computer-aided design (3D reconstruction, virtual reduction, and internal fixation device determination and shaping), and 3D printing (jaw model, bite plate). We used occlusal and shaping plates during surgery to assist in fracture reduction and fixation. During the fol

BACKGROUND: Facial aging is a dynamic process involving the aging of soft-tissue and bony structures. In this study, the authors demonstrate how the facial skeleton changes with age in both male and female subjects and what impact these structural changes may have on overall facial aesthetics.
METHODS: Facial bone computed tomographic scans were obtained from 60 female and 60 male Caucasian subjects. Twenty male and 20 female subjects were placed in three age categories (20 to 40 years, 41 to 64 years, and 65 years and older). Each computed tomographic scan underwent three-dimensional reconst

BACKGROUND: The medial approach for minimally invasive harvesting of a deep circumflex iliac artery (DCIA) flap is described for reconstruction of the jaw. The associated preservation of the crest of the ilium prevents the raising of the abdominal internal oblique muscle (IO) in a standard fashion. However, reconstructive surgery of composite mandibular defects includes bone and soft tissue. To achieve this goal, we combined this technique with a new perforator-based raising of the IO for reconstruction of intraoral soft tissue.
METHODS: In this study, we present eight cases of patients with
