All pregnant women followed during the period 1982-87 were screened for toxoplasmosis, and 35 patients had documented seroconversion or doubtful toxoplasmosis titers. One patient opted for pregnancy termination. The remaining were followed with a protocol that included serial ultrasound examinations and prophylactic antibiotic treatment of the mother and neonate. No fetal abnormalities related to congenital toxoplasmosis were found. We have been using real-time ultrasonographic examination at Srinagarind Hospital since 1988, chiefly for confirming the diagnosis of subluxated and dislocated hips. We have also studied the click sensation, which is usually detected during Barlow and Ortolani tests in normal neonates. This article presents the significance, possible causes, and any correlation of the click sensation with congenital dislocation of the hip resulting from our study using real-time ultrasonography. No demonstrable subluxation or dislocation was found while the click sensation was created during the study.

This paper is an attempt to assess the success of a high risk register for congenital or early onset of severe to profound hearing impairment. With some years experience, and a large number of publications, it is possible to evaluate (at least in part) the extent to which such a register actually does permit us to identify these infants. To that end, an extensive review is reported here and some recommendations are made.

A method is proposed which gives an idea of the type of the absorption spectra of the total porphyrines in the urine without requiring its recording. A single portion of 0,2 ml of urine is mixed with 1,8 ml of IM HCL. The extinctions at 380, 401, 405 and 430 nm are read. The doubled real extinctions (2RE) at 401 and 405 are calculated by the formulae 2RE401--(E380 + E430) and 2E405--(E380 + E430). The extinctions at 380 and 430 outline the "background" of substances which are not porphyrines. When using Spekol 10 the results are multiplied by 1,6 and for Spekol II--they are multiplied by 1,4.

The authors have elaborated a program of selective screening of hereditary metabolic defects (HMD) ensuring the identification of over 100 disease entities as well as a program of the biochemical diagnosis and prophylaxis of mucopolysaccharidoses. More than 3000 patients who applied for help to the medical-genetic consultative centre were examined. Data on the incidence and genogeography of HMD were obtained.

Most practical and cheap techniques other than mass surveys to detect leprosy in urban slums are still not known. The population inhabiting a large somewhat isolated slum in North Bombay was exposed to intensive health education programmes over a period of two years. Leprosy cases reporting as a result of these measures as well as those detected by trained workers casually or through contact examination were registered at two weekly clinics conducted within the slum. The experience is reported of a five-year study of monthly assessment for congenital dislocation of the hip in suspected cases. The importance of persisting instability and of the "tightening adductor phenomenon" is stressed. The results indicate that monthly follow-up for six months greatly diminishes the incidence of late-diagnosed CDH.
