Tremorogenesis by physostigmine is unrelated to acetylcholinesterase inhibition: evidence for serotoninergic involvement.

Studies were performed to bring out a serotoninergic involvement in physostigmine tremor, hitherto known to be working via the cholinergic system. 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) was estimated fluorimetrically after isolation on Sephadex G-10 and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was assayed spectrophotometrically. The dose-dependent tremor was quantified by a double-blind study. No correlation (r = 0.01) existed between tremor and AChE inhibition since the non-tremoring dose of physostigmine caused the same degree of enzyme inhibition. An increase of 5-HT was found to be correlated (r = 0.59) with the d

Occurrence of holoprosencephaly in chromosome 13 disorders cannot be explained by duplication/deficiency of a single locus.

Four cases of holoprosencephaly with duplication/deletion involving chromosome 13 are presented and additional cases are summarized from the literature. When examined as a series, the duplications (trisomy 13, trisomy 13pter----q14) and deletions (deletion 13q12----qter, deletion 13q31----qter, ring 13 with deletion 13q14----qter) exclude deletion or duplication of single chromosome 13 bands as the cause for holoprosencephaly. Increased dosage of the 13pter----q14 region relative to the 13q14----qter region as the cause is also ruled out by the duplication 13q21----qter cases reported in the l

Syndrome of the mesencephalic artery: report of a case with CT and necropsy findings.

The syndrome of the mesencephalic artery refers to the clinical constellation of akinetic mutism and third nerve palsy which results from occlusion of one or more of the posterior thalamo-perforating arteries that arise from the proximal posterior cerebral artery. A patient with this syndrome is described in whom a bilateral paramedian midbrain infarct was shown by computed tomography and confirmed pathologically. To our knowledge, this is only the second reported case of mesencephalic infarct shown by computed tomography and the first in which the CT findings have been corroborated by patholo

Characterization of a reduced-eye mutant of the grasshopper, Melanoplus sanguinipes.

A reduced-eye (re) mutant grasshopper of Melanoplus sanguinipes has been characterized by small flat compound eyes lacking facets, no lateral ocelli and only a remnant of the median ocellus. The re grasshoppers walk, jump, fly and feed in a normal manner, but do not respond to visual and auditory stimuli, suggesting they may be blind and deaf. Extracellular recordings from the ventral nerve cord of re mutants verified the lack of neural activity in response to visual and auditory inputs, yet the mutants detected mechanical and tactile stimuli. Electroretinograms implied that a visual deficit m

Traumatic primary brain stem haemorrhage. A clinical and experimental study.

We report 36 cases of post-traumatic "primary brain stem haemorrhage" visualized by the CT scan and confirmed at autopsy. Clinical experience shows that many technical factors influence the inability to visualize brain stem haemorrhages. Experimental injection of fresh blood into the pons and midbrain of cadavers shows that lesions as small as 0.25 ml in volume may be visualized. The volume and the anatomical configuration of traumatic lesions of the brain stem extended over a rostro-caudal direction, and their proximity to bony structures at the base of the skull are obstacles to the visualiz

A dual effect of sympathetic nerve stimulation on jaw muscle spindles.

In anaesthetized and paralyzed rabbits, electrical stimulation of the cervical sympathetic nerve at physiological frequencies induces in jaw muscle spindle afferents a short-latency decrease or suppression of discharge. This effect is very stereotyped in pattern and is attributed to direct sympathetic innervation of spindles. It is mediated by preganglionic S1-S2 sympathetic fiber groups. A longer-latency facilitatory effect follows, probably vasomotor in origin and mediated by S3-S4 groups. Both responses are eliminated by administration of alpha-adrenergic blocking agents. The latencies, pat

Tumors of the cerebral aqueduct.

Two cases of tumor of the cerebral aqueduct are described. Case 1 is a pilocytic astrocytoma in a 16-year-old girl with a two-year history of intermittent increase of intracranial pressure. The tumor was completely confined within the lumen of the aqueduct. Case 2 is a subependymoma of a 68-year-old man. The tumor extended beyond the aqueduct to the periaqueductal gray matter and produced signs and symptoms suggesting normal pressure hydrocephalus. The literature contains 18 other cases of tumor of the aqueduct: 13 gliomas and five vascular malformations. All, except one, produced clinical man

Noradrenergic mechanisms in brain and peripheral organs after aortic nerve transection.

Noradrenergic mechanisms were studied in the hypothalamus, midbrain, medulla, kidney, duodenum, and skeletal muscle of Wistar rats at 3 or 13 days after either bilateral transection of the aortic depressor nerve (ADN) or a sham operation. The rate of decline of tissue norepinephrine (NE) concentration after inhibition of tyrosine hydroxylase with alpha-methyltyrosine was used as an index of NE turnover. Three days after ADN transection, arterial pressure and heart rate were elevated significantly, and NE turnover was increased in all three brain areas, kidney, and skeletal muscle but not in du

Neuronal increase in various areas of the nervous system of the guppy, Lebistes.

The numbers of 1) dorsal root ganglion cells in the 2nd spinal segment, 2) ventral horn cells in the 2nd spinal segment, 3) Purkinje cells of the cerebellum, and 4) neurons in the nucleus glomerulosus were counted and correlated with age and size in the guppy, Lebistes. The findings were that the neuronal numbers in all these areas increased throughout much of the life of the animal. These data, combined with the previously demonstrated increases in retinal neurons in goldfish and sensory and spinal neurons in stingrays, suggest that neurons are added to many areas of the nervous system of fis

Echolalia: issues and clinical applications.

Echolalic behaviors have been reported within the context of various pathologies but have remained poorly defined. Consequently, it is not easy to determine whether and to what extent normal repetition can be separated from pathological echoing. Hence, it is unclear whether the occurrence of echolalic behavior may be useful for differential diagnostic purposes. Also, much room is left for controversies about the clinical management of echolalic behavior. This article reviews the various conditions associated with echolalia and the role of repetitions in normal language behavior. Suggestions ar

An autoradiographic study of midbrain-diencephalic projections to the inferior olivary nucleus in the opossum (Didelphis virginiana).

Techniques of intra-axonal transport were utlizied to elucidate the organization of diencephalic and midbrain projections to the inferior olivary nucleus of the Virginia opossum. Retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase injected into the olive suggests that terminals within it arise from the subparafascicular nucleus of the caudal thalamus, the nucleus of Darkschewitsch, the fields of Forel, the interstitial nucleus of Cajal, the periaqueductal grey, the caudal pretectal nucleus, the tegmentum dorsomedial to the red nucleus, the red nucleus (minimal), the nucleus linearis, as well as the

[Functional state of the suprasegmental structures of the brain in experimental secondary contracture of the facial muscles].

For the first time the model of secondary contractures of facial nerves was used to study by long-term sterotaxic implanted electrodes the state of the cortex, amygdal complex, reticular formation of the middle brain, reticular nuclei of the pons and nuclei of the facial nerves. The experiments were accomplished on 31 rabbits. The experiments confirmed a close functional connnection of the VII pair of cranial nerves with the limbico-reticular complex. In secondary contracture there were factors facilitating the influence of pons reticular structures on the deficient system the facial nerve--fa

[Surgical treatment of para-stem tumors by a transtentorial approach].

The scope of the interventions and their results, as well as some aspects of the approach are analyzed in 24 cases. Tentoriotomy from the posterior cranial fossa proved technically complicated; its results are unsatisfactory. Somewhat better results were obtained with a combined approach including an incision of the tentorium. The most favourable results were received with the supratentorial approach and incision of the cerebellar tentorium. This method created optimum conditions for a radical excision of some paratentorial tumours of the posterior cranial fossa with minimum mortality.
