Changes in negative attributions during couple therapy for abusive behavior: relations to changes in satisfaction and behavior.

This study examined effects of cognitive-behavioral couple therapy (n = 25 couples) and a variety of systems-oriented couple therapy models (n = 30 couples) in reducing negative attributions and degrees to which decreases in negative attributions were associated with improvements in other aspects of relationship functioning. Couples seeking treatment at a university clinic and experiencing psychological and/or mild-to-moderate physical abuse completed 10 weekly sessions. Attributions, relationship satisfaction, psychological abuse, communication, and negotiation were assessed before and after

Pain and emotional processing in psychological trauma.

Extreme psychological and physical traumas cause dramatic symptom patterns which are insufficiently described by the psychiatric diagnostic criteria of post traumatic stress disorders (PTSD). Additionally, due to the neurobiological proximity and similarity of processing mechanisms of physical and psychological pain stimulation and extremely negative emotions, the patients often suffer from persistent pains even after the somatic healing process is completed. Epidemiological studies confirm the joint occurrence of pain and PTSD. The close relationship and the etiological and behavioral similar

Psychosocial resources and associations between childhood physical abuse and adult well-being.

Childhood physical abuse is often associated with detrimental physical and psychological consequences in adulthood. Yet, some adults appear to overcome effects of very severe parental physical abuse in childhood. This study considered whether psychosocial resources (i.e., emotional and instrumental support, personal control) explain variability in well-being for adults who experienced childhood physical abuse by their parents. Participants included 2,711 adults aged 25-74 years from the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS I) study. Moderation models revealed that high levels of personal contro

The self-regulation of automatic associations and behavioral impulses.

The distinction between automatic processes and controlled processes is a central organizational theme across areas of psychology. However, this dichotomy conceals important differences among qualitatively different processes that independently contribute to ongoing behavior. The Quadruple process model is a multinomial model that provides quantitative estimates of 4 distinct processes in a single task: the likelihood that an automatic response tendency is activated; the likelihood that a contextually appropriate response can be determined; the likelihood that automatic response tendencies are

A fear avoidance model in facial burn body image disturbance.

The quality of life of burn-injured patients can be impaired physically and psychologically. Burn patients who experience facial disfigurement have psychological, social, and economic difficulties living with their appearance in addition to difficulties associated with their medical treatment. The aim of this review was to investigate, within a cognitive behavioural framework, the effect of facial disfigurement on body image and social integration in burn patients. Body image is a complex concept used to express the mental image of a person's physical self. Newell offered a cognitive-behaviour

Psychological and social adaptation trajectories following traumatic fracture surgery - Impact of traditional Chinese medicine mind-body interventions on return-to-work outcomes: A retrospective cohort study.

Traumatic fractures impose a substantial psychological burden beyond physical injury, significantly impacting occupational recovery. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) mind-body interventions offer holistic approaches to addressing biopsychosocial recovery dimensions; however, their effectiveness in facilitating psychological adaptation and return-to-work outcomes remains inadequately characterized. This study aims to evaluate the effects of integrated TCM mind-body interventions on psychological and social adaptation trajectories in post-surgical traumatic fracture patients and their associat

Application of Theory for Those With Sport-Related Concussion: Understanding the Effect of Athletic Identity on Health Outcomes.

Athletic identity is a psychological factor of concern for athletes after sport-related concussion (SRC). The integrated model of response to sport injury includes athletic identity as a psychological factor within its model, but it has often been overlooked as a consideration affecting outcomes of SRC. In this review, we applied the integrated model of response to sport injury to the current available evidence about the negative consequences of a stronger athletic identity on health outcomes after SRC. Theory-based research recommendations will be provided to facilitate research in this area.

Transgenerational Transmission of Violence among Parents of Preschool Children in Croatia.

The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a transgenerational transmission of violence within the family on a sample of parents of preschool children in Croatia, and to identify the factors that increase the likelihood of child abuse. The Child Abuse Questionnaire was self-administered to the sample of 118 parents of preschool children (91 mothers and 27 fathers) during February 2013. There were 7.7% of mothers and 3.8% of fathers who answered that they slapped their child, while 15.4% of the fathers answered that they even hit their child with a fist. We found the subjects who w

The moderation of maternal parenting on the association of trauma, dissociation, and psychosis in depressive inpatients.

BACKGROUND: The effect of dissociation and parenting style on the relationship between psychological trauma and psychotic symptoms has not previously been investigated. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop a moderated mediation model to assess whether the association between psychological trauma and psychotic symptoms is mediated by dissociation and moderated by parental maltreatment. METHODS: Inpatients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar depression (BP) were recruited. Self-reported and clinical rating scales were used to measure the level of dissociation, psychotic

Removing Biases in Communication of Severity Assessments of Intimate Partner Violence: Model Development and Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: To support a victim of violence and establish the correct penalty for the perpetrator, it is crucial to correctly evaluate and communicate the severity of the violence. Recent data have shown these communications to be biased. However, computational language models provide opportunities for automated evaluation of the severity to mitigate the biases. OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether these biases can be removed with computational algorithms trained to measure the severity of violence described. METHODS: In phase 1 (P1), participants (N=71) were instructed to write some text and

Psychological issues in craniofacial care: state of the art.

This article is an extensive review of the psychological literature on cleft lip and palate and other craniofacial anomalies. Issues of parental acceptance, social competence, self-concept, emotional adjustment, and cognitive functioning are examined. Cumulative research suggests that many children with craniofacial conditions develop in a typical manner and do not experience psychological problems. However, a significant number of children (30% to 40% in most studies) experience difficulties with internalizing and/or externalizing problems, learning disorders, and social competence. A multifa

Unpacking leader feedback-seeking behavior: A cost-value perspective on workplace coaching, psychological safety, and Honesty-Humility.

Leaders are encouraged to seek feedback as a pathway to growth, yet not all feedback-seeking reflects genuine developmental intent. Although the cost-value model of feedback-seeking recognizes both informational and image-related motives, little theory explains when, and for whom, each motive dominates leader feedback-seeking behavior (FSB). This conceptual paper addresses that gap by integrating workplace coaching, psychological safety, and the personality trait of Honesty-Humility (HH) within the cost-value model. Workplace coaching is theorized to raise the perceived value of leader FSB thr

Role of depression, anxiety and stress in predicting body image disturbance; the mediating role of shame and guilt in patients with breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. The treatment process can lead to various physical and psychological challenges. Furthermore, breast cancer treatment can evoke a range of emotions due to changes in body image, including feelings of shame and guilt. This study aims to identify how feelings of shame and guilt mediate the impact of psychological distress on body image difficulties through comprehensive model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study, conducted in Tehran, Iran in 2023, recruited 210 breast cancer patients (mean age of 44.50; range 22-75)

How GAI Shapes Travelers' Booking Decisions: The Influence of Source Disclosure and Valence of Creative Reviews.

AI-generated reviews have become a core tool for hotel booking platforms in assisting user decision-making, yet existing research has not systematically explored the emotional tendencies of GAI reviews or the potential mechanisms by which temporal disclosure influences user decisions. This study integrates the Information Adoption Model (IAM) and the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM), incorporates the affordance perspective of GAI, employs a 2 × 2 experimental design (temporal disclosure × review valence), analyzes sample data from 649 travelers, and conducts empirical analysis using Partial

A Bayesian multilevel path model of college students' pickleball participation motivation: Theory-informed priors and hierarchical random intercepts.

Despite explosive global growth of pickleball, motivational processes underlying college student participation remain poorly understood. We present a Bayesian multilevel path model integrating theory-informed priors with hierarchical random intercepts for grade and major. A total of 1992 college students from 12 higher-education institutions across six provinces of China completed validated measures. Using brms (v2.21.0) in R (v4.3.1) with Stan (v2.32), results showed psychological needs as the dominant predictor (β = 0.613, 95% CrI [0.532, 0.692]), followed by environmental factors (β = 0.118

Can a Psychologic Profile Predict Successful Return to Full Duty After a Musculoskeletal Injury?

BACKGROUND: Psychologic variables have been shown to have a strong relationship with recovery from injury and return to work or sports. The extent to which psychologic variables predict successful return to work in military settings is unknown. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: In a population of active duty soldiers, (1) can a psychologic profile determine the risk of injury after return to full duty? (2) Do psychologic profiles differ between soldiers sustaining injuries in the spine (thoracic or lumbar) and those with injuries to the lower extremities? METHODS: Psychologic variables were assessed in so

Adverse childhood experiences, psychological distress, and the role of locus of control.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction, are prevalent and represent a major risk factor for psychological distress in adulthood. Although control-related constructs such as self-efficacy, mastery, and perceived control have been widely examined in this context, the role of locus of control (LoC) remains less well understood. The present study investigated the associations between ACEs, LoC, and psychological distress, and examined whether LoC mediates or moderates the relationship between ACE exposure and psychological distress. Data were draw
