Exposure to environmental stressors such as hypoxia or heat has emerged as an effective strategy to stimulate physiological adaptations, enhance sport/physical performance and promote health. Both environmental stressors activate shared molecular pathways, notably through the stabilisation of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha and the induction of heat shock proteins, which mediate cellular protection and systemic molecular adaptation. However, hypoxia and heat differ in several aspects, including induction modalities, monitoring methods, metrics used to assess physiological strain and substanti

BACKGROUND: Persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) frequently coexists with heart failure (HF), yet HF monitoring remains limited by the need for repeated blood-based biomarkers such as N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP). Advances in wearable electrocardiography (ECG) and artificial intelligence (AI) now allow continuous extraction of digital physiologic signatures that may reflect hemodynamic stress.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of predicting HF progression using wearable ECG-derived features in patients with persistent AF.
METHODS: Fifty patients with persistent AF

The pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, monitoring techniques, and management of elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) are reviewed. The use of barbiturate coma to treat ICP is discussed in detail. Elevated ICP can be associated with severe head injuries and diseases of the central nervous system such as brain tumors and stroke. Symptoms of elevated ICP may be difficult to distinguish from symptoms of other disease states. ICP monitoring techniques such as the intraventricular catheter and the Camino fiber optic system are useful for determination of ICP elevations before any changes in v

Microcirculatory abnormalities may persist after blood pressure, cardiac output, and other systemic hemodynamic targets have been restored in critically ill patients. The sublingual mucosa provides an accessible site for repeated bedside assessment of the microcirculation, but routine clinical implementation remains limited by acquisition artifacts, operator dependence, image-analysis burden, variable measurement quality, and uncertain relationships with therapeutic decision-making. This narrative review aims to examine current methods for bedside sublingual microcirculation monitoring, evalua

Resource-constrained medical sensing devices are increasingly expected to support local intelligence, privacy-preserving collaboration, and secure communication in Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) environments. However, deploying federated learning in ICU monitoring remains challenging because hospital data are often non-IID, model updates may be adversarially poisoned, and emerging quantum-security threats require stronger communication protection. This paper presents a federated TinyML framework with an edge-hosted patient-state Digital Twin layer for ICU monitoring. The Digital Twin compon

Chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, neurological conditions, and kidney disease continue to rise worldwide. These conditions create a growing demand for continuous, non-invasive, and personalized health monitoring technologies. Wearable biosensors meet this need by enabling real-time physiological and biochemical measurements outside traditional clinical settings. Among wearable biosensors, those based on biofluids like sweat, tears, and saliva provide a painless alternative to blood sampling. These fluids also grant access to metabolites, electrolytes, hormones, prote

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a well-established, noninvasive measure of autonomic nervous system activity and is associated with clinical outcomes. Although real-time monitoring of HRV is valuable in clinical practice, its effectiveness is often compromised by major challenges: high inter-individual variability and frequent data contamination from procedural artifacts. To address these challenges, we developed and validated a computational framework for robust and personalized real-time HRV analysis oriented toward clinical application. The framework performs simultaneous analysis and visua

Flexible piezoelectric materials demonstrate broad application potential in wearable health monitoring, human-machine interaction, and biosensing. However, the piezoelectric response of pure PVDF-TrFE is limited and insufficient to meet the requirements for highly sensitive sensing. In this study, ZnO/PVDF-TrFE composite films with varying ZnO doping contents (3-11 wt%) were fabricated and systematically characterized in terms of their structural, thermal, and electrical properties. The results indicate that ZnO significantly promotes the formation of the polar β-phase in PVDF-TrFE, with the m

Optimal depth of sedation in critically ill patients is essential to prevent complications related to oversedation or undersedation. Current best practices aim for a calm, responsive state unless deep sedation is clinically indicated. Tools like the Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale and others provide structured frameworks for assessing sedation and agitation levels. RASS is the most widely used due to its simplicity, reliability, and broad validation. Combining sedation scoring systems with feedback devices such as the Bispectral Index offers a multimodal strategy for sedation management. Thi

Coughing is a symptom of many respiratory diseases. An increased amount of coughs may signal an (upcoming) health issue, while a decreasing amount of coughs may indicate an improved health status. The presence of a cough can be identified by a cough classifier. The cough density fluctuates considerably over the course of a day with a pattern that is highly subject-dependent. This paper provides a case study of cough patterns from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients as determined by a stationary semi-automated cough monitor. It clearly demonstrates the variability of cough den

Monitoring for early symptoms is a critical step in preventing pneumoconiosis. The early signs of pneumoconiosis can be characterized by dyspnea, tachypnea, and cough. While traditional sensor-based methods are promising, they necessitate the wearing of devices and confine human physical movements. On the other hand, camera-based methods have issues related to illumination, obstruction, and privacy. Recently, wireless sensing has attracted a significant amount of research attention. Among wireless signals, acoustic signals possess unique advantages for fine-grained sensing due to their low pro

GOAL: Current methodologies for assessing cerebral compliance using pressure sensor technologies are prone to errors and issues with inter- and intra-observer consistency. RAP, a metric for measuring intracranial compensatory reserve (and therefore compliance), holds promise. It is derived using the moving correlation between intracranial pressure (ICP) and the pulse amplitude of ICP (AMP). RAP remains largely unexplored in cases of moderate to severe acute traumatic neural injury (also known as traumatic brain injury (TBI)). The goal of this work is to explore the general description of (a) R
