Objective Parameters in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Eye and Head Movements.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate eye and head movements, which are objective parameters in ADHD. Method: While the children were watching the course video task, which included the relevant (teacher and smart board) and irrelevant (any regions outside the relevant area) areas of interest, their eye movements were evaluated through eye tracking, and video recordings were made simultaneous. Head position estimation was made using through video recordings. The proportion of total fixation duration on areas of interest (PFDAOI) and saccade count, amplitude, velocity for eye movements, number of tota

Movement disorder Deep brain stimulation Hybridization: Patient and caregiver outcomes.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a well-established surgical treatment for certain movement disorders and involves the implantation of brain electrodes connected to implantable pulse generators (IPGs). As more device manufacturers have entered the market, some IPG technology has been designed to be compatible with brain electrodes from other manufacturers, which has facilitated the hybridization of implant technology. The aim of this study was to assess the benefits of hybridization of non-rechargeable, constant voltage IPGs to rechargeable, constant current IPGs. ME…

A Rare Presentation of Functional Movement Disorder Mimicking Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.

Herein, we describe a 55-year-old female patient with a functional movement disorder (FMD) who presented with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH)-like clinic. The neuroimaging data and positive response to the tap test initially suggested NPH. However, a detailed investigation of the clinic features yielded a final diagnosis of FMD. Via the presentation of this patient, we expand the phenomenology of FMD. To our knowledge, this is the first presentation of a patient with FMD mimicking NPH. Therefore, we think this rare illustration is interesting and may provide valuable perspectives for clini

Assessment of the role of coronoid in restrictive jaw disorders and physiologic mandibular movements.

INTRODUCTION: Restricted mouth opening has major health implications, such as malnutrition, difficulty in speech, and poor oral hygiene resulting in a functional shortage of the masticatory system. Reduced mouth opening can occur due to trismus, as in the oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) condition. Excision of fibrous bands in OSMF leads to reestablishment of the mouth opening. Other than trismus, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis is another common condition that causes fibrosis or bony ankylosis between articular surfaces. Coronoidectomy is a useful procedure that various authors nowadays

A case of prazosin in treatment of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder.

UNLABELLED: Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is characterized by dream-enactment behaviors that emerge during a loss of REM sleep atonia. Untreated RBD carries risks for physical injury from falls or other traumatic events during dream enactment as well as risk of injury to the bed partner. Currently, melatonin and clonazepam are the mainstay pharmacological therapies for RBD. However, therapeutic response to these medications is variable. While older adults are most vulnerable to RBD, they are also particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of benzodiazepines, includ

Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder: Management and Prognostic Counseling.

Management of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) includes reducing injurious dream-enactment behaviors, risk of injury to self and bedpartner, and vivid or disruptive dreams and improving sleep quality and bedpartner sleep disruption. Safety precautions should be reviewed at each visit. Medications to reduce RBD symptoms such as melatonin, clonazepam, pramipexole, and rivastigmine should be considered for most patients. Isolated RBD confers a high lifetime risk of neurodegenerative diseases with a latency often spanning many years. A patient-centered shared decision-making approa

Eye movements and the perceptual span in disordered reading: A comparison of schizophrenia and dyslexia.

Increasing evidence of a common neurodevelopmental etiology between schizophrenia and developmental dyslexia suggests that neurocognitive functions, such as reading, may be similarly disrupted. However, direct comparisons of reading performance in these disorders have yet to be conducted. To address this gap in the literature, we employed a gaze-contingent moving window paradigm to examine sentence-level reading fluency and perceptual span (breadth of parafoveal processing) in adults with schizophrenia (dataset from Whitford et al., 2013) and psychiatrically healthy adults with dyslexia (newly

Risk Factors for Phenoconversion in Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to follow up predictive factors for α-synuclein-related neurodegenerative diseases in a multicenter cohort of idiopathic/isolated rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (iRBD). METHODS: Patients with iRBD from 12 centers underwent a detailed assessment for potential environmental and lifestyle risk factors via a standardized questionnaire at baseline. Patients were then prospectively followed and received assessments for parkinsonism or dementia during follow-up. The cumulative incidence of parkinsonism or dementia was estimated with competing risk ana

Linguistic Abnormalities in Isolated Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Patients with synucleinopathies frequently display language abnormalities. However, whether patients with isolated rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) have prodromal language impairment remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether the linguistic abnormalities in iRBD can serve as potential biomarkers for conversion to synucleinopathy, including the possible effect of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), speaking task, and automation of analysis procedure. METHODS: We enrolled 139 Czech native participants, including 40 iRBD without MCI and 14 iRBD with MCI, compared

Transient involuntary movement disorder after spinal anesthesia: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Spinal anesthesia is commonly used for various surgeries. While many complications occur after induction of spinal anesthesia, i … ad completely disappeared without intervention. CONCLUSION: Anesthesiologists should be aware that movement disorders can occur after spinal anesthesia and be able to identify the cause, such as electrolyte imbalance or epilepsy, since immediate action may be required for treatment. Furthermore, it is crucial to know that involuntary movement that develop following …

Isolated mandibular sleep-related rhythmic movement disorder: A case report.

Background: Rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA) in sleep is usually not considered pathological unless associated with bruxism. On the other hand, so-called sleep-related rhythmic movement disorders (SRRMD) are a recognized category of sleep disorders, which involve prolonged rhythmic activity of large muscle groups, such as the whole body, the head, or a limb, but typically not the masticatory muscles.Clinical Presentation: A polysomnographic description of a patient with symptomatic RMMA without bruxism, fulfilling the diagnostic criteria of an SRRMD, is presented. The symptoms were …

Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder and Neurodegenerative Diseases: An Update.

Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a sleep behavior disorder characterized by abnormal behaviors and loss of muscle atonia during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. RBD is generally considered to be associated with synucleinopathies, such as Parkinson's disease (PD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and multiple system atrophy (MSA), and usually precedes years before the first symptom of these diseases. It is believed that RBD predicts the neurodegeneration in synucleinopathy. However, increasing evidences have shown that RBD is also found in non-synucleinopathy neurodegenerative

How have advances in genetic technology modified movement disorder nosology?

The role of genetics and its technological development have been fundamental in advancing the field of movement disorders, opening the door to precision medicine. Starting from the revolutionary discovery of the locus of the Huntington's disease gene, we review the milestones of genetic discoveries in movement disorders and their impact on clinical practice and research efforts. Before the 1980s, early techniques did not allow the identification of genetic alteration in complex diseases. Further advances increasingly defined a large number of pathogenic genetic alterations. Moreover, these tec…

Movement Disorder in Wilson Disease: Correlation with MRI and Biomarkers of Cell Injury.

To report the phenomenology of movement disorder (MD) in neurological Wilson disease (NWD), and correlate these with MRI, and biomarkers of oxidative stress, excitotoxicity, and inflammation. Eighty-two patients were included, and their phenomenology of MD was categorized. The severity of dystonia was assessed using the Burke-Fahn-Marsden score, and chorea, athetosis, myoclonus, and tremor on a 0-4 scale. The MRI changes were noted. Serum glutamate, cytokines, and oxidative stress markers were measured. Movement disorders were noted in 78/82 (95.1%) patients and included dystonia in 69 (84.1%)…

Joint Consultation by a Neurogeneticist of Movement Disorders and a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist: An Occasion for Subjectivization.

We set out to model a joint therapeutic setting meant to address both medical care and the transferential processes at stake in specialized neurogenetics consultations. Previous authors have explored joint consultation settings with a specialized physician and a psychodynamically oriented psychotherapist, however, few have attempted to provide a model of its transfero-countertransferential dynamics. We aim to do the latter by focusing on a subset of patients to whom such consultations are offered "on the spot." We want to explore situations in which they initially deny the transference's contr
