Understanding the Wellbeing Effects of a Community Music Program for People With Disabilities: A Mixed Methods, Person-Centered Study.

People with disabilities face inequalities in mental wellbeing, for which social exclusion is a contributing factor. Musical activities offer a promising but complex intervention, making impacts on a population with highly varied characteristics and needs challenging to capture. This paper reports on a mixed methods, person-centered study investigating a community music intervention for such a population. Three groups of adult service users with varied disabilities (either physical, learning, or both), took part in weekly music workshops in different locations. Music staff, housing and resourc…

Clinical Practice Protocol of Creative Music Therapy for Preterm Infants and Their Parents in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Creative music therapy for preterm infants and their parents (CMT) has emerged as a promising family-integrated early intervention involving communicative musicality to improve infant development, parental well-being, and bonding. It aims at relaxing and nurturing the infant as well as promoting safety and social interaction for the parent-infant dyad. A music therapist specially trained in CMT hums or sings in an infant-directed, improvised, lullaby style continually adjusting to the individual needs, expressions, and breathing pattern of the preterm infant. Based on the principles of family-…

The effect of music therapy sessions on the interactions between children and their parents and how to measure it, with reference to attachment theory.

Music therapy and attachment is an expanding field and the number of studies addressing the theoretical work is slowly growing. There are both qualitative and quantitative approaches to studying the effect of regular music therapy sessions on parent-child interactions and these cover a range of patient populations including: children at risk of neglect, parents with a trauma history, children coping with bereavement and a large number addressing the disability population, including autism spectrum disorder. These studies suggest that music therapy benefits the parent-child relationship through…

Activation in the Right Inferior Parietal Lobule Reflects the Representation of Musical Structure beyond Simple Pitch Discrimination.

Pitch discrimination tasks typically engage the superior temporal gyrus and the right inferior frontal gyrus. It is currently unclear whether these regions are equally involved in the processing of incongruous notes in melodies, which requires the representation of musical structure (tonality) in addition to pitch discrimination. To this aim, 14 participants completed two tasks while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging, one in which they had to identify a pitch change in a series of non-melodic repeating tones and a second in which they had to identify an incongruous note in a ton…

Feasibility and Safety of Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation Paired with Notched Music Therapy for the Treatment of Chronic Tinnitus.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A recent study demonstrated that tinnitus could be eliminated by vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) paired with notched sounds in a rat tinnitus model. The aims of this clinical study were to investigate the effects and safety of transcutaneous VNS (tVNS) by patch-type electrode paired with notched music for treating chronic tinnitus. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Thirty patients with refractory chronic tinnitus for >12 months were included in this study. A patch-type electrode was attached to the auricular concha of the patient's left ear and tVNS was performed for 30 min (puls…

Effects of Listening to Music versus Environmental Sounds in Passive and Active Situations on Levels of Pain and Fatigue in Fibromyalgia.

In fibromyalgia, pain symptoms such as hyperalgesia and allodynia are associated with fatigue. Mechanisms underlying such symptoms can be modulated by listening to pleasant music. We expected that listening to music, because of its emotional impact, would have a greater modulating effect on the perception of pain and fatigue in patients with fibromyalgia than listening to nonmusical sounds. To investigate this hypothesis, we carried out a 4-week study in which patients with fibromyalgia listened to either preselected musical pieces or environmental sounds when they experienced pain in active (…

Auditory-nerve responses predict pitch attributes related to musical consonance-dissonance for normal and impaired hearing.

Human listeners prefer consonant over dissonant musical intervals and the perceived contrast between these classes is reduced with cochlear hearing loss. Population-level activity of normal and impaired model auditory-nerve (AN) fibers was examined to determine (1) if peripheral auditory neurons exhibit correlates of consonance and dissonance and (2) if the reduced perceptual difference between these qualities observed for hearing-impaired listeners can be explained by impaired AN responses. In addition, acoustical correlates of consonance-dissonance were also explored including periodicity an…

The effect of music versus nonmusic on behavioral signs of distress and self-report of pain in pediatric injection patients.

Receiving vaccinations is a part of growing up; however, as necessary as vaccinations are, many children find them to be frightening and painful. Music has been examined as a potential distraction during pediatric medical procedures, but research findings have been mixed, due, in part, to the fact that children were primarily instructed to merely "listen to the music." The present study sought to determine if a focus of attention activity involving music would affect levels of distress and perceptions of pain in pediatric injection patients. Sixty-four 4- to 6(1/2) -year old children receiving…

"Living turned inside out": the musical expression of psychotic and schizoid experience in talking heads' Remain in light.

The rock album form, advantageously suited for the artistic expression of intrapsychic experience, has been virtually ignored by analytic writers. Remain in Light by Talking Heads is presented as an example of an album that effectively utilizes the potentialities of this form to give powerful and disconcerning musical expression to a variety of psychotic and schizoid experiences, bringing to life the formulations for these phenomena of Bion, Winnicott, Guntrip, Ogden, Grotstein and others. The album suggests a variety of mechanisms by which sound and music may serve both defensive and compensa…

The impact of music upon sleep tendency as measured by the multiple sleep latency test and maintenance of wakefulness test.

Previous work has shown that background noise or music has a small positive impact on performance during sleep deprivation. The current study examined the effect of background music on the ability to fall asleep or remain awake. Twelve normal-sleeping young adults took multiple sleep latency tests (MSLT) and maintenance of wakefulness tests (MWT) after baseline sleep and one night of total sleep deprivation either with background music or under standard (quiet) conditions. It was hypothesized that the music would help maintain wakefulness both under baseline and sleep deprivation conditions. T…

[Dysfunction of Carpentier-Edwards porcine mitral bioprosthesis causing a musical systolic murmur: a report of two cases].

Two patients with disruption of Carpentier-Edwards porcine mitral bioprosthesis presenting with a musical systolic murmur were reported. The two patients noted sudden development of a loud musical murmur 4 (Case 1) and 6.5 (Case 2) years after surgery. Case 1 had associated heart failure. Phonocardiogram disclosed a loud musical systolic murmur with regular vibrations at 230-240 Hz in Case 1, and 250-260 Hz in Case 2. In Case 1, echocardiography demonstrated fine fluttering of the porcine mitral valve at the same frequency as the murmur. Doppler echocardiography revealed characteristic Doppler…

Impact of therapeutic play and music therapy on dental anxiety and pain perception in pediatric patients: a clinical study.

Therapeutic play and music therapy are promising behavioral techniques that could effectively reduce dental anxiety and pain perception. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of therapeutic play and music therapy on dental anxiety and pain levels in pediatric patients undergoing tooth extraction. 126 children aged 6–8 years who required maxillary molar extraction were divided into three groups (n = 42): control (Tell-Show-Do), music therapy, and therapeutic play groups. Vital signs (eg, heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and body temperature) were recorded, while the Modified Ch…

The effect of an online music program on children with cochlear implants' vocabulary, and maternal stress, and the role of the acoustic environment.

OBJECTIVES: We had two sets of objectives. First, to assess the effects of an online music program on the expressive vocabulary of children with cochlear implants (CIs) and on maternal stress. Second, to explore associations between children's vocabulary, maternal stress, and the quality of children's acoustic environment, measured as daily exposure to speech in quiet. METHODS: Sixteen children with CIs (M = 17.63 months, SD = 6.39) and their mothers participated weekly in a 12-week online music program (CI-T), and 16 children with CIs (M = 18.46 months, SD = 6.02) and their mothers served as…

Improved Singing Accuracy in Children With Bilateral Hearing Devices With More Musical Activities and Better Verbal Fluency.

OBJECTIVES: The singing pitch accuracy of children with hearing loss (HL) is typically poor, which may discourage them from singing. Improving this skill is important because it can further impact their cognitive and language development and overall well-being. In children with normal hearing (NH), improving singing pitch accuracy is associated with more musical activities and better language skills. We hypothesized that the singing pitch accuracy of children with HL (1) would be poorer than that of children with NH, (2) would improve more during the music intervention period than during the p…

The effect of music on breastfeeding: a systematic review and meta-analysis of breast milk production, composition, and maternal stress.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding is the gold standard for infant nutrition, yet maternal stress and anxiety, especially in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or due to postnatal pain, can inhibit the oxytocin-mediated milk ejection reflex, leading to reduced milk production and early cessation. Music intervention has been proposed as a non-pharmacological strategy to mitigate these stress responses. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to evaluate the effect of music interventions on objective breastfeeding outcomes (milk volume and composition), salivary cortisol stress mar…

Musical Feature Processing and Learning Difficulties in Greek School-Aged Children: Piloting of a Screening Tool for Amusia.

Background/Objectives: The present study aimed to describe a novel screening test for amusia and compare test performance between Greek children with learning difficulties and typical school-aged children. Additionally, it examined whether variables such as sex, age, and formal music education affect musical processing skills. Methods: We describe the construction and pilot testing of a musical processing screening tool consisting of seven tasks tapping on discreet auditory processing processes: "dissonant intervals", "out of tone", "interval discrimination", "musical semantic memory", "rhythm…
