Cancer treatment and growth cone-associated protein in human olfactory bulb glomeruli.

BACKGROUND: Growth cone-associated protein (GAP43) is found in growing axons and we hypothesized that systemic treatment with antineoplastic agents should disrupt regeneration of olfactory receptor cells. Disruption of regeneration should be evidenced by decreased presence of growing axons in the olfactory bulb. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate GAP43 in human olfactory bulb in normal controls and in individuals receiving treatment for neoplasms. DESIGN: Immunocytochemical studies were performed on autopsied human olfactory bulbs to identify both GAP43 and olfactory marker protein immunoreactivity. The

C-erb B-2 amplification in cystic renal disease.

Gene amplification (overexpression) of c-erb B-2 was tested in a variety of cystic renal diseases, renal cell neoplasms (adenomas and carcinomas) and end stage kidneys without cysts. C-erb B-2 encodes a receptor-like protein that shares homology with, but is distinct from the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor. A monoclonal antibody that immunoprecipitates a protein of approximately 185 kD from a lysate of NIH/3T3 cells transfected with the c-erb B-2 gene was utilized for testing. Simple renal cysts, cystic renal dysplasia, autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD), and non-cys

Radiotherapy alone for local tumour control in esthesioneuroblastoma.

Esthesioneuroblastoma is an uncommon tumour. Due to its low incidence, this neoplasm is difficult to evaluate and its treatment remains a matter of debate. Although the role of post-operative radiation is relatively well-defined, little is reported regarding the role of radiotherapy as the only treatment modality. A retrospective analysis of the literature has been conducted. With reference to the treatment of esthesioneuroblastoma, 55 patients submitted only to radiotherapy have been selected from publications of internationally indexed literature between 1979 and 2006. According to the Kadis

Neurogenic tumors of the abdomen and pelvis: imaging features, differential diagnosis, and diagnostic pitfalls.

Neurogenic tumors of the abdomen and pelvis are a diverse group of neoplasms arising from paraganglia, peripheral nerves, and autonomic ganglia. Their imaging appearances range from benign incidental lesions to aggressive neoplasms with metastatic potential, creating diagnostic challenges because of overlapping imaging features and broad differential diagnoses. Cross-sectional imaging, supplemented by functional imaging, plays a central role in lesion characterization, staging, and surgical planning. This review summarizes the imaging features of paraganglion cell-derived, nerve sheath-derived

Women with Gaucher Disease.

Gaucher disease is an inherited disorder in which there is a deficiency of the enzyme glucocerebrosidase, which leads to the accumulation of glucosylceramide. Although much scientific evidence is now available, there is still limited data on the impact on the different life stages of women with this disease. Among other alterations, a delay in menarche has been described, although it has not been related to fertility problems. Menorrhagia is relatively frequent, being related to the presence of thrombocytopenia, thrombocytopathies or coagulation disorders. On the other hand, pregnancy planning

Advances in treatment of alveolar soft part sarcoma: an updated review.

Alveolar soft part sarcoma is a rare neoplasm of uncertain histogenesis that belongs to a newly defined category of ultra-rare sarcomas. The neoplasm is characterized by a specific chromosomal translocation, der (17) t(X; 17)(p11.2;q25), that results in ASPSCR1-TFE3 gene fusion. The natural history of alveolar soft part sarcoma describes indolent behaviour with slow progression in deep soft tissues of the extremities, trunk and head/neck in adolescents and young adults. A high rate of detection of distant metastasis at presentation has been reported, and the most common metastatic sites in dec

Primary uterine osteosarcoma arising in a leiomyoma with rapid local recurrence: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is an extremely rare malignant neoplasm. Literature regarding primary osteosarcoma of the uterus is confined to only a small number of case reports. Case: A 57-year-old female with a history of uterine fibroids presented to the emergency department with abdominal pain. Imaging was notable for an enlarged uterus with a 15 cm calcified fibroid extending along the posterior uterus. The patient underwent a laparotomy for total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Pathological evaluation of the specimen yielded mesenchymal proliferation with osteo

Rare occurrence of pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) syndrome arising from a malignant transformed ovarian primary mature cystic teratoma treated by cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) syndrome is a disease process that typically occurs from ruptured appendiceal mucocele neoplasms. PMP syndrome arising from malignant transformation of an ovarian primary mature cystic teratoma (MCT) is a pathogenesis rarely encountered. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we report a 28-year-old patient evaluated and treated for a right ovarian mass and large volume symptomatic abdominopelvic mucinous ascites. Molecular profiling and genetic analysis revealed mutations in ATM, GNAS, and KRAS proteins while IHC demonstrated gastrointestinal-specific staining fo

Gastric neuroendocrine neoplasms: a primer for radiologists.

Gastric neuroendocrine neoplasms are uncommon tumors with variable differentiation and malignant potential. Three main subtypes are recognized: type 1, related to autoimmune atrophic gastritis; type 2, associated with Zollinger-Ellison and MEN1 syndrome; and type 3, sporadic. Although endoscopy alone is often sufficient for diagnosis and management of small, indolent, multifocal type 1 tumors, imaging is essential for evaluation of larger, high-grade, and type 2 and 3 neoplasms. Hypervascular intraluminal gastric masses are typically seen on CT/MRI, with associated perigastric lymphadenopathy

[FGFR1-mutated B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia transforming to myelodysplastic / myeloproliferative neoplasm and acute myeloid leukemia].

A 77-year-old male with hyperleukocytosis and thrombocytopenia was diagnosed with Philadelphia chromosome (Ph) -negative B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) ; he was treated with induction chemotherapy. Despite an initial complete remission, hyperleukocytosis was returned 18 months later. A bone marrow smear revealed a substantial increase in the number of myeloid cells with each stage of differentiation, which was markedly different from the initial presentation, resulting in the diagnosis of Ph-negative myelodysplastic syndrome/myeloproliferative neoplasm (MDS/MPN). After a month, an a

A new era for IFN-α in the treatment of Philadelphia-negative chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms.

In recent years, several studies have shown that IFN-?2 is able to induce molecular remissions with undetectable JAK2V617F in a subset of patients with essential thrombocythemia (ET) and polycythemia vera (PV), even with normalization of the bone marrow and sustained molecular remissions after discontinuation of IFN-?2. Accordingly, interest in using IFN-?2 in the treatment of patients with PV and related neoplasms has been revived. This article highlights the current status of IFN-?2 in the treatment of patients with ET, PV, primary myelofibrosis and myelofibrosis following ET and PV. In the

Atypical fibroxanthoma presenting in a patient with stage III mycosis fungoides.

The association of atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) and mycosis fungoides (MF) has never been reported. We report a 77-year-old female who was referred for Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) of an AFX on the right hand. At the time of presentation, this patient had stage III MF, with erythroderma and palpable lymph nodes. Our patient's AFX measured 1.5x2.8 cm. The tumor was removed by MMS with clear margins. The pathologic specimen revealed a relatively well-circumscribed neoplasm in the upper dermis composed of atypical spindle cells with pleomorphism, hyperchromatic nuclei, and brisk mitotic activi

Sarcomatoid neoplasms of the respiratory tract.

Sarcomatoid carcinomas (SCAs) of the respiratory tract are uncommon neoplasms of adults, most of whom are men in late middle-age who have a long history of tobacco usage. These tumors may be observed in the paranasal sinuses, nose, naso-oropharynx, larynx, trachea, central bronchi, or peripheral lung parenchyma. They may assume a polypoid configuration, with projection into luminal spaces, or show an infiltrative growth pattern like that of typical high-grade carcinoma. Histologically, both biphasic and monophasic variants of SCAs are recognized. The former include tumors with foci of overt ca

Thorotrast-induced hepatosplenic neoplasia: CT identification.

Despite discontinuation of its use in the 1950s, the consequences of Thorotrast usage continue to be recognized. In a review of plain film and CT findings of 20 cases of Thorotrast exposure, 15 of 17 patients demonstrated Thorotrast accumulation in the liver and spleen on plain films. Typically, this appeared as regions of trabeculated increased density within the liver. The spleen was of normal or decreased size and often demonstrated a finely punctate pattern of opacification. Only two malignancies could be suggested on plain film alone: one hepatic and one splenic. Five patients with hepati

Clinicopathological characteristics and prognostic outcomes of bladder urothelial neoplasms in patients under 40 years of age: a multicenter retrospective study.

Bladder cancer is rare in patients under 40 years of age, and its clinicopathological behavior in this demographic remains a subject of debate. This study aimed to evaluate the histopathological features and prognosis of bladder tumors in patients under the age of 40. This multicenter retrospective study included bladder transurethral resection, biopsy, and cystectomy samples obtained from patients younger than 40 years of age across 20 centers in Turkiye between 2010 and 2025. Among 1,555 biopsies, 445 patients were diagnosed as urothelial neoplasms. After exclusion of 45 patients lacking hem

Enhancing pancreatic cancer staging with large language models: the role of retrieval-augmented generation.

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is an emerging technique that enhances large language models (LLMs) by retrieving relevant information from reliable external knowledge (REK). Despite its success in various language processing tasks, the clinical application of RAG in radiology is still novel. To evaluate the utility of RAG in radiological staging tasks, we compared the performance of NotebookLM, a RAG-equipped LLM (RAG-LLM), with its internal model, Gemini 2.0 Flash. Using Japan’s current pancreatic cancer staging guideline as REK, we compared three LLM settings—(1) NotebookLM with REK (R
