BACKGROUND: Superficial basal cell carcinoma (SBCC) is the rare subtype of basal cell carcinoma (BCC). BCC occurs in exposed areas such as the head and face, SCBB prone to form in trunk. Due to the manifestation of erythema and desquamation, it is prone to misdiagnosed as Bowen's disease in clinica.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 68-year-old female presented with coin-sized erythema located on the lower abdomen for 5 years. Histopathological examination was performed, and results informed the diagnosis of SBCC. Lesions were detected by dermoscopy, reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) and multiphot

BACKGROUND: Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC), which includes both Bowen's disease (BD) and superficial basal cell carcinoma (sBCC), is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Canada. BD and sBCC are amenable to minimally invasive treatments however, large-scale studies assessing long-term outcomes are lacking, particularly regarding the timing and duration of non-invasive combination treatments.
OBJECTIVE: Examine the clinical cure rate of BD and sBCC using a combination treatment consisting of a single cycle of cryotherapy followed by a three to four-week course of topical 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)

INTRODUCTION: Locally advanced basal cell carcinoma (laBCC) represents approximatively 1% of all BCCs. Metastatic BCC (mBCC) is even more rare. Most cases are observed in immunocompromised patients, particularly solid organ transplant recipients (OTRs). When surgery and/or radiation therapy for laBCC or mBCC is not reasonable, oral hedgehog inhibitor (HHI) therapy may be initiated. LaBCC or mBCC patients with primary or secondary resistance, progression or intolerance to HHIs could benefit from programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) inhibitors as this has recently been published for cemiplimab

The most recent data relating to the incidence of, and mortality from, the three commonest forms of skin cancer, namely basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and cutaneous melanoma (CM), in the Black African, Colored, Asian/Indian and White population groups in South Africa are reviewed. While exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation is the major environmental risk factor for BCC in all four groups, for SSC in the White and Asian/Indian groups and for CM in the White group, this is unlikely to be the case for most SCCs in the Black African group and for most CMs in the Black

INTRODUCTION: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer, accounting for 50% of all cancer in the United States. Mortality is often considered negligible due to the rare rate of metastasis at 0.0028% or 1 in 1,000,000 BCC diagnoses. There are on 230 reported cases of metastatic basal cell carcinoma in the world literature review. When it does spread, it usually involves the lymph nodes, lungs, and bones. BCC carcinoma is considered high-risk or severe if the tumor is greater than 5 cm in size, is a recurrent lesion, located on the face, or has perineural/perivascular invasion.

Neurocristic hamartomas (NCH) of cutaneous origin are especially rare congenital or acquired neoplasms that often arise through aberrant embryologic development of pluripotent neural crest cells. Clinically, they often present as pigmented macules or papules on the scalp with associated alopecia. NCHs are characterized histopathologically by dermal melanocytic, fibroblastic, and neurosustentacular components. Correct identification of this etiology is critical because of potential for malignant transformation, particularly in acquired NCHs. Our patient was a 6-year-old girl with xeroderma pigm

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) portends a notoriously favorable prognosis in most patients with morbidity limited to localized destruction and recurrence. Metastatic BCC (mBCC) is an unexpected outcome affecting less than 1% of patients with a known primary lesion and predominantly involves regional lymph nodes. Reports of isolated bone involvement and spinal cord compression are rare. In the cases we identified in the literature, patients presented with massive primary lesions on the trunk that had been present for years and that were often still present at the time of diagnosis. Additionally, hi

Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) are common malignancies that usually show clear histomorphologic features, but in certain instances, it can display different patterns of differentiation leading to potential diagnostic confusion. BCCs with neuroendocrine differentiation/expression have been mentioned only briefly in the literature. In this study, we present cases of BCCs with neuroendocrine differentiation/expression that demonstrate reproducible histopathological features. Twenty-four cases were included in the study. All tumors showed conventional histopathologic features that are seen in BCCs,

BACKGROUND: A dramatic rise in the incidence rates of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in young women has been reported.
OBJECTIVES: We investigate potential risk factors (RF) for sporadic BCC in young patients and the current distribution of such RF in the general population of Catalonia, comparing the differences among men and women.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A case-control study was performed, 69 BCCs diagnosed in patients ≤ 45 years of age vs. 69 healthy controls. Afterward, 1,078 participants from the general population completed an RF questionnaire.
RESULTS: Repeated sunburns were more frequent

BACKGROUND: There is limited literature on efficacy in 5-aminolaevulinic acid (BF-200 ALA) and methyl-5-aminolaevulinate (MAL) for superficial basal cell carcinoma (sBCC).
AIMS: To investigate the efficacy and safety of PDT in sBCC.
METHODS: Analytical observational study between January 2014 and January 2017. Follow-up at 12, 24 and 52 weeks. Lesions were treated with one BF-200 ALA-PDT or MAL-PDT cycle of two sessions in one week. A second treatment cycle, with the same photosensitizer precursor, was performed in cases of clinical persistence at 12 weeks.
RESULTS: A total of 22 patients (

A 52-year-old white man with alcoholic cirrhosis presented to the Mohs surgery clinic with a 1-month history of tender "bumps" located diffusely on his scalp. Two biopsies performed at an outside institution were read as "basal cell carcinoma" and "actinic keratosis." The patient was scheduled for a large excision of the scalp for presumed multiple nodules of basal cell carcinoma and desired a second opinion from our Mohs surgery clinic.

We describe the case of a 67-year-old man who exhibited unsteadiness in walking, topographical disorientation, and urinary incontinence. Neurological examination revealed somnolence and mild weakness in the lower limbs with slight rigidity in the upper limbs. Cerebrospinal fluid examination showed pleocytosis with "flower cells" and an extremely high level of soluble interleukin-2 receptor. T2-weighted brain imaging revealed symmetrical high-intensity lesions in the bilateral caudate putamen. Positron emission tomography demonstrated intense uptake of 2-[fluorine-18]-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose i

Sunscreens protect against sunburn, but there is no evidence that they protect against basal cell carcinoma or melanoma. Problems lie in the behavior of individuals who use sunscreens to stay out longer in the sun than they otherwise would. Vitamin D inhibition is, at this stage, unlikely due to insufficient use by individuals. Safety of sunscreens is a concern, and sunscreen companies have emotionally and inaccurately promoted the use of sunscreens.

BACKGROUND: Human papilloma virus (HPV) is increasingly recognized as an important human carcinogen but its role in the aetiopathogenesis of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in immunocompetent individuals is unclear.
OBJECTIVE: A prospective case-control study was designed to compare the prevalence of HPV in BCC and normal skin samples from immunocompetent subjects and to assess the influence of different clinical features on the risk of cutaneous HPV.
METHODS: A total of 142 samples from 70 BCC cases (superficial BCC 38 and nodular BCC 32) and 72 controls were analysed by a degenerated nested PCR
