Metaplastic carcinoma masquerading as fibromatosis: A diagnostic dilemma.

Metaplastic breast carcinoma (MBC) is a rare, heterogeneous group of neoplasm of breast, accounting for about 0.2-1% of all invasive breast carcinomas. Its variants include low grade adenosquamous carcinoma, fibromatosis like metaplastic carcinoma, spindle cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and mixed metaplastic carcinoma. We report a case of a 48 year old female, who presented with painful lump in lower inner quadrant of right breast since one and half month, gradually increasing in size. Trucut biopsy was reported as Fibromatosis of breast. Excisional biopsy was consistent with malignan

Expression of podoplanin in primary and metastatic poorly differentiated and undifferentiated carcinomas of the head and neck.

UNLABELLED: The invasive growth properties of head and neck carcinoma can be determined by proteins associated with cellular motility. Podoplanin is a recently identified protein associated with motility of cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-five tumour specimens of 51 patients with poorly and undifferentiated carcinomas were investigated for podoplanin expression. All tissues were fixed in buffered formalin and embedded in paraffin. RESULTS: Podoplanin expression showed a tendency towards a more intense staining in carcinomas with a squamous epithelia differentiation compared to tumours wi

The single-cell transcriptional landscape of lung carcinoid tumors.

Lung carcinoid tumors, also referred to as pulmonary neuroendocrine tumors or lung carcinoids, are rare neoplasms of the lung with a more favorable prognosis than other subtypes of lung cancer. Still, some patients suffer from relapsed disease and metastatic spread. Several recent single-cell studies have provided detailed insights into the cellular heterogeneity of more common lung cancers, such as adeno- and squamous cell carcinoma. However, the characteristics of lung carcinoids on the single-cell level are yet completely unknown. To study the cellular composition and single-cell gene expre

Patterns of recurrence in HNSCC patients treated definitively with upfront surgery, chemoradiation.

PURPOSE: Locally-advanced oropharynx (LA-OPSCC) and hypopharynx/larynx (LA-HPLSCC) cancers may be treated with surgical or non-surgical modalities. While survival outcomes are comparable, patterns of disease recurrence are not well established. METHODS: Retrospective review of 98 consecutive patients with LA-OPSCC or LA-HPLSCC treated by either surgery plus adjuvant therapy (S-POAT, n = 48) or chemoradiation (CRT, n = 50). RESULTS: CRT-treated patients had higher recurrence risk (42% vs 14.6%, p = 0.003). This was significant only among LA-OPSCC (p = 0.002) but not LA-HPLSCC patients (p = 0.

Tertiary lymphoid structures associate with improved survival in early oral tongue cancer.

BACKGROUND: The clinical significance of tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs) is not well-documented in early oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC). METHODS: A total of 310 cases of early (cT1-2N0) OTSCC were included in this multicenter study. Assessment of TLSs was conducted on hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections. TLSs were assessed both in the central part of the tumor and at the invasive front area. RESULTS: The presence of TLSs associated with improved survival of early OTSCC as presented by Kaplan-Meier survival analyses for disease-specific survival (P = 0.01) and overall surv

A Prognostic Model Generated from an Apparent Diffusion Coefficient Ratio Reliably Predicts the Outcomes of Oral Tongue Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

This study aimed to develop an apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) ratio-based prognostic model to predict the recurrence and disease-free survival (DFS) of oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC). A total of 188 patients with cT1-2 oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma were enrolled retrospectively. Clinical and laboratory data were extracted from medical records. The ADC values were measured at the regions of interest of the tumor and non-tumor tissues of the MRI images, and the ADC ratio was used for comparison between the patient with recurrence (n = 83 case, 44%) and patients without r

Patterns of recurrence amongst patients undergoing resection of oral squamous cell carcinoma with curative intent.

This study was aimed to identify key clinicopathological variables that predict recurrence in those undergoing curative resection of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) with emphasis on initial treatment failure patterns. Between February 2006 to May 2020, clinicopathological data on 833 patients who underwent curative resection of OSCC were gathered. Outcomes of interest included local, regional, distant, and overall recurrence. Univariate analysis was performed to identify significant clinicopathological variables for each recurrence type, and a multivariate regression analysis was utilised

A New Nomogram for Predicting Overall Survival and Assisting Postoperative Adjuvant Treatment Decision-Making in Stage II Oral Tongue Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Database Analysis.

PURPOSE: The survival benefit of postoperative adjuvant treatment (POAT) for stage II oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC) remains controversial. This large SEER-based study aims to establish a prognostic nomogram to visualize the overall survival of these patients and to aid in POAT decision making. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The cut-off points of age at diagnosis and examined lymph node number (ELN) were determined using the population-based data from the SEER database. Univariate and multivariate Cox hazards regression models were utilized to identify prognostic factors that were integra

Clinicopathological and genomic features of superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinomas in nondrinker, nonsmoker females.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is sometimes detected in non-drinker and non-smoker females who are considered to have very low risk of ESCC development in daily practice. This study examined the clinicopathological and genomic characteristics of ESCCs in females with no history of drinking and smoking. METHODS: The sample comprised 118 ESCC lesions occurring in 95 female patients who underwent endoscopic submucosal dissection at our department between January 2008 and December 2019. The patients were categorized into two groups: 51 lesions in 49 patients with no history

Latin American Consensus on the Treatment of Head and Neck Cancer.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is well known as a serious health problem worldwide, especially in low-income countries or those with limited resources, such as most countries in Latin America. International guidelines cannot always be applied to a population from a large region with specific conditions. This study established a Latin American guideline for care of patients with head and neck cancer and presented evidence of HNSCC management considering availability and oncologic benefit. A panel composed of 41 head and neck cancer experts systematically worked according to a mod

Multimodality treatment of locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the oesophagus: A comprehensive review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Surgery is the mainstay of treatment for oesophageal squamous-cell carcinoma (OSCC) but with poor results. Attempts to improve patient outcome have been made by introducing chemotherapy (CT), radiotherapy (RT), or both (CRT). However, randomized comparisons for all these strategies are not always available. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted an extensive literature search for studies comparing surgery with multimodality treatment (i.e. [neo-]adjuvant CT or RT or CRT or definitive CRT). Network meta-analysis was performed in a Bayesian framewor and node-split models were built to a

Combined cytotoxic action of paclitaxel and ceramide against the human Tu138 head and neck squamous carcinoma cell line.

PURPOSE: Paclitaxel, a chemotherapeutic agent used in the treatment of recalcitrant ovarian and breast as well as other neoplasms, is being investigated for the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. Our previous studies have demonstrated that exogenously added ceramide enhances apoptosis in paclitaxel-exposed human leukemic cells. In this study, we showed that exogenous ceramide augmented paclitaxel-induced apoptosis in Tu138 cells in vitro when added simultaneously in combination with the paclitaxel. METHODS: The combined cytotoxic effects of paclitaxel and ceramide expo

Paraneoplastic Manifestation of Primary Squamous Cell Cancer of the Thyroid Gland.

Paraneoplastic manifestation (PNM) of cancers is a non-metastatic, non-invasive systemic effect of malignancies due to chemokines and hormones produced by the primary neoplasm. Squamous cell cancers (SCCs) are known to present with PNM. Primary SCC of thyroid accounts for <1% of all thyroid malignancies and carries a very poor prognosis. We present a rare case of SCC arising from the thyroid gland who presented with fever, leukemoid reaction and hypercalcemia as part of PNM. A 67-year-old male patient presented with two months history of intermittent high-grade fever, weakness, loss of weight

Medullary Carcinoma of the Penis: A Distinctive HPV-related Neoplasm: A Report of 12 Cases.

A third to half of penile invasive squamous cell carcinomas are human papillomavirus (HPV) related. Warty (condylomatous), warty-basaloid, and basaloid carcinomas are the most common subtypes associated with HPV. Less frequent are clear cell and lymphoepithelioma-like carcinomas. Here we report a novel penile tumor associated with HPV. Twelve cases were selected from 1010 penile carcinomas, part of an international HPV detection study conducted at the Institut Català d'Oncologia, Barcelona, Spain. Immunostaining with p16 was performed on all cases, and HPV-mRNA detection was also performed. En
