Plaque-type blue nevus (PTBN) is a rare variant of blue nevus that mostly involves the breast, head, neck, trunk, and, rarely, the hand and palm. In this study, we report a rare case of congenital PTBN involving the right palm since birth. A 10-year-old girl presented to our department with plaque in her right palm accompanied by a tingling sensation for 1 month. Histochemical analysis indicated a heavily pigmented melanocyte proliferation in the dermis, subcutis, and fascia. The patient was diagnosed with congenital PTBN and underwent surgical excision. No recurrence was observed during a 5-y…

This article reports a case of Spitz nevus with ALK positive nasal cavity in a 3-year-old and 5-month-old female child. The clinical manifestation is red patches on the nose of the child, gradually increasing in size, without itching or pain. Histopathological examination showed a large proliferation of spindle shaped cells in the dermis, without any evidence of nuclear fission. Spindle shaped cells show positive reactions to markers such as S100, SOX10, ALK, P16, MelanA, etc. Pathological diagnosis of Spitz nevus with ALK positivity. Spitz nevus is a benign proliferative lesion of melanocytes…

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Choroidal nevus necessitates regular monitoring due to its potential for malignant transformation. We identified features associated with lost to follow-up (LTFU), delayed follow-up (DFU), and appropriate follow-up (AFU) in choroidal nevus patients.
SUBJECTS/METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analysed 825 adults diagnosed with choroidal nevus between January 1, 2006, and December 31, 2015, in Olmsted County, Minnesota. Patient demographics, tumour features, and clinical outcomes were assessed according to follow-up status.
RESULTS: Among the patients, 82 (9.9%) w…

OBJECTIVE: This clinical study described the application of the preexpanded paramedian frontal flap in the repair of midfacial congenital melanocytic nevus to summarize the aesthetic effects of this facial repair.
METHODS: The authors analyzed data from 15 patients (8 males and 7 females) who underwent median facial pigmented nevus repair with a preexpanded parafrontal median flap. The operation was divided into 3 stages as follows: tissue expander implantation under the prefrontal area, the flap with pedicled transfer after nevus removal after 2 to 3 months of expansion, and the vascular ped…

Congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN), arising from the proliferation of melanocytes, manifest at birth and are colloquially termed as bathing trunk, coat-sleeve, or stocking nevi. These lesions, occurring in approximately 1 to 2% of neonates, predominantly localize over the trunk and thigh regions. Giant congenital nevi, characterized by a size exceeding 20 cm, often present with pigmentation and hairiness. Herein, we present the case of a 14-year-old patient diagnosed with a giant congenital nevus (bathing trunk nevus) accompanied by lipomatosis, while concurrently reviewing the literature to de…

Linear nevus sebaceous syndrome (LNSS) is a neurocutaneous disorder caused by somatic gain-of-function mutations in KRAS or HRAS. LNSS brains have neurodevelopmental defects, including cerebral defects and epilepsy; however, its pathological mechanism and potentials for treatment are largely unclear. We show that introduction of KRASG12V in the developing mouse cortex results in subcortical nodular heterotopia and enhanced excitability, recapitulating major pathological manifestations of LNSS. Moreover, we show that decreased firing frequency of inhibitory neurons without KRASG12V expression l…

Nevus sebaceus (NS) or organoid nevus is an epidermal nevus comprising predominantly sebaceous glands with a prevalence of approximately 0.3% of the newborns. The initial clinical manifestations of NS are single or less commonly multiple yellowish patches with overlying alopecia, usually confined to the scalp. However, it can also appear on the face, preauricular area, and the neck. During puberty, skin lesions will turn into round or linear verrucous plaques accompanied with an increase in number due to the influence of androgens. As they progress, about 20% of the NS cases might turn into se…

To describe a modified anchored suture technique combined with varied flaps for the repair of paranasal skin defect secondary to melanocytic nevus excision. The feasibility and effectiveness of the technique were discussed. A total of 26 patients (10 male and 16 female) with an average age of 11.1 years were included in this retrospective study. All patients underwent the anchored suture technique. The subcutaneous tissue of the free margin of the cheek flap was sutured to the deep pyriform ligament. The local flaps were designed according to the size and shape of the defect. The diameter of t…

INTRODUCTION: Giant congenital melanocytic nevus (GCMN) is a large melanocytic nevus, and its full-thickness removal is usually difficult due to the lack of skin available for reconstruction. Curettage is an alternative approach in cases of GCMN to remove the superficial dermis above the cleavage plane with a curette in the neonatal period, and its major complications include repigmentation, retarded epithelization, and hypertrophic scar formation. In Japan, the JACE® cultured epidermal autograft (CEA) was approved and covered by public healthcare insurance for the treatment of congenital mela…

Sebaceous nevus (SN), is a skin hamartoma, combining a variety of epidermal, follicular, sebaceous, and apocrine abnormalities. Although usually present at birth, it may become apparent later in life appearing as a yellowish-brown, verrucous plaque with alopecia. SN is implicated with secondary tumors arising on the hairless plaque during the adulthood. Lichen planopilaris is a common, primary lymphocytic scarring alopecia of unknown etiology, characterized by lichenoid/interface perifollicular lymphocytic infiltrate occurring at the level of the infundibulum and the isthmus. Here, we present …

Melanomas, like nonmelanoma skin cancers, are known to be causally related to sun exposure. It is therefore not surprising to see benign nev … ignificant host response, suggesting that they were either histiocytes or an associated melanocytic nevus. Recognition of this potential pitfall may be helpful in the diagnosis of primary/in-transit/satellite/metastatic melanoma as well as when evaluating marginal status and determining Breslow thickness.

BACKGROUND: Cerebellopontine angle represents a complex anatomical area of the brain. A cerebellopontine angle lesion could be a vestibular schwannoma, meningioma, epidermoid cyst, or less likely, arachnoid cyst, metastasis, lower cranial nerves schwannoma, lipoma, hemangioma, paraganglioma, or vertebra-basilar dolichoectasia. Primary meningeal melanocytoma is a rare neoplasm, especially when it occurs at the cerebellopontine angle. Nevus of Ota (aka oculodermal melanocytosis) is a hyperpigmentation along the distribution of the ophthalmic and maxillary branches of trigeminal nerve; it occurs …

BACKGROUND: White sponge nevus is a rare autosomal dominant disorder that affects the non-keratinised stratified squamous epithelium. Mutations in the genes that encode mucosa-specific keratin-4 and keratin-13 are strongly linked to the manifestation of white sponge nevus. This study involved mutational analysis of the genes encoding keratin-4 and keratin-13 in two Swedish families with white sponge nevus.
METHODS: The diagnosis of white sponge nevus was based on disease history, clinical characteristics of the lesions and, in the majority of the cases, histopathological examination. Samples …
