The Massachusetts Nursing Task Force was established to promote the integration of primary palliative nursing competencies in nursing education across the state. A statewide survey revealed that only 23% of baccalaureate nursing programs felt their students were well-prepared in this area. Moreover, there was limited integration of evidence-based resources due to curriculum constraints, lack of faculty time, and financial limitations. To address these challenges, the Massachusetts Nursing Task Force implemented a 2-pronged approach: an End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium train-the-trainer

Although exact numbers are not known, it is recognized that addiction to alcohol and other drugs occurs in nurses as it does in other occupations. There is some indication that nurses may be at greater risk for the development of addictive disease because of factors present in the profession. The nursing profession is recognizing the problem impaired practice presents and is working to develop programs to ensure that the issue of the impaired nurse is no longer denied by institutions, administrators, and individual nurses. There is a need for education of the profession in regard to the nature

BACKGROUND: Oncology nurse practitioners (ONPs) are advanced practice RNs prepared at the graduate level with high-level knowledge and skills in oncology. Because of challenges in educational programs and variability in the scope of practice at the state and institutional level, many ONPs are challenged to practice to the full extent of their education, certification, and licensure.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this article is to review issues affecting the education and practice patterns of ONPs and to identify solutions to address the challenges that exist for ONPs.

Infertility is a common result of cancer treatment; however, opportunities exist for patients to preserve fertility prior to treatment. Recent evidence suggests that healthcare providers, including nurses, do not consistently discuss fertility preservation (FP) with patients. This qualitative, cross-sectional pilot study used a focus group and in-depth interviews to explore knowledge, attitudes, and practice behaviors related to nurses' discussion of FP with patients with cancer. Results indicate that only half of the nurses discuss FP methods with patients, even though most believe that havin

This protocol describes a standardized, reproducible, multicomponent respiratory guidance and nursing care intervention for elderly patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Based on Orem's self-care deficit nursing theory, the method integrates structured breathing training, respiratory muscle training, aerobic exercise, and continuous nursing support. The intervention is delivered by trained respiratory nurses over a 12-week period in inpatient and outpatient settings. The protocol includes procedures for patient selection, group allocation, baseline assessment, and structu
