A systematic review and meta-analysis on the association between orthostatic hypotension and mild cognitive impairment and dementia in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is a frequent disabling feature of Parkinson's disease (PD). Orthostatic hypotension (OH) is treatable and may be a risk factor for cognitive impairment. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the relationship between OH with PD-associated minimal cognitive impairment (PD-MCI) and dementia (PDD) and assess the mitigating effects of potential confounding factors. METHODS: Observational studies published in English, Spanish, French, or Portuguese up to January 2022 were searched for in PubMed, EBSCO, and SciELO databases. The p

Sertraline-Induced Tics: A Case Report and Narrative Review.

This brief report describes the case of a 16-year-old girl who was commenced on sertraline for anxiety and depression, and subsequently developed severe and debilitating motor tics. Cessation of sertraline was associated with the resolution of tics; after this, paroxetine was trialled and well tolerated with good response of targeted symptoms and without re-emergence of tics. A narrative literature review yielded a retrospective observational study and eight single case reports on selective serotonin receptor inhibitor-induced motor tics (three in adolescents and five in adults). Tics are not

Adverse childhood experiences and risk of diabetes: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and diabetes is unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to quantify the association between the number and types of ACEs and diabetes during adulthood based on available observational studies. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search of studies exploring the association between ACEs and diabetes was conducted in PubMed, Medline, and Embase databases until 15 April 2022. A random-effects model was used to pool odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the number and types of ACEs with diabe

Patient Satisfaction With Spinal Cord Stimulation and Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulation for Chronic Intractable Pain: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: In the spinal cord stimulation (SCS) and dorsal root ganglion stimulation (DRG-S) literature, the typical primary outcome measure includes pain relief, whether numeric rating scale changes or percentage pain relief, and functional outcomes and patient satisfaction are included as secondary outcomes. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to determine the rate of patient satisfaction with the use of SCS and DRG-S in the treatment of chronic intractable pain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study protocol was registered in the PROSPERO International prospective register of systema

Global prevalence of metabolic syndrome in patients with psoriasis in the past two decades: current evidence.

Patients with psoriasis are at an increased risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS); however, a systematic analysis of its global prevalence has not been performed to date. Here, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the prevalence of MetS among patients with psoriasis. We searched five databases from inception through September 2021 and used the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) tools to assess observational study quality. Stata SE 15.1 was used to perform the data analysis. Subgroup, meta-regression and sensitivity analyses we

A fresh look at the role of spiramycin in preventing a neglected disease: meta-analyses of observational studies.

PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate the effect of antepartum treatment with spiramycin with or without subsequent pyrimethamine-sulfonamide-folinic acid, compared to no treatment, on the rate of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) and incidence/severity of sequelae in the offspring. METHODS: Embase and PubMed were searched for literature on spiramycin in pregnant women suspected/diagnosed with T. gondii infection. Meta-analyses were performed using random-effects model. RESULTS: Thirty-three studies (32 cohorts and 1 cross-sectional study), with a total of 15,40

Effectiveness of Aspirin in COPD: Biases in the Observational Studies.

Several observational studies report decreased incidence of mortality and of exacerbations with aspirin use in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), with calls for a large randomized trial. Aspirin does have local and systemic pulmonary mechanisms of action that could make this drug beneficial in the treatment of COPD. However, the potential for biases in the observational studies has not been examined. We searched the literature for all observational studies reporting on the effect of aspirin in COPD patients on exacerbation and mortality. We reviewed the studies for the

Delivery management of a complete hydatidiform mole and co-existing viable fetus: A meta-analysis and systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: A twin pregnancy with a complete hydatidiform mole and co-existing viable fetus (CHMCF) is an exceedingly rare obstetric complication with few data related to perinatal treatment. This study determined the optimal timing of pregnancy termination and mode of delivery in women with CHMCF and a viable fetus. METHODS: The articles published involving CHMCF and a viable fetus from 1967 to 31 December 2020 in the PubMed and EMBASE databases were systematically reviewed. Observational cohort studies with three or more cases identified and data on delivery management were selected. The art

Maternal Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Health After Placental Abruption: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (CHAP-SR).

Placental abruption and cardiovascular disease (CVD) have common etiological underpinnings, and there is accumulating evidence that abruption may be associated with future CVD. We estimated associations between abruption and coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke. The meta-analysis was based on the random-effects risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) as the effect measure. We conducted a bias analysis to account for abruption misclassification, selection bias, and unmeasured confounding. We included 11 cohort studies comprising 6,325,152 pregnancies, 69,759 abruptions, and 49,265 C

Infection, antibiotic exposure, and risk of celiac disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: There is evidence of a relationship between infection (and the associated antibiotic exposure) and the risk of celiac disease (CD). This study performed a meta-analysis to investigate this relationship. METHODS: To identify relevant studies, we conducted systematic searches of the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases for articles published up to April 2019. Random effects models were used to determine overall pooled estimates and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: The meta-analysis included 19 observational studies (15 on infection and six on antibiotic exposure).
