Activation of Functional Somatic Stem Cells Promotes Endogenous Tissue Regeneration.

Periodontal ligament derived stem cells (PDLSCs) are capable of differentiating into multiple cell types and inducing a promising immunomodulation for tissue regeneration and disease treatment. However, it is still challenging to develop a practical approach to activate endogenous stem cells for tissue self-healing and regeneration. In this study, transcriptome analysis reveals that resveratrol promotes PDLSC stemness through activation of stem cell, osteoprogenitor, and chondroprogenitor markers. Self-renewal and multipotent differentiation abilities are also improved in resveratrol-treated P

A review of the possible associations between ambient PM2.5 exposures and the development of Alzheimer's disease.

PM2.5 particles in air pollution have been widely considered associated with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Recent studies have shown that PM2.5 can also cause central nervous system (CNS) diseases, including a variety of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Activation of microglia in the central nervous system can lead to inflammatory and neurological damage. PM2.5 will reduce the methylation level of DNA and affect epigenetics. PM2.5 enters the human body through a variety of pathways to have pathological effects on CNS. For example, PM2.5 can destroy the i

Chemosensory Responses to the Repellent Nepeta Essential Oil and Its Major Component Nepetalactone by Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae), a Vector of Zika Virus.

Nepeta essential oil (Neo; catnip) and its major component, nepetalactone, have long been known to repel insects including mosquitoes. However, the neural mechanisms through which these repellents are detected by mosquitoes, including the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti (L.), an important vector of Zika virus, were poorly understood. Here we show that Neo volatiles activate olfactory receptor neurons within the basiconic sensilla on the maxillary palps of female Ae. aegypti. A gustatory receptor neuron sensitive to the feeding deterrent quinine and housed within sensilla on the labella of

Chemosensory event-related brain potentials (CSERP) after strictly monorhinal stimulation.

Using flow-olfactometer for chemosensory event related brain potentials (CSERP) the air escapes the contralateral nostril from the stimulated nostril via the nasopharynx. Theoretically, the escaping odorous airflow is able to stimulate the contralateral chemosensory receptors and might activate the olfactory or the trigeminal brain processes. Testing 18 healthy subjects, we were able to show that it was possible to generate CSERP by strictly monorhinal stimulation with closed contralateral nostril. That means that the rectangular shapes of the brief chemosensory stimuli were not disturbed. The

Face adaptation aftereffects reveal anterior medial temporal cortex role in high level category representation.

Previous studies have shown reductions of the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signal in response to repetition of specific visual stimuli. We examined how adaptation affects the neural responses associated with categorization behavior, using face adaptation aftereffects. Adaptation to a given facial category biases categorization towards non-adapted facial categories in response to presentation of ambiguous morphs. We explored a hypothesis, posed by recent psychophysical studies, that these adaptation-induced categorizations are mediated by activity in relatively advanced stages w

Use of chemical communication in the management of freshwater aquatic species that are vectors of human diseases or are invasive.

Chemical communication occurs when both originator (signaller) and one or more receiver(s) possess specializations for chemical exchange of information. Chemical information can be used by a wide variety of species to locate food and mates, avoid predators and engage in social interactions. In this review, we focus on chemical signalling between mates or cues from nest sites or hosts by selected aquatic pest species and indicate how chemical information can be used to manage pests. The pests are vectors of disease (blood-sucking insects) or invasive species (crayfishes and fishes) that have ex

Kallmann's syndrome: molecular pathogenesis.

Kallmann's syndrome (KS) is a genetic condition characterised by hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism (HH) and anosmia; although these are the defining features of the condition, additional neurological and non-neurological sequel may also occur depending on the specific mode of inheritance. KS affects about 1 in 8000 males and 1 in 40,000 females, with most presentations being of the 'sporadic' type. Of the inherited forms, hitherto, only the gene responsible for the X-linked form (X-KS), namely KAL-1, has been identified and the encoded protein, anosmin-1, consists primarily of a whey acidic prote

Regeneration of the olfactory tract following neonatal lesion in rats.

Neuronal regeneration following early postnatal olfactory tract transection (OTS) was investigated in newborn Wistar rats. Olfactory tract lesioned rats were sacrificed at different time periods and the brains processed for Nissl staining. This was used to study the neural cell architecture; fiber tracts (myelinated fibers) were examined with Luxol Fast Blue staining. In addition, a neuronal tracing technique (i.e., retrograde labeling) was employed to study the reestablishment of connections with the target sites following transection of the tract. Degeneration of the olfactory tract was evid

Dendrodendritic recurrent excitation in mitral cells of the rat olfactory bulb.

Most neuronal interactions within the olfactory bulb network are mediated by dendrodendritic synapses. Dendritic transmitter release potentially could affect the parent dendrite as well as local neuronal elements that have receptors for the released transmitter. Here we report that under conditions that facilitate N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor activity (reduced GABAA inhibition and extracellular Mg2+), a single action potential evoked by brief intracellular current pulses in mitral cells is followed by a prolonged depolarization, which is blocked by an NMDA receptor antagonist. This dep

Detection of glia-derived nexin in the olfactory system of the rat.

Glia-derived nexin (GDN) is a 43 kd cell-secreted protease inhibitor with neurite promoting activity. We have raised specific polyclonal antisera to rat GDN. These antibodies stain a single band at 43 kd on immunoblots of concentrated C6 glioma-conditioned medium and have been used to demonstrate that GDN is present in the olfactory system of the rat. One band at 43 kd is recognized by the GDN antibodies on immunoblots of olfactory bulb homogenate. Immunohistochemistry shows that GDN occurs predominantly in the olfactory nerve layer of the olfactory bulb and in the olfactory submucosa. Compara

Aroma Formation, Release, and Perception in Aquatic Products Processing: A Review.

Flavor, as one of the primary factors that attracts consumers, has always been a crucial indicator for evaluating the quality of food. From processing to final consumption, the conditions that affect consumers' perception of the aroma of aquatic products can be divided into three stages: aroma formation, release, and signal transmission. Currently, there are few reviews on the formation, release, and perception of aroma in aquatic products, which has affected the product development of aquatic products. This review summarizes aroma formation pathways, the effects of processing methods, charact

Does protracted radon exposure play a role in the development of dementia?

Radon is a ubiquitous radioactive gas that decays into a series of solid radioactive decay products. Radon, and its decay products, enter the human body primarily through inhalation and can be delivered to various tissues including the brain through systemic circulation. It can also reach the brain by neuronal pathways via the olfactory system. While ionizing radiation has been suggested as a risk factor of dementia for decades, studies exploring the possible role of radon exposure in the development of Alzheimer's Diseases (AD) and other dementias are sparse. We systematically reviewed the li

Particle size-dependent efficiency and mechanistic insights of nose-to-brain delivery bypassing the BBB.

Central nervous system (CNS) diseases remain a therapeutic challenge due to the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The nose-to-brain pathway offers a promising non-invasive route to bypass the BBB, yet the impact of nanocarrier size on this multi-stage delivery process is poorly understood. This study systematically investigated the role of particle size using solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNS) of 80, 120, 240, 360, and 480 nm, formulated into nasal sprays. In vivo imaging in mice revealed a non-monotonic relationship, with 240 nm SLNS (SLNS3) achieving peak brain accumulation via both olfactory and tri

Cortical field maps across human sensory cortex.

Cortical processing pathways for sensory information in the mammalian brain tend to be organized into topographical representations that encode various fundamental sensory dimensions. Numerous laboratories have now shown how these representations are organized into numerous cortical field maps (CMFs) across visual and auditory cortex, with each CFM supporting a specialized computation or set of computations that underlie the associated perceptual behaviors. An individual CFM is defined by two orthogonal topographical gradients that reflect two essential aspects of feature space for that sense.

Convergent biological pathways underlying the Kallmann syndrome-linked genes Hs6st1 and Fgfr1.

Kallmann syndrome (KS) is a congenital disorder characterized by idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and olfactory dysfunction. KS is linked to variants in >34 genes, which are scattered across the human genome and show disparate biological functions. Although the genetic basis of KS is well studied, the mechanisms by which disruptions of these diverse genes cause the same outcome of KS are not fully understood. Here we show that disruptions of KS-linked genes affect the same biological processes, indicating convergent molecular mechanisms underlying KS. We carried out machine learning-ba

Exposure duration and cerebral amyloidosis in the olfactory cortex of World Trade Center responders: A positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Amyloid-β proteins, a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease, are believed to play an adaptive role in the cerebral immune response. OBJECTIVE: Amyloid is believed to play a role in cerebral immune response and could play a similar role in response to air pollution exposures. In the present study, we examined whether WTC exposure duration was associated with cerebral amyloidosis in WTC responders. METHODS: WTC responders (aged 44-65 years) who varied in exposure duration but did not use personalized protective equipment were assessed using positron-emission tomography with [18F]-Florbet

Common olfactory ensheathing glial markers in the developing human olfactory system.

The in situ immunocytochemical properties of olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) have been well studied in several small to medium sized animal models including rats, mice, guinea pigs, cats and canines. However, we know very little about the antigenic characteristics of OECs in situ within the adult and developing human olfactory bulb and nerve roots. To address this gap in knowledge we undertook an immunocytochemical analysis of the 11-19 pcw human foetal olfactory system. Human foetal OECs in situ possessed important differences compared to rodents in the expression of key surface markers. P

Impaired odor identification in children with histories of heavy prenatal alcohol exposure.

Prenatal alcohol exposure can lead to behavioral and cognitive impairments across multiple domains. Many of the brain regions impacted by prenatal alcohol exposure are also linked with olfactory processing, and odor identification deficits have been documented in certain neurological disorders associated with these brain regions. As odor identification following prenatal alcohol exposure is not well studied, we compared odor identification in children with prenatal exposure to alcohol (AE) to typically developing controls (CON) (N = 16/group). It was hypothesized that children in the AE group

Kirrel3 is required for the coalescence of vomeronasal sensory neuron axons into glomeruli and for male-male aggression.

The accessory olfactory system controls social and sexual interactions in mice that are crucial for survival. Vomeronasal sensory neurons (VSNs) form synapses with dendrites of second order neurons in glomeruli of the accessory olfactory bulb (AOB). Axons of VSNs expressing the same vomeronasal receptor coalesce into multiple glomeruli within spatially conserved regions of the AOB. Here we examine the role of the Kirrel family of transmembrane proteins in the coalescence of VSN axons within the AOB. We find that Kirrel2 and Kirrel3 are differentially expressed in subpopulations of VSNs and tha

Antidepressant-like effects of kappa-opioid receptor antagonists in Wistar Kyoto rats.

The Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rat strain is a putative genetic model of comorbid depression and anxiety. Previous research showing increased kappa-opioid receptor (KOR) gene expression in the brains of WKY rats, combined with studies implicating the KOR in animal models of depression and anxiety, suggests that alterations in the KOR system could have a role in the WKY behavioral phenotype. Here, the effects of KOR antagonists in the forced swim test (FST) were compared with the WKY and the Sprague-Dawley (SD) rat strains. As previously reported, WKY rats showed more immobility behavior than SD rats.
