[Sonographic diagnosis of metastatic renal cell carcinoma to the head and neck region].

In the area of the head and neck metastases from distant primary tumours are rare in comparison to the common squamous cell carcinomas of the upper respiratory and digestive tract. Thus correct preoperative diagnosis may be difficult. Two cases with distant metastases of renal cell carcinoma to the head and neck region are presented in this report. In a 60-year-old male patient, diagnostic evaluation of unilateral epistaxis revealed a radioopacity of the maxillary sinus, six months after removal of a renal cell carcinoma. In the second case a slowly progressive indolent swelling of the left ne

Pediatric orbital emphysema and pneumocephalus following a compressed air gun injury: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Orbital emphysema and pneumocephalus rarely occur without associated skull fractures. Over the past decades, a few case reports have documented compressed air injuries as a rare cause of orbital emphysema and pneumocephalus in the absence of concomitant skull fractures leading to various injuries. CASE PRESENTATION: We illustrate here a 12-year-old boy who presented with painless left eye swelling following an accidental compressed air blast injury. On examination, he exhibited mild bilateral visual acuity impairment. The left eyelids, periorbital region, and cheeks were swollen,

Isolated neurosarcoidosis mimicking multifocal meningiomas: a diagnosis pitfall: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Neurosarcoidosis accounts for approximately 5% of the sarcoidosis, which develops exclusively in the nervous system and is always difficult to diagnose. We describe a rare case of isolated neurosarcoidosis mimicking as multifocal meningiomas. A 27-year-old male was admitted to our hospital with a history of unconsciousness and convulsion 1 month ago, which was suspected as a seizure. The results showed no abnormalities in complete blood count; serum electrolytes; erythrocyte sedimentation rate and ultrasonography of the liver, pancreas, spleen, kidney and parotid gland, and so on

Clinical values for abnormal ¹⁸F-FDG uptake in the head and neck region of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

PURPOSE: Fluorine 18-fluorodeoxyglucose ((18)F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) is used to identify index or second primary cancer (SP) of the head and neck (HN) through changes in (18)F-FDG uptake. However, both physiologic and abnormal lesions increase (18)F-FDG uptake. Therefore, we evaluated (18)F-FDG uptake in the HN region to determine clinical values of abnormal tracer uptake. METHODS: A prospective study approved by the institutional review board was conducted in 314 patients with newly diagnosed HN squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and informed consent w

Surgical anatomy of the infratemporal fossa: the styloid diaphragm revisited.

INTRODUCTION: The infratemporal fossa (ITF) gives passage to most major cerebral vessels and cranial nerves. Dissection of the ITF is essential in many of the lateral cranial base approaches and in exposure of the high cervical internal carotid artery (ICA). We reviewed the surgical anatomy of this region. METHODS: Direct foraminal measurements were made in seven dry skulls (14 sides), and the relationship of these foramina to each other and various landmarks were determined. Ten ITF dissections were performed using a preauricular subtemporal-infratemporal approach. Preliminary dissections of

Spindle cell rhabdomyosarcoma in adults.

The spindle cell variant of rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is uncommon and is most often encountered in the paratesticular region of children in whom it has a good prognosis. Only isolated cases in adulthood have been described. Sixteen cases of spindle cell RMS occurring in adults were retrieved from our files. Eleven patients were male and 5 were female. Patient age ranged from 18 to 79 years (median, 32 years). Tumor size varied from 1.5 to 35 cm (median, 6 cm). The head and neck region, including the oral cavity, parotid gland, nasopharynx, and nasal cavity, was the commonest affected area, accoun

Arteriovenous malformation of the mandible and parotid gland.

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) of the jaws are relatively rare, with fewer than 200 cases reported in the literature. Their real importance lies in their potential to result in exsanguination, which usually follows an unrelated treatment, such as tooth extraction, surgical intervention, puncture wound or blunt injury in involved areas, with the dentist unaware of the existence of the AVM. The present case illustrates an AVM in an 18-year-old female with swelling on the right side of the face. This case report is unique because although there was no history of bleeding episodes, thorough ex

Surgical treatment of mammalian bites----experience in the management of facial wounds by dog and cat bite in China.

Mammalian bites to the face challenges not only related to wound healing but also to aesthetic outcomes. This study aims to summarize 7 years of experience in treating mammalian bite wounds and propose a surgical approach for managing these wounds. From July 2016 to August 2023, 185 cases were treated and retrospectively evaluated. Variables collected included age, gender, anatomical location, wound features, and treatment management. The postoperative results were reviewed and analyzed. Of the 185 patients, 27.57% were under 18 years of age; with dog bites accounting for approximately 89.19%

Dose/Volume histogram patterns in Salivary Gland subvolumes influence xerostomia injury and recovery.

Xerostomia is a common consequence of radiotherapy in head and neck cancer. The objective was to compare the regional radiation dose distribution in patients that developed xerostomia within 6 months of radiotherapy and those recovered from xerostomia within 18 months post-radiotherapy. We developed a feature generation pipeline to extract dose volume histogram features from geometrically defined ipsilateral/contralateral parotid glands, submandibular glands, and oral cavity surrogates for each patient. Permutation tests with multiple comparisons were performed to assess the dose difference be

Supraclavicular artery island flap for head and neck oncologic reconstruction: indications, complications, and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The supraclavicular island flap has been used successfully for difficult facial reconstruction cases, providing acceptable results without using microsurgical techniques. The authors use this regional flap in reconstructing various head and neck oncologic defects that normally require traditional regional or free flaps to repair surgical wounds. METHODS: A pedicled supraclavicular artery flap was used to reconstruct head/neck oncologic defects. Complications and functional outcomes were assessed. RESULTS: Head and neck oncologic patients underwent tumor resection followed by imme

The role of functional imaging in the diagnosis and management of late normal tissue injury.

Normal tissue injury after radiation therapy (RT) can be defined based on either clinical symptoms or laboratory/radiologic tests. In the research setting, functional imaging (eg, single-photon emission computed tomography [SPECT], positron-emission tomography [PET], and magnetic resonance imaging [MRI]) is useful because it provides objective quantitative data such as metabolic activity, perfusion, and soft-tissue contrast within tissues and organs. For RT-induced lung, heart, and parotid gland injury, pre- and post-RT SPECT images can be compared with the dose- and volume-dependent nature of

PACAP-27 and PACAP-38: vascular effects in the eye and some other tissues in the rabbit.

The effects of pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP) on regional blood flow in the eye and other tissues were investigated in albino rabbits. Direct determination of the flow from a cannulated vortex vein, in animals pretreated with a vasopressin receptor antagonist, showed that i.v. infusion of either PACAP-27 or PACAP-38 caused a dose-dependent (0.08-0.64 pmol/kg per min) decrease in the uveal vascular resistance. Regional blood flow was determined, with radioactive microspheres, during i.v. infusion of PACAP-27 or PACAP-38 (0.64 pmol/kg per min) in rabbits pretreated wi

Comparison of the eighth edition of the TNM and Brigham Women's Hospital staging systems for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck: a six-year review.

This study was undertaken with the aim to compare the T stages in a series of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) patients using both the eighth edition of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) TNM Classification of Malignant Tumours (TNM8) and Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) staging systems. This would allow comparison of the two to determine suitability with regards to T stage and the effect on local recurrence and nodal disease. This was a six-year retrospective cohort study of patients with primary invasive cSCC of the head and neck who were diagnosed and treated at Wes

Natural lymphatic ("atypical") actinobacillosis in cattle caused by Actinobacillus lignieresii.

Bovine actinobacillosis is typically characterized by pyogranulomatous glossitis (wooden tongue). The involvement of other tissues, generally the skin or lymph nodes, has been regarded as atypical or cutaneous. We describe herein 2 outbreaks of actinobacillosis affecting primarily the lymph nodes of the head and neck. The disease affected 40 of 540 lactating cows in a dairy herd, and 5 of 335 two-y-old steers in a beef herd. Multiple or single, occasionally ulcerated nodules were observed in the region of the mandible, neck, and shoulder, including the parotid, submandibular, retropharyngeal,
