Dynamic Management of NOx and SO2 Emissions in the Texas and Mid-Atlantic Electric Power Systems and Implications for Air Quality.

Cap and trade programs have historically been designed to achieve annual or seasonal reductions in emissions of nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide from power plants. Emissions reductions may not be temporally coincident with meteorological conditions conducive to the formation of peak ozone and fine particulate matter concentrations. Integrated power system and air quality modeling methods were developed to evaluate time-differentiated emissions price signals on high ozone days in the Mid-Atlantic portion of the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland (PJM) Interconnection and Electric Reliability Co…

Chronic exposure to outdoor air pollution and lung function in adults.

BACKGROUND: The extent to which chronic exposure to outdoor air pollutants influences lung function in adults is unclear. The aim of this study was to measure the association between chronic exposure to outdoor air pollutants and adult lung function. METHODS: The relationship between measures of lung function (forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV(1)) and FEV(1) as a percentage of forced vital capacity (FVC)) and average exposure to particulate matter <10 microm in diameter, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and ozone was examined in four representative cross-sectional surveys of the English po…

Acute effects of a winter air pollution episode on pulmonary function and respiratory symptoms of children.

The acute respiratory effects of a wintertime air pollution episode were studied in a general population sample of 112 children who were 7-12 y of age and who lived in a nonurban community. Spirometry was performed on 6 d, with a fixed interval of 3 wk between successive tests. During an air pollution episode, an additional pulmonary function test was made. Acute respiratory symptoms of the children were noted in a diary. Ambient concentrations of sulfur dioxide, black smoke, particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than 10 microns, and nitrogen dioxide were considered as exposure …

Behaviour of Hg species in a microtidal deltaic system: the Isonzo River mouth (northern Adriatic Sea).

Mercury species in the highly stratified water column of the Isonzo River mouth (northern Adriatic Sea) were investigated in February, May and August 2002 (low-normal fluvial discharge). Total, dissolved and particulate mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were measured and their concentrations were related to physico-chemical parameters in terms of temperature, salinity, turbidity, O(2) concentrations and total suspended matter (TSM) as well as particulate organic carbon (POC) content. Particulate Hg and MeHg are well correlated to medium-fine silty suspended sediment and organic matter, res

Regionalization of the Mortality Risk from Cardiomyopathy and Respiratory Diseases Based on the Maximum Entropy Model.

This research presents a time-series study in one of the most polluted regions in Mexico, the southern part of the Mezquital Valley. Three mortality causes related to areas highly contaminated by industrial activities were considered to carry out this model, namely, ischemic cardiomyopathy, mesothelioma, and pneumoconiosis. The pollutant exposure factors used in the maximum entropy modeling were distance to rivers, distance to industries, particulate matter less than 2.5 microns (PM < 2.5 µm), and the digital elevation model (DEM). A model that expresses the presence of the disease by areas of…

[Effects of air pollution on human health and their importance in Mexico City].

The impact of air pollution on human health is a complicated problem. In this review, we describe the main health effects of exposure to ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, lead and particulate matter. Geographical characteristics of the metropolitan area of Mexico City that favor pollutant persistence with adverse effects on the population are described; the use of the Indice Metropolitano de la Calidad del Aire (IMECA), current norms, and present programs to diminish this problem are discussed. Evidence shows that through these actions, air quality has improved. However…

Air pollution and health.

The health effects of air pollution have been subject to intense study in recent years. Exposure to pollutants such as airborne particulate matter and ozone has been associated with increases in mortality and hospital admissions due to respiratory and cardiovascular disease. These effects have been found in short-term studies, which relate day-to-day variations in air pollution and health, and long-term studies, which have followed cohorts of exposed individuals over time. Effects have been seen at very low levels of exposure, and it is unclear whether a threshold concentration exists for part…

Source apportionment of ambient PM2.5 in an industrialized city using dispersion-normalized, multi-time resolution factor analyses.

Ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) data were collected in the lower City of Hamilton, Ontario to apportion the sources of this pollutant over an 18-month period. Hamilton has complex topographical features that may result in worsened air pollution within the lower city, thus, dispersion-normalized, multi-time resolution factor analysis (DN-MT-FA) was used to identify and quantify contributions of factors in a manner that reduced the influence of local meteorology. These factors were secondary organic aerosols type 1 (SOA_1), particulate nitrate (pNO3), particulate sulphate (pSO4), primary…

Shifting PM2.5 Control from Mass to Toxicity for Health Equity Worldwide.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) remains the leading cause of premature deaths, despite declining mass concentrations of PM2.5 in the atmosphere. Age-standardized attributable death rates demonstrated divergent trends worldwide over the past decade, indicating that the uniform toxicity assumption underlying current regulations warrants re-examination. In this perspective, we synthesize recent advances in toxicological evaluation, epidemiological research, and modeling studies to advocate for a toxicity-based control as a future promising option. Incomplete combustion sources, especially residen…

High-efficiency respiratory protection and intelligent monitoring by nanopatterning of electroactive poly(lactic acid) nanofibers.

The advent of multifunctional nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) has led to the development of next-generation air filters that are ready to intercept fine particulate matters (PMs) and monitor the respiratory diseases. However, it is still challenging to fabricate biodegradable NFMs featuring the desirable combination of high filtration efficiencies, low air resistance, and intelligent real-time monitoring. Herein, a hierarchical nanopatterning approach was proposed to functionalize the stereocomplexed poly(lactic acid) (PLA) (SC-PLA) nanofibers via the combined electrospinning of SC-PLA and electr…

Discrepant Global Surface Ozone Responses to Emission- and Heatwave-Induced Regime Shifts.

Heatwaves have substantial but poorly quantified impacts on surface ozone photochemical regimes. As heatwaves of increasing severity occur, … n reductions in East Asia decreased the ozone formation sensitivity to formaldehyde (HCHO) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5), counteracting the adverse high-temperature effect. Quantified results reveal that heatwaves increased the sensitivity of ozone to HCHO and PM2.5, enhancing their positive contributions and causing increased ozone trends across most regions, …

Automatic weighing system vs. manual weighing precision comparison in PM-loaded filter measurements under different humidity conditions.

Currently, there is a lack of research directly comparing the precision of automatic weighing systems and manual weighing in the context of particulate matter (PM) filter equilibration and measurements under different humidity conditions. During experimental measurements, three different types of PM-loaded filters were weighed using manual and automatic balances. During manual weighing, every filter was weighed twice in three different relative humidity conditions. The same procedure was done using an automated weighing system. In most cases, it was found that under relative humidities in the …

Efficient capture of airborne PM by nanotubular conjugated microporous polymers based filters under harsh conditions.

The exploitation of high-performance filters which can capture and remove airborne particulate matter (PM) in harsh conditions is greatly important to limit the serious effect of PM on human health. Herein, we demonstrate a simple approach for the creation of robust and hierarchically porous filters based on conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) nanotubes for efficient PM capture. Taking advantage of their inherently superhydrophobic wettability, the CMPs-based filters possess high filtration efficiency of higher than 99.4% for PM0.3 and 99.9% for PM2.5 and PM10, respectively, even in high hu…

Surface bound radicals, char yield and particulate size from the burning of tobacco cigarette.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco smoke is a toxic gas-phase cocktail consisting of a broad range of organics, and free radical intermediates. The formation of smoke from a burning cigarette depends on a series of mechanisms, including generation of products by pyrolysis and combustion, aerosol formation, and physical mass transfer processes. METHODS: The current study simulates the deposition of particulate matter on the human lung surface by trapping the tobacco smoke particulates in situ on silica gel. To mimic this phenomenon, the cigarette was smoked directly on siliga gel. The surface morphology of s…

Estimating Air Pollution in Operation Rooms Generated from Cautery, Drills, and Other Equipment, Utilizing a Particulate Counter and Gas Analyzer.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution, especially indoor air pollution, is increasingly recognized as a worldwide hazard that reduces life expectancy. Pollution caused by equipment such as surgical cautery is not just a nuisance but a workplace hazard that exposes the staff to respirable particulate matter and toxic chemical agents. It has not yet received much recognition in India, nor have mitigating measures like smoke evacuators and dedicated scavenging systems become prevalent. METHODS: We aimed to do a prospective observational study of the extent of this hazard in the operation rooms in our tertia…
