Human faces look more similar to each other when they are presented upside-down, leading to an increase of error rates and response times during individual face discrimination tasks. Here we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to test the hypothesis that this perceived similarity leads to a lower recovery from identity adaptation for inverted faces than for upright faces in face-sensitive areas of the occipito-temporal cortex. Ten subjects were presented with blocks of upright and inverted faces, with the same face identity repeated consecutively in half of the blocks, and differ

PURPOSE: To investigate long-term structural and functional progression of untreated and treated glaucoma suspects (UGS and TGS).
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of serial steady-state pattern electroretinogram (PERG), mean retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT), and standard automated perimetry mean deviation (SAP-MD) in UGS (N = 20) and TGS (N = 18). Outcome measures were the rates of change (linear regression slopes) of PERG amplitude, PERG phase, mean RNFLT, and SAP-MD over 9.8 ± 1.3 years (15.6 ± 4.2 visits).
RESULTS: The number of patients with significant (P < 0.05) progression s

Brain regions that process affect are strongly connected with visual regions, but the functional consequences of this structural organization have been relatively unexplored. How does the momentary affect of an observer influence perception? We induced either pleasant or unpleasant affect in participants and then recorded their neural activity using magnetoencephalography while they completed an object recognition task. We hypothesized, and found, that affect influenced the speed of object recognition by modulating the speed and amplitude of evoked responses in occipitotemporal cortex and regi

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), a few preliminary functional MR (fMR) imaging studies of the visual cortex reveal information about magnitude differences between healthy individuals and patients with MS at only a single luminance level. We therefore investigated whether varying luminance contrast levels can help uncover subtle changes in fMR imaging characteristics of the visual cortex in healthy volunteers and patients with MS.
METHODS: Blood oxygenation level-dependent fMR imaging signal changes in the primary visual cortex were examined as a function of lu

An attempt was made to clarify whether the site of postchiasmal lesions affects subjective perception of homonymous visual field defects during stimulation with flickering random dot patterns (white noise-field). Out of 56 patients with homonymous hemianopia, 38 (68%) perceived scotomata in this situation, but 18 (32%) discerned none at all. Neuroradiologic superposition of cerebral lesions detected by computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed that nearly all patients who perceived their scotomata had lesions involving the primary visual cortex or the perigeniculate r

Responses to targets are often slower when distractors are incongruent rather than congruent with the required response. Past research indicates that alerting cues can magnify this congruency effect, such that responses are faster when the target is cued, but distractors have a greater negative influence. This alerting-congruency interaction is reliably found in the arrow-version of Eriksen's flanker task but not in the Stroop task, leading some to suggest that the interaction only occurs with stimuli that have pre-existing directional associations. The current experiments test the possibility

Multiple-object tracking (MOT) involves monitoring positions of multiple independent targets as they move among distractors. Standard MOT involves identical items but Erlikhman et al. (2013) showed better performance when targets and distractors differed in colour or shape. They attributed this to automatic featural grouping processes that facilitated MOT when they kept targets and distractors distinct, which interfered otherwise. However, if featural grouping is fully automatic, grouping benefits should disappear in displays that give rise to competing groupings (i.e., colour vs. shape). In t

This study examined Alpha and Theta oscillations in picture-naming retrieval of common objects, famous people and well-known places to investigate the distinct memory processes involved in retrieving these semantic categories. Thirty-two adults participated in a picture-naming task manipulating the Objects, Peopleand Places categories. EEG recordings were obtained during the entire task. Morlet wavelets were extracted for each band and condition across different time-bins. The behavioural results indicated lower naming precision for People, although naming Places was still more challenging tha

The representational-hierarchical account of object processing characterizes the perirhinal cortex (PRC) as supporting conjunctive representations of object features, such that damage or age-related decline in the PRC impairs discrimination between complex object with overlapping features. In older adults, gray matter volume of the anterolateral entorhinal cortex (alERC), a PRC-adjacent region, correlated with object discrimination based on configural (spatial) arrangements of features. However, this relationship has not yet been examined with functional activation or systematically investigat

Research on numerical cognition suggests that magnitude processing supports both distance-sensitive comparison and directional spatial mapping. Whether real-world object size shows a similar profile, however, remains unclear. The present study examined this question across two preregistered experiments using task contexts adapted from paradigms in the numerical domain. In Experiment 1, participants judged which of two simultaneously presented objects was smaller or larger in real-world size. An arrangement-based compatibility pattern emerged in the small-object task but not in the large-object

The visual world is complex; however, we still access its richness despite computational limits in our visual system. Ensemble perception overcomes this bottleneck by extracting statistics, such as the mean, standard deviation, or other distributional characteristics, of feature sets like orientations or facial expressions, without processing each object individually. The role of attention in ensemble processing is debated: can we extract statistical information about a set when we do not attend to it? To address this question, we used the Posner cueing paradigm in which participants (N = 30,

A crucial ability of our cognition is the perception of objects and their motions. We can perceive objects as moving by connecting them across space and time. This is possible even when the objects are not present continuously, as in the case of apparent motion displays like the Ternus display, consisting of two sets of stimuli, shifted to the left or right, separated by a variable inter-stimulus interval (ISI). This is an ambiguous display, which can be perceived as both stimuli moving uniformly to the right (group motion) or one stimulus moving across the stationary center stimulus (element

Reading fluency deficits in schizophrenia (Sz) have been attributed to dysfunction in both lower-level, oculomotor processing and higher-level, lexical processing, according to the two-hit deficit model. Given that prior work examining reading deficits in individuals with Sz has primarily focused on single-line and single-word reading tasks, eye movements that are unique to passage reading, such as return-sweep saccades, have not yet been examined in Sz. Return-sweep saccades are large eye movements that are made when readers move from the end of one line to the beginning of the next line duri

This study investigated threat-related attention biases using a new visual search paradigm with eye tracking, which allows for measuring attentional disengagement in isolation. This is crucial as previous studies have been unable to distinguish between engagement, disengagement, and behavioral freezing. Thirty-three participants (Mage = 28.75 years, SD = 8.98; 21 women) with self-reported specific phobia (spiders, snakes, and pointed objects) and their matched controls (Mage = 28.38 years, SD = 8.66; 21 women) took part in the experiment. The participants were instructed to initially focus on

Category variability or diversity is an important factor influencing generalisation. However, expectations of category variability may not only depend on the variability of encountered category members, but may also be shaped by prior experiences with similar categories. In this study, we investigated whether we could influence category generalisation by inducing different category representations in an A/Non-A categorisation task: Participants either learned about a homogeneous category Non-A or a diverse category Non-A during a priming phase. To better understand the transfer process, we var

Human vision prioritizes emotional stimuli. This is reflected in stronger electrocortical activation in response to emotional than neutral stimuli, measurable on the surface of the head. Feedback projections from brain structures deep within the medial temporal lobes (mTLs), in particular the amygdala, are thought to give rise to this phenomenon, although causal evidence is rare. Given the many pathways involved in visual processing, the influence of mTL structures could be restricted to specific time windows. Therefore, we delineate the temporal dynamics of the impact of right mTL structures

Camouflage patterns prevent detection and/or recognition by matching the background, disrupting edges, or mimicking particular background features. In variable habitats, however, a single pattern cannot match all available sites all of the time, and efficacy may therefore be reduced. Active color change provides an alternative where coloration can be altered to match local conditions, but again efficacy may be limited by the speed of change and range of patterns available. Transparency, on the other hand, creates high-fidelity camouflage that changes instantaneously to match any substrate but

Is sentence structure processed by the same neural and cognitive resources that are recruited for processing word meanings, or do structure and meaning rely on distinct resources? Linguistic theorizing and much behavioral evidence suggest tight integration between lexico-semantic and syntactic representations and processing. However, most current proposals of the neural architecture of language continue to postulate a distinction between the two. One of the earlier and most cited pieces of neuroimaging evidence in favor of this dissociation comes from a paper by Dapretto and Bookheimer (1999).

We describe a patient with acute herpes simplex encephalitis with left-hemispheric hippocampal, parahippocampal and insular lesions. Although prototypic language areas were unaffected, the patient suffered from an inability to name objects or animals displayed on pictures. This deficit was transient and gradually disappeared 8 weeks after the initial diagnosis. Our findings are in line with a previous report showing similar deficits in a patient with a comparable lesion pattern and support the hypothesis that left insular lesions can produce severe naming deficits. Using FDG-PET we ruled out t

Working memory (WM) activity is not as stationary or sustained as previously thought. There are brief bursts of gamma (~50-120 Hz) and beta (~20-35 Hz) oscillations, the former linked to stimulus information in spiking. We examined these dynamics in relation to readout and control mechanisms of WM. Monkeys held sequences of two objects in WM to match to subsequent sequences. Changes in beta and gamma bursting suggested their distinct roles. In anticipation of having to use an object for the match decision, there was an increase in gamma and spiking information about that object and reduced bet
