Acceptability of oral health care: a scoping review of reviews to inform framework development.

BACKGROUND: Canada launched the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) in 2023 to improve access by reducing cost barriers. Data from September 2025 indicate that only about half of enrollees had accessed services, highlighting that addressing affordability alone may not be sufficient to facilitate uptake. Among the multiple dimensions of access, acceptability has been the least explored in oral health, despite its influence on whether patients seek care and providers deliver it. This review synthesized acceptability-related barriers and facilitators from patient and provider perspectives to assess

Patient-centred understanding of quality of life, symptoms, health equity in cystic fibrosis (PULSE-CF): study protocol for an observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a progressive, life-limiting condition affecting more than 160 000 people worldwide. Despite major therapeutic advances that have extended life expectancy, people living with CF continue to experience substantial physical, emotional and social symptom burdens that impair quality of life (QOL). Symptoms in CF often co-occur, indicating the presence of specific symptom clustering. Different clusters of co-occurring symptoms may reflect distinct underlying biological mechanisms influenced by social determinants of health. This study aims to identify clusters

Autism and the Oral Microbiome: A Systematic Review of Host-microbial Interactions and Diversity.

BackgroundEmerging evidence suggests a link between the oral microbiome and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by social and behavioural impairments. The vast microbial reservoirs in the gut complement those of the oral cavity, suggesting a potential oral-gut-brain axis that may influence ASD and perhaps other neurological diseases, such as Parkinson's syndrome and Alzheimer's disease. For the first time, this systematic review synthesises the current knowledge of oral microbiome composition, diversity, and functionality in ASD and its potential diagno

Identification of personal factors that influence engagement in cardiac rehabilitation and interventions targeting personal factors: A scoping review protocol.

Cardiac rehabilitation effectively reduces mortality and enhances the quality of life for individuals with cardiovascular disease. Despite that, individuals' engagement in cardiac rehabilitation remains low. Considering the significant contributions of individuals' self-management of cardiovascular disease to their progress, it is essential to understand the personal factors that influence engagement in cardiac rehabilitation. This scoping review aims to identify and map personal factors that influence cardiac rehabilitation engagement with a specific focus on the subjective experiential dimen

Commodified upbringings: A narrative review on commercial determinants of child and adolescent mental health.

INTRODUCTION: The mental health of children and adolescents has become a major global health concern, with increasing diagnoses and use of psychotropic drugs. The commercial determinants of health (CDoH) paradigm links economic and social forces to health outcomes. Highlighting the influence of industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, technology, social media, gambling, alcohol, tobacco and pornography on the mental health of this population is crucial. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This narrative review synthesises existing literature on the impact of commercial determinants on child and adolescen

Airway Epithelium Respiratory Illnesses and Allergy (AERIAL) birth cohort: study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent wheezing disorders including asthma are complex and heterogeneous diseases that affect up to 30% of all children, contributing to a major burden on children, their families, and global healthcare systems. It is now recognized that a dysfunctional airway epithelium plays a central role in the pathogenesis of recurrent wheeze, although the underlying mechanisms are still not fully understood. This prospective birth cohort aims to bridge this knowledge gap by investigating the influence of intrinsic epithelial dysfunction on the risk for developing respiratory disorders an

Effect of chrono-moxibustion and its influence on circadian rhythm for rheumatoid arthritis: A study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic disease which is characterized by a circadian variation of key clinical symptoms and findings, with prominent joint swelling, stiffness and pain occurring in the early morning and light clinical symptoms during the day. Chrono-moxibustion is carried out at different time, which could result in dissimilar therapeutic effects. However, its efficacy has seldom been systematically demonstrated and few studies have reported that Chrono-moxibustion may regulate the circadian rhythm of RA. We therefore designed a randomized trial to explore the effec

Influence of sulfur amendments on heavy metals phytoextraction from agricultural contaminated soils: A meta-analysis.

Heavy metal pollution is becoming recurrent and threatens biota biosafety in many agricultural fields. Diverse solutions explore the application of amendments to enable remediation. Sulfur represents a nonmetallic chemical element that actively affects heavy metals phytoextraction, and promotes and alternatively mitigates soil functions. In this study, we conduct a meta-analysis to synthesize the current knowledge on the influence of sulfur amendments on plants heavy metals uptake from contaminated soil media. Random-effects model was used to summarize effect sizes from 524 data points extract

Leveraging incentives to increase HIV testing uptake among men: qualitative insights from rural Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have explored how economic incentives influence behavioral outcomes. This study aimed to identify pathways of action … rpersonal barriers included anticipated stigma/fear of disclosure, social obligations, and negative peer influences. Providing incentives in public settings provided "social proof" that prizes could be won, and facilitated social support and positive norms by promoting testing with trusted others. Incentives had little influence when men appraised prize values t …

Theoretical models of vaccination decisi … show a significant direct linear relationship with vaccine utility. This supports the existence of peer influence (more incentivized as more and more vaccinate), rather than free-riding on herd immunity. Evidence of social network influence on multiple HIV risk behaviors and normative beliefs among young Tanzanian men.

Research on network-level influences on HIV risk behaviors among young men in sub-Saharan Africa is severely lacking. One significant gap in the literature that may provide direction for future research with this population is understanding the degree to which various HIV risk behaviors and normative beliefs cluster within men's social networks. Such research may help us understand which HIV-related norms and behaviors have the greatest potential to be changed through social influence. Additionally, few network-based studies have described the structure of social networks of young men in sub-S

A review of the current state of the male circumcision literature.

INTRODUCTION: Male circumcision is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures worldwide and a subject that has been the center of considerable debate. Recently, the American Association of Pediatrics released a statement affirming that the medical benefits of neonatal circumcision outweigh the risks. At present, however, the majority of the literature on circumcision is based on research that is not necessarily applicable to North American populations, as it fails to take into account factors likely to influence the interpretability and applicability of the results. AIMS: The purp

Association between dairy consumption and Parkinson's disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with no cure and rising global prevalence. Genetic, environmental, and dietary factors may influence risk. Dairy intake, may influence risk through gut microbiome changes and alpha-synuclein spread along the gut-brain axis, though epidemiological evidence is mixed. This meta-analysis examines the association between dairy consumption and PD risk in observational studies. STUDY DESIGN: This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of published literature. METHODS: PubMed and EMBASE were searched for origina

Knowledge, perceived harms and reasons for use of disposable electronic cigarettes among youth: a qualitative study in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Disposable electronic cigarettes (DECs) have rapidly gained popularity among adolescents and young adults (AYAs), raising public health concerns related to nicotine dependence, exposure to potentially harmful substances and environmental burden. While motivations for e-cigarette use have been explored, little is known about how AYAs perceive and use DECs, in particular within a changing regulatory context such as Switzerland. OBJECTIVES: This qualitative study explored AYA's knowledge, perceived harms and reasons for DEC use through a developmental lens, to better understand vulne

Deciphering Bax Dynamics: Regulation, Retrotranslocation, and Mitochondrial Interplay in the Commitment to Apoptosis: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: The apoptotic pathway mediated by mitochondria depends on the activation of pro-apoptotic Bcl-2 proteins Bax and Bak. When they permeabilize the outer mitochondrial membrane (OMM), mitochondrial dysfunction occurs, leading to caspase activation. A recent study proposed that Bax accumulation on mitochondria increases apoptotic susceptibility, with adhesion-initiated signals regulating Bax. When adhesion signaling is inhibited, Bax translocates to the OMM, undergoes conformational change, and forms complexes that create pores. Although MOMP is well studied, mechanisms regulating Bax

Leveling up immunization: a systematic review of gamification interventions to improve Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine uptake.

BACKGROUND: HPV vaccine is effective in preventing cervical cancer in adolescents and young adults. Despite its proven effectiveness, vaccination rates remain suboptimal due to several barriers, such as insufficient knowledge and vaccine hesitancy. Gamification has emerged as an effective strategy for getting people involved and altering their health-related behaviors. To date, there are no literature-based systematic reviews on the effectiveness of gamification in leveling up HPV immunization and knowledge among adolescents or young adults. This systematic review seeks to evaluate the impact
