Racing justice: Mass incarceration and perceptions of courts.

This article examines how the emergence of mass incarceration in the United States affected public perceptions of its judicial institutions. Analyses of General Social Survey data collected between 1974 and 2018 indicate that the rising incarceration rate was associated with distinctive changes to Blacks' and Whites' views of courts. As the incarceration rate increased, Blacks' confidence in courts and the legal system fell while Whites' confidence grew. The rising incarceration rate was also associated with a growing Black-White fissure in confidence in the Supreme Court. Finally, although Bl…

Investigating the Effects of Stealthing Justifications on Rape Perceptions.

The current research aimed to investigate justifications behind the perception of stealthing-the act of nonconsensual condom removal in previously consented intercourse. Based upon an article by Brodsky that conducted real-life interviews of stealthing activities, justifications for the act were experimentally manipulated after the participants read a scenario involving a depiction of stealthing. A four (Justification: Control, Instinct, Right, Pleasure) × two (Participant Gender: female, male) multivariate analysis on the assessment of various criminality, morality, harm, blame/responsibility…

Perceptions and Preferences of Laypersons in the Management of Positional Plagiocephaly.

BACKGROUND: Uncertain clinical evidence for treating positional plagiocephaly, especially with helmet therapy, creates difficulties in counseling parents of patients. METHODS: Adult laypersons were recruited through crowdsourcing to view digitally-modified images of normal, mildly, moderately, or severely plagiocephalic infant heads. Participants provided demographic information and rated the infant's head shape and potential related social …

Assessing patient perceptions of cytomegalovirus infection in pregnancy.

Pregnant women impacted by cytomegalovirus (CMV) make clinical decisions despite uncertain outcomes. Intolerance of uncertainty score (IUS) is a validated measure of tendency for individuals to find unacceptable that a negative event might occur. We investigated patient perceptions of CMV infection during pregnancy and correlated IUS and knowledge with decision-making. Electronic questionnaire was sent to women from July to August 2017. The questionnaire evaluated knowledge of CMV, IUS, and responses regarding management to three clinical scenarios with escalating risk of CMV including choices…

Assessing LGBT People's Perceptions of Police Legitimacy.

Although lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people have achieved increased acceptance and access to social institutions in recent years, they have continued to be confronted with persistent homophobic attitudes, including from U.S. law enforcement personnel. Police culture often fosters these beliefs, and consequently results in the under-policing of LGBT citizens when victimized, but over-policing in places of leisure. This relationship is exacerbated when considering the intersectional effect of gender and sexual orientation, undoubtedly impacting legitimacy perceptions due to pe…

Public Recognition and Perceptions of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Previous research has indicated that the public's knowledge on obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is poor. Public understanding and perception of OCD may be one contributor to this issue. Given that mental health literacy is an important first step for those to receive the appropriate care, we sought to understand more about the public's awareness and perceptions of OCD. Data regarding knowledge of OCD were collected through a New York statewide telephone survey (N = 806). Results indicated that those who had never heard of OCD were more likely to be ethnic minorities, have a lower income, an…

The Perception of Time Is Underestimated in Adolescents With Anorexia Nervosa.

Research has revealed reduced temporal discounting (i.e., increased capacity to delay reward) and altered interoceptive awareness in anorexia nervosa (AN). In line with the research linking temporal underestimation with a reduced tendency to devalue a reward and reduced interoceptive awareness, we tested the hypothesis that time duration might be underestimated in AN. Our findings revealed that patients with AN displayed lower timing accuracy in the form of timing underestimation compared with controls. These results were not predicted by clinical, demographic factors, attention, and working m

Adults' Perceptions of Children's Referentially Ambiguous Responses.

The present study examined adults' (N = 295) interpretations of child witnesses' referentially ambiguous "yes" and "no" responses to "Do You Know/Remember (DYK/R) if/whether" questions (e.g., "Do you know if it was blue?"). Participants were presented with transcripts from child sexual abuse cases modified based on question format (DYK/R vs. Direct) and child response type (Yes, No, I don't know) in a between subjects design. We assessed whether adults recognized that children's ambiguous responses were unclear, and if not, how they were interpreting children's responses compared to the contro

Letters of Recommendation: Association with Interviewers' Perceptions and Preferences.

Objective Letters of recommendation (LORs) are an inescapable aspect of the application process. Standardized LORs (SLORs) have been develop … ed more information provided in NLORs versus faster read time with SLORs. Conclusions Interviewers' perceptions of applicants based on LORs and face-to-face interviews were comparable across LOR types over the last 5 years. For many reasons, the general utility of the LOR remains questionable, and the continued need for it should be critically assessed.

Students' Perceptions of Trigger Warnings in Medical Education.

Medical education includes numerous subjects frequently identified as triggers, such as abuse, rape, self-injurious behaviors, eating disorders, drug and alcohol addiction, and suicide. Thus, exploring medical students' perceptions of trigger warnings may provide a valuable perspective on the use of these warnings in higher education. APPROACH: As part of a larger descriptive, cross-sectional survey study on medical education, we assessed 1st- …

Systemic Sclerosis and Perceptions of Quality in Primary Care.

BACKGROUND: Among patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc), early recognition of potentially life-threatening organ involvement is critical. Because prompt recognition of early signs of organ involvement can dramatically alter a patient׳s outcome, it is crucial that patients and primary care providers (PCPs) recognize these symptoms. We conducted a survey of patients with SSc regarding their perceptions of the quality of their primary care, and whether or not they perceive the quality of their primary care to be impaired by their scleroderma diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A mail survey was s…
