During pregnancy, the maternal hemostatic system undergoes significant changes to support placental angiogenesis, maintain fetal blood flow, and ensure safe delivery. This study investigates the dysregulation of hemostasis in placental insufficiency and explores potential markers for diagnosing and managing this gestational complication. Thromboelastography, coagulation and fibrinolysis functional assays, ELISA, and immunoblotting were employed to assess hemostasis dysregulation in placental dysfunction of two cohorts of pregnant women with placental dysfunction and healthy controls. Thromboel

Preeclampsia is a multifaceted pregnancy-associated hypertensive disorder that poses a major threat to maternal and fetal health. Though the etiology is not fully understood, syncytiotrophoblast stress is postulated to be a major driver of maternal symptomology. We previously demonstrated that regulator of G protein signaling-2 (RGS2) expression decreases in human preeclamptic placenta and has a transcriptional dependence on histone deacetylase 9 (HDAC9) in trophoblast cells. Furthermore, experimental reductions of Rgs2 expression in the mouse fetoplacental unit are sufficient to induce preecl

Objective: Global utilization of assisted reproductive technology (ART) is increasing; however, it is associated with adverse perinatal outcomes. Placental and umbilical cord abnormalities contribute significantly to these negative outcomes. However, it remains unclear whether ART independently increases the risk of such abnormalities. This study aimed to investigate the association between ART and key umbilico-placental abnormalities, after adjustment for confounders. Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, singleton pregnancies receiving routine antenatal care (January 2015 to June 2024

BACKGROUND: Stillbirth evaluation plays a crucial role in the management of future pregnancies, as it can help identify risk factors that may recur. Additionally, it may provide a definitive cause of death, helping bring closure to the family and guiding both emotional healing and clinical care.
AIM: To study various pathological findings of the placenta and umbilical cord in cases of stillbirths.
PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: Fifty women suffering stillbirths occurring at ≥ 24 weeks of gestation were included in the study. Demographic details, past obstetric history, and antenatal history of th

Presently, societal guidelines differ regarding evaluation and management of variations in placental cord insertion (PCI). This variation may in part be secondary to inconsistency in reported risk associated with marginal and velamentous cord insertion (VCI). The objective of this study is to compare perinatal outcomes based on PCI site in pregnancies at risks for fetal growth disorders. This was a secondary analysis of singletons with growth assessment between 26 and 36 weeks of gestation. Fetuses with chromosomal or congenital malformations were excluded. The primary outcomes studied were neo

An ultrasound investigation of a 28-year-old woman in the second trimester of her second pregnancy was suggestive of molar changes of placenta. Sonographically, the placenta had two distinct appearances - a normal portion and an area of heterogeneous appearance with a cystic area. It covered the internal os. There was a single live foetus. The management of this unique entity was marked by extensive workup of the differentials, testing and counselling. The pregnancy was continued, but antepartum haemorrhage resulted at 31 weeks, requiring an emergency cesarean delivery. Postpartum haemorrhage

Introduction: Placental site nodules (PSNs) are uncommon lesions typically found in uterine specimens and extremely rarely in extrauterine locations such as the fallopian tubes. PSNs are usually discovered incidentally and result from prior implantation sites. This case report describes an unexpected PSN found in a fallopian tube during a cesarean section with concurrent tubal sterilization. Case Presentation: A 38-year-old multiparous woman (gravida 4, para 2) with a previous vaginal delivery underwent tubal sterilization during a cesarean section. The surgical procedure was uneventful, with

Prenatal exposure to maternal psychological stress is associated with increased risk for adverse birth and child health outcomes. Accumulating evidence suggests that preconceptional maternal stress may also be transmitted intergenerationally to negatively impact offspring. However, understanding of mechanisms linking these exposures to offspring outcomes, particularly those related to placenta, is limited. Using RNA sequencing, we identified placental transcriptomic signatures associated with maternal prenatal stressful life events (SLEs) and childhood traumatic events (CTEs) in 1 029 mother-c

While the placenta regulates nutritional exchange between mother and fetus, Yu et al. reveal that human placental development is itself nutrient-sensitive. They elucidate entwined metabolic and epigenetic transitions driving syncytialization and pinpoint a requirement for the metabolite acetyl-CoA, which is sensitive to glucose metabolism.

Infants are vulnerable to infections owing to a limited ability to mount a humoral immune response and their tolerogenic immune phenotype, which has impeded the success of newborn vaccination. Transplacental transfer of IgG from mother to fetus provides crucial protection in the first weeks of life, and maternal immunization has recently been implemented as a public health strategy to protect newborns against serious infections. Despite their early success, current maternal vaccines do not provide comparable protection across pregnancies with varying gestational lengths and placental and mater

BACKGROUND: Various immune mediators have a role in the progression of periodontitis. Placental Growth Factor (PLGF) is important during pregnancy and also is involved in the pathology of several diseases. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate salivary PLGF in health and periodontitis that seemingly has not been reported earlier.
METHODS: Fifty participants were grouped as healthy and periodontitis patients. Clinical history, periodontal parameters [Plaque Index (PI), Gingival Index (GI), probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), bleeding on probing (BoP)] were recorded; saliv

Maternal exposure to microplastics and nanoplastics has been shown to result in fetal growth restriction in mice. In this study, we investigated the placental and fetal hemodynamic responses to plastics exposure in mice using high-frequency ultrasound. Healthy, pregnant CD-1 dams were given either 106 ng/L of 5 μm polystyrene microplastics or 106 ng/L of 50 nm polystyrene nanoplastics in drinking water throughout gestation and were compared with controls. Maternal exposure to both microplastics and nanoplastics resulted in evidence of placental dysfunction that was highly dependent on the part

HYPOTHESIS: Tissue-specific homing peptides have been shown to improve chemotherapeutic efficacy due to their trophism for tumor cells. Other sequences that selectively home to the placenta are providing new and safer therapeutics to treat complications in pregnancy. Our hypothesis is that the placental homing peptide RSGVAKS (RSG) may have binding affinity to cancer cells, and that insight can be gained into the binding mechanisms of RSG and the tumor homing peptide CGKRK to model membranes that mimic the primary lipid compositions of the respective cells.
EXPERIMENTS: Following cell culture

We present a 47-year-old male without a relevant history or past respiratory diseases. He debuted with an acute, non-complicated COVID-19 infection, and later he started with mMRC-2 dyspnea, accompanied by a non-expectorant cough of four months evolution. A CT thoracic scan showed a dilatation of the aerial homogenous space and a well-defined anterior left pericardiac level, and a pericardial left bulla was diagnosed. The patient was treated with surgical intervention by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery and had an adequate post-surgical evolution. The PPT must be managed by a multidiscipli

INTRODUCTION: Knowledge on prevalence and association of human papillomavirus (HPV) in third trimester placentae and adverse pregnancy outcomes is limited. We investigated the prevalence of placental HPV at delivery, explored urine HPV characteristics associated with placental HPV and whether placental HPV increased the risk adverse pregnancy outcomes.
METHODS: Pregnant women were enrolled in the Scandinavian PreventADALL mother-child cohort study at midgestation. Human papillomavirus genotyping was performed on placental biopsies collected at delivery (n = 587) and first-void urine at midges

OBJECTIVE: Adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preterm birth and preeclampsia, are associated with worse cardiovascular outcomes for offspring. Examination of the placenta is important for understanding how the prenatal period shapes long-term cardiovascular health. We sought to investigate the association between placental vascular malperfusion and fetal cardiac structure.
STUDY DESIGN: Data obtained from the Stillbirth Collaborative Research Network included stillbirths with placental pathology and autopsy. Stillbirths were classified in two ways: based on the severity of placental matern

Abnormal fetal growth, i.e., intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) or fetal growth restriction (FGR) and fetal overgrowth, is associated with increased perinatal morbidity and mortality and is strongly linked to the development of metabolic and cardiovascular disease in childhood and later in life. Emerging evidence suggests that changes in placental amino acid transport may contribute to abnormal fetal growth. This review is focused on amino acid transport in the human placenta, however, relevant animal models will be discussed to add mechanistic insights. At least 25 distinct amino acid tra
