Prevention of allergic conjunctivitis in mice by a rice-based edible vaccine containing modified Japanese cedar pollen allergens.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To determine whether oral immunotherapy with transgenic rice seeds expressing hypoallergenic modified antigens suppresses cedar pollen-induced allergic conjunctivitis by eliciting immune tolerance in mice. METHODS: BALB/c mice were fed once a day for 20 days with 220 mg of transgenic rice expressing modified Japanese cedar pollen allergens Cry j 1 and Cry j 2 or with non-transgenic rice seeds as a control. They were then sensitised with two intraperitoneal injections of Japanese cedar pollen in alum before challenge twice with pollen in eye drops. Twenty-four hours after the

Effects of jasmonic acid, ethylene, and salicylic acid signaling on the rhizosphere bacterial community of Arabidopsis thaliana.

Systemically induced resistance is a promising strategy to control plant diseases, as it affects numerous pathogens. However, since induced resistance reduces one or both growth and activity of plant pathogens, the indigenous microflora may also be affected by an enhanced defensive state of the plant. The aim of this study was to elucidate how much the bacterial rhizosphere microflora of Arabidopsis is affected by induced systemic resistance (ISR) or systemic acquired resistance (SAR). Therefore, the bacterial microflora of wild-type plants and plants affected in their defense signaling was co

Sulfated fucan oligosaccharides elicit defense responses in tobacco and local and systemic resistance against tobacco mosaic virus.

Sulfated fucans are common structural components of the cell walls of marine brown algae. Using a fucan-degrading hydrolase isolated from a marine bacterium, we prepared sulfated fucan oligosaccharides made of mono- and disulfated fucose units alternatively bound by alpha-1,4 and alpha-1,3 glycosidic linkages, respectively. Here, we report on the elicitor activity of such fucan oligosaccharide preparations in tobacco. In suspension cell cultures, oligofucans at the dose of 200 microg ml(-1) rapidly induced a marked alkalinization of the extracellular medium and the release of hydrogen peroxide

Elucidating the role of medicinal plants in melanoma treatment: a review on metastatic progression and phytochemical intervention.

Metastatic melanoma remains one of the most highly aggressive and treatment-resistant cancers, highlighting the need for enhanced understanding of its progression and novel therapeutic strategies. The metastatic cascade is an intricate, dynamic, and coordinated series of events which initiates with melanoma cell proliferation and the release of regulatory signalling molecules, followed by angiogenesis in response to hypoxia and nutrient deprivation, and extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation and invasion via matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity. Intravasation generates circulating tumour ce

Mechanistic insights into selenium nanoparticles: Comparative effects in plant and animal systems.

Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), characterized by high bioavailability and low toxicity, have emerged as a class of redox-active nanomaterials that can modulate cellular oxidative states. However, previous reviews have largely considered the agricultural and animal-health applications of SeNPs separately, whereas an integrated comparison of their uptake, biotransformation, and redox-regulatory mechanisms across plants and animals has remained lacking. SeNPs uptake and transformation are influenced by species characteristics, nanoparticle properties, and application strategies. In plants, SeNPs

Systemic acquired resistance in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.).

Systemic acquired resistance (SAR) to infection by Botrytis cinerea in the leaves of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) plants was induced following cotyledon inoculation with B. cinerea or treatment with abiotic inducers. Salicylic acid (SA), benzo-(1,2,3)-thiadiazole-7-carbothioic S-methyl ester (BTH), 2,6-dichloroisonicotinic acid (INA) or EDTA protected sunflower plants against Botrytis infection, that was revealed by a reduction in the number and area of the necrotic lesions in upper leaves after challenge inoculation with the pathogen. SA and BTH were more potent inducers than INA, EDTA or

Synergistic Effects of Herbal Bioactive Compounds and Growth Factors on Osteogenic Differentiation of Dental Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells.

Repairing large bone defects is still not an easy task and is considered an important challenge in regenerative medicine and maxillofacial surgery. The methods that currently exist each have their own limitations. Bone grafting from the patient's own body is known as the best method, but it is not always possible. This is because the donor site may get damaged, the amount of bone that can be taken is limited, and the surgery itself is complicated. In recent years, stem cells that are isolated from dental tissues have received a lot of attention. These cells proliferate quickly, have the abilit

Beyond R-Genes: Dissecting Metabolic and Nutrient-Driven Wheat Rust Resistance Through Induced Mutagenesis.

The increasing threat posed by wheat rust diseases caused by Puccinia spp. necessitates the development of resistance strategies that extend beyond conventional race-specific mechanisms. Although recent reviews (2023-2025) have emphasized gene discovery and genomic approaches, comparatively less attention has been given to the potential roles of metabolic regulation and micronutrient homeostasis in host-pathogen interactions. Here, we present a narrative synthesis of current evidence and propose a conceptual framework in which induced mutagenesis (ethyl methanesulfonate, EMS, and γ-irradiation

Immunomodulatory and anticancer effects of phytochemicals: A comprehensive analysis.

Natural compounds have been a part of traditional medicine for generations, and recent studies are now recognizing their potential to influence the immune system in cancer treatment. This review focuses on how specific plant-derived chemicals can modulate immune checkpoints such as PD-1, PD-L1, and CTLA-4, which play a central role in cancer immunotherapy, mainly in preclinical and early translational studies. Compounds including curcumin, isothiocyanates, apigenin, luteolin, and berberine demonstrate mechanisms that inhibit immune evasion, are associated with enhanced cytotoxic T-cell respons

Effects of radiation on the production of immunoglobulins in children subsequent to the Chernobyl disaster.

Studies on the immediate and long-term effects of radiation on the B-system immunity of children who were affected by radiation after the Chernobyl disaster (from 1986-1992) are summarized in this paper. Complete clinical and immunological examination of more than 6000 children have been carried out. The dynamics of the immune system, with ongoing reactions of cell proliferation and differentiation, gene amplification, transcription, translation, biosynthesis and switching production of isotypes and subclasses of immunoglobulins, as well as specific and nonspecific (natural) antibodies, make i

Natural compound phloretin restores periodontal immune homeostasis via HIF-1α-regulated PI3K/Akt and glycolysis in macrophages.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects about 45 %-50 % of adults worldwide, but the efficacy of current clinical therapies is unsatisfactory due to the complicated periodontal immune microenvironment. Thus, developing drugs that can regulate innate immune cells (e.g., macrophages) is a potent strategy to treat periodontitis. Here, we report that phloretin, a food plant-derived natural compound, is sufficient to alleviate periodontitis through immune regulation. In vivo, phloretin treatment could significantly reduce alveolar bone resorption and periodontal inflammation in

Soybean oil containing ginseng saponins as adjuvants promotes production of cytokines and enhances immune responses to foot-and-mouth disease vaccine.

In the present study, the adjuvant effect of soybean oil containing ginseng root saponins (SO-GS-R) on the immune response to foot-and-mouth disease vaccine (FMDV) in mice was investigated. When immunized with FMDV antigen emulsified in an SO-GS-R formulation, mice generated remarkably higher serum antibody and cytokine responses than mice immunized with FMDV antigen alone. To elucidate the mechanisms underlying the adjuvant effect of SO-GS-R, we measured cytokines in serum and muscle tissue after intramuscular injection of SO-GS-R. The results showed that injection of SO-GS-R significantly in

Association between Polygenetic Risk Scores of Low Immunity and Interactions between These Scores and Moderate Fat Intake in a Large Cohort.

White blood cell (WBC) counts represent overall immunity. However, a few studies have been conducted to explore the genetic impacts of immunity and their interaction with lifestyles. We aimed to identify genetic variants associated with a low-WBC risk and document interactions between polygenetic risk scores (PRS), lifestyle factors, and nutrient intakes that influence low-WBC risk in a large hospital-based cohort. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were selected by genome-wide association study of participants with a low-WBC count (<4 × 109/L, n = 4176; low-WBC group) or with a normal WBC

Comparisons of Allergenic and Metazoan Parasite Proteins: Allergy the Price of Immunity.

Allergic reactions can be considered as maladaptive IgE immune responses towards environmental antigens. Intriguingly, these mechanisms are observed to be very similar to those implicated in the acquisition of an important degree of immunity against metazoan parasites (helminths and arthropods) in mammalian hosts. Based on the hypothesis that IgE-mediated immune responses evolved in mammals to provide extra protection against metazoan parasites rather than to cause allergy, we predict that the environmental allergens will share key properties with the metazoan parasite antigens that are specif

Integrating transcriptome and microRNA analysis identifies genes and microRNAs for AHO-induced systemic acquired resistance in N. tabacum.

3-Acetonyl-3-hydroxyoxindole (AHO) induces systemic acquired resistance (SAR) in Nicotiana. However, the underlying molecular mechanism is not well understood. To understand the molecular regulation during SAR induction, we examined mRNA levels, microRNA (miRNA) expression, and their regulatory mechanisms in control and AHO-treated tobacco leaves. Using RNA-seq analysis, we identified 1,445 significantly differentially expressed genes (DEGs) at least 2 folds with AHO treatment. The DEGs significantly enriched in six metabolism pathways including phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, sesquiterpenoid an

Plant-based prebiotics to modulate skin microbiota: a novel approach for next-generation cosmeceuticals.

The skin microbiome maintains cutaneous homeostasis through colonization resistance and immune modulation, targeted prebiotic interventions however remain largely unexplored. The present study addresses this lacuna effectively demonstrating the ability of plant-derived prebiotics to selectively modulate key skin commensals and pathogenic bacteria thereby unraveling a new dimension to use of prebiotics in skin care. Linum usitatissimum (flaxseed) and Allium sativum (garlic) extracts used herein exhibited complete growth inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus within 6 h, while Curcuma amada (mango

Ferritin as a Nanoparticle Scaffold for Plant-Produced Next-Generation Subunit Vaccines.

Protein nanoparticles offer an innovative approach to next-generation subunit vaccine development by displaying antigenic sequences on the nanoparticle surface. Compared to traditional subunit vaccines, protein nanoparticle vaccines often show improved interaction with the immune system due to their particulate size and repetitive epitope display. Ferritin from Helicobacter pylori assembles into a spherical shape composed of 24 subunits that can display foreign peptides on its surface for use in vaccine development. Surface display can be achieved via genetic fusion of sequences encoding antig

Exploring the Therapeutic Potential of Ocimum sanctum and Phanera variegata in Breast Cancer Treatment: A Promising Natural Approach.

Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies affecting women worldwide. It is a complex, heterogeneous disease, classified into several subtypes, including hormone receptor-positive and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), each with distinct therapeutic challenges. TNBC, in particular, is characterized by its aggressive nature and lack of targeted therapies due to the absence of estrogen, progesterone, and HER2 receptors. This review explores the potential of natural plant-based compounds, especially focusing on Clove Basil (Ocimum sanctum) and Phanera variegata, in combating breast c
